An off-road builder in Ankeny brought us a project last fall that made the ALI Gold certification conversation real — a shop that builds custom Broncos and Jeep JLs for national customers needed an autolift garage upgrade that could handle both the constant oil-pan gasket work of a fresh engine build and the insurance-and-liability paperwork that comes with running a professional operation. He was also blunt about it: his previous lift had been a used unit off a marketplace listing, uncertified and unregistered, and his general liability insurance carrier had made it clear that had to change. Here is the case study of how we rebuilt his autolift garage from the floor up.
Rotary and Challenger ALI Gold two-posts, insurance-ready and warranty-registered by our team — the equipment your commercial carrier actually wants to see.
What ALI Gold Actually Certifies
ALI is the Automotive Lift Institute, and Gold certification is the industry-standard mark that a lift has been independently tested against ANSI/ALI ALCTV — the American National Standard for automotive lifts. Gold-certified means the lift has been evaluated for structural integrity, safety systems, hydraulic performance, and electrical safety by a third-party lab. It is not a marketing badge that manufacturers self-award; it is a certification that gets audited, and it can be revoked. When our Ankeny customer’s insurance carrier said he needed certified equipment, ALI Gold was the specific thing they wanted to see on the invoice.
The practical reality is that ALI Gold matters most in three situations — insurance underwriting, OSHA inspections at commercial shops, and any liability event where a lift is even peripherally involved in an injury. Uncertified lifts get shops sued out of business. Gold-certified lifts from major manufacturers like Rotary and Challenger cost 20-30 percent more up-front than the uncertified imports on marketplace sites, but they eliminate the entire class of liability exposure that keeps insurance premiums manageable across the life of the business.
Building an Autolift Garage for Oil-Pan Work
Oil-pan gasket work is where lift geometry becomes obvious. On a modern truck, the oil pan bolts are recessed against the crossmember, and the pan itself often sits within 3 inches of the frame. To pull the pan cleanly, you need vertical access for a drift pin and pry bar with a technician standing on a wheeled stool. That means the lift arms cannot be blocking the space directly under the front of the engine. Symmetric two-post geometry works — asymmetric can also work if the vehicle is rotated 30 degrees, but symmetric gives predictable access every time.
Our Ankeny customer’s autolift garage got two Rotary SPO10 two-posts with symmetric arms, each with ALI Gold on the plate. Column height is 12 feet, which gives him 76 inches of pad height at full lift — enough for any Jeep or Bronco he builds. The second key spec was the low-profile arm option, which drops arm-drop-height by 1.5 inches so the pads can slide under the pinch weld of a lifted Wrangler without needing a rolling jack to raise the frame first every session.
Site Prep and Slab Verification
Before we ordered his lifts, we cored his slab. It came in at 4.5 inches with rebar on 18-inch centers — better than the average residential pour, but we still cut a 5-foot by 5-foot pad around each planned column location and poured to 6 inches thick with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers, tied into the existing slab with dowel drilled epoxy anchors. That upgrade cost $1,400 total and gave the lifts a lifetime foundation that will outlast the building. For an autolift garage this owner planned to run 60 hours per week, spending $1,400 on concrete was rounding error against the equipment cost.
The other prep item was drainage. Every commercial autolift garage in Iowa needs a trench drain or a slight pitch to a floor drain, because oil-pan gasket work leaks oil until the new gasket seats. Our Ankeny build got a 1-percent pitch to a center trench drain that runs the length of both bays, connected to an oil interceptor. That is required by local building code for commercial auto service, and it is the right thing to do regardless of code enforcement.
Electrical, Air, and Utility Roughs
His shop had 400-amp three-phase service already run for his welding equipment and paint booth, which meant we had headroom to spare on the two-post installs. Each SPO10 pulls 20 amps continuous under load on 208V three-phase, so a 30-amp three-phase breaker per lift with individual disconnects gave him code-compliant electrical. If your Ankeny build is starting from residential single-phase, do not panic — SPO10 two-posts run fine on single-phase, and we can spec that at ordering time. It is just a different motor and control-panel configuration.
Compressed air for a professional autolift garage is the utility that gets under-specified more than any other. A shop running two lifts, a tire machine, an impact station, and an air-operated grease reel needs 60-80 CFM at 100 PSI continuous. That is a 10-HP two-stage compressor at minimum, and 15 HP if the tire work is heavy. The Ankeny build got a 15-HP two-stage with a 120-gallon tank and 1-inch copper distribution, which sized correctly for the six air drops we ran to each lift bay without pressure loss.
Registration, Warranty, and Insurance Documentation
Every ALI Gold lift we install gets registered with the manufacturer within seven days of commissioning. Registration is what activates the warranty and what generates the paper trail your insurance carrier wants. Rotary and Challenger both issue certificates of compliance in the owner’s name, listing the serial numbers, install date, and installer credentials. Our Ankeny customer put those certificates in his shop insurance file, and his general liability premium dropped by 8 percent the following renewal cycle without any additional risk-management steps.
Warranty support on ALI Gold equipment is a real advantage. Rotary’s five-year structural warranty is honored nationwide, and we handle any warranty claims for autolift garage installs we have done, including diagnostic labor if a component fails within the covered period. We stock the entire wear-part catalog in Ames, so cable-and-cylinder failures never require an out-of-state shipment. That matters when a production shop cannot afford three days of downtime waiting on parts from another region.
Ongoing Service and Annual Inspection
ALI Gold certification also comes with an ongoing responsibility — annual inspection. ANSI/ALI ALOIM is the standard for lift inspection and maintenance, and it requires a certified inspector to walk the lift once per year. We are ALI-certified inspectors, and we roll the annual inspection into our service visits at a set fee per lift for autolift garage sites within an hour of Ames. That covers cable tension, cylinder seal condition, safety pawl function, hydraulic fluid, and structural weld inspection.
Between annual inspections, the owner is responsible for daily and weekly checks — cable slack, oil-level in the hydraulic tank, unusual noises during operation. We provide a laminated checklist that lives on the wall of each install, and we walk owners through the routine on commissioning day. It takes about 90 seconds per lift per day, and it prevents 95 percent of the failures that put lifts out of service unexpectedly during a production week.
Twelve Months In — The Results
A year after the Ankeny install, our customer runs both lifts an average of 45 hours per week between his three techs. Zero warranty claims. Zero unplanned downtime. His insurance carrier reissued his general liability at the lower rate, and he has since referred four other Iowa off-road builders our way for their own autolift garage upgrades. That is what ALI Gold plus proper installation plus real Iowa-based support looks like in production, not just on the sales page.
The lesson from this build is that certification is not a checkbox — it is the foundation that lets everything else in a professional autolift garage work correctly. If you are building an off-road shop or any commercial auto operation in Ankeny or anywhere in central Iowa, start with ALI Gold equipment and a real installer.
