Heavy-duty truck shops in northwest Iowa spend real money on an autolift garage, and the cost line has more parts than most first-time buyers expect. The lift itself is only about 60% of the total. The rest is install labor, freight, concrete prep, electrical, and accessories — all of which vary based on your building and your vehicle mix. This article breaks down the honest costs for a heavy-duty shop doing wheel-bearing service, brake work, and driveline repair on Class 5 through Class 7 trucks. What Class of Truck Are You Really Lifting

Before quoting an autolift garage, we ask northwest Iowa truck shops what they actually roll into the bay. Class 5 trucks (16,001-19,500 GVWR) include most F-550s and 5500-series work trucks. Class 6 (19,501-26,000 GVWR) covers medium-duty box trucks and heavier service trucks. Class 7 (26,001-33,000 GVWR) is where straight box trucks and smaller commercial rigs live. Above Class 7 you’re into semi tractor and bus territory, which needs different lift equipment — a mobile column set or an inground.

For a two-post autolift garage handling Class 5 through 7, capacity ratings range from 15,000 lb on the light end (Rotary SPO16, Challenger CL16) to 25,000 lb on the heavy end (Rotary SPO25, various forklifts). Which one you buy depends on your heaviest realistic truck weight loaded, plus a margin. We recommend at least 20% margin over the heaviest vehicle. A 20,000 lb loaded box truck goes on a 25,000 lb lift, not a 20,000. That margin buys you future flexibility and protects the warranty on overload events.

The Lift Itself — 15,000 to 25,000 lb Two-Post Range

A 15,000 lb two-post autolift garage from Rotary or Challenger runs in the ten to fourteen thousand range depending on symmetric versus asymmetric and specific model. The 20,000 lb tier steps up to about fifteen to eighteen thousand. The 25,000 lb tier lands in the twenty to twenty-five range, and the heaviest commercial two-posts push past thirty when you spec taller columns for headroom on medium-duty box trucks.

Those numbers include the lift, arms, hydraulic powerpack, safety-cam system, and standard pads. They don’t include freight, install, concrete, or accessories. What separates the price tiers on the lift itself is capacity, column height, arm length, and country of manufacture. Rotary manufactures the SPO series in Madison, Indiana. Challenger heavy-duty two-posts are U.S. or Canadian sourced through VSG. Import lifts undercut those numbers by 20-30% but usually don’t survive a decade of hard commercial use — the seals, the cam-lock precision, and the hydraulic components are downgrades that show up under load cycles within a few years.

Freight and Install Labor Costs

Heavy-duty autolift garage lifts ship on freight pallets, and the freight bill for northwest Iowa runs six hundred to twelve hundred depending on the origin warehouse. Rotary ships from Indiana; Challenger from Michigan. Freight to Sioux Center, Sheldon, or Spencer is a full commercial delivery — LTL trucking with liftgate service if your shop doesn’t have a dock. Some shops have a dock; most don’t. Include the liftgate line item in the freight quote.

Install labor for a heavy-duty two-post is longer than a passenger-lift install because the components are heavier and the anchor pattern is larger. Expect one to two days of on-site work for a two-tech crew. Every heavy-duty shop is slightly different in bay geometry, existing utilities, and vehicle access.

Concrete and Electrical Prep Line Items

Concrete for a heavy-duty autolift garage is not the same as a passenger-lift install. A 25,000 lb two-post can require six to eight inches of 4,000 PSI concrete at the anchor zones, per the manufacturer’s install manual. If your existing slab is four inches at 3,000 PSI, you have two options: pour thicker anchor pads at the post locations, or downgrade to a lighter-capacity lift. Neither is cheap, but the anchor-pad pour is usually the correct answer if you’re serious about heavy-duty work. Budget two to four thousand for a proper anchor-pad pour by a local concrete contractor.

Electrical is the smaller line item but still real. Most commercial two-posts require 220V single-phase or three-phase 208-230V, wired to a dedicated 30-amp circuit. If your bay has 220V ready, the electrician’s cost is a few hundred to run a whip. If your bay only has 110V, you’re adding a service upgrade or a subpanel, which can push electrical to fifteen hundred or more. Verify the panel before you buy the lift, not after the delivery truck backs up to your shop door.

Accessories That Actually Get Used on Heavy-Duty Autolift Garage Bays

Heavy-duty bays use different accessories than passenger service. Pad extensions in six-inch and eight-inch heights are almost mandatory for lifting under a truck frame — the factory pads are too short. Frame adapters (also called truck-frame cradles) let you lift under a rectangular frame rail instead of a pinch weld. Both accessories are stocked and generally add three to six hundred to the lift purchase, and both are legitimate line items that pay back in tech-time savings.

Rolling jacks are optional on two-posts and standard on four-posts. On a heavy-duty two-post autolift garage doing wheel-bearing work, you don’t need rolling jacks because the wheels come off during service, not during lift. Skip that line item. Air-line pre-plumbing at the columns runs a few hundred and is worth it if your shop uses pneumatic tools daily — it keeps hoses off the floor. Drip trays under the powerpack are cheap and useful. Alignment turnplates are useful only if you’re running alignment, which most heavy-duty shops don’t do on the same lift as service work.

Wheel-Bearing Service Access and Column Height

Wheel-bearing service on a Class 6 or 7 truck requires enough vertical clearance to pull the drum, remove the hub-bearing assembly, and swap the bearings on a workbench. Full lift height on a 20,000 lb two-post reaches about 76 to 82 inches at the pad, depending on column spec. That gives a standing tech about 60 inches to work under the truck frame. Adequate but not luxurious.

If your shop is a dedicated wheel-bearing operation, spec the tallest columns your ceiling allows. A 12-foot clear ceiling in a northwest Iowa shop supports the taller-column variants comfortably. A 14-foot ceiling — which we see in newer pole buildings — supports full-extension columns and buys you real headroom for standing work. Every extra inch of pad height is an inch of tech comfort over an eight-hour shift, and comfort translates to fewer mistakes on bearing torque. That’s a real safety consideration on a heavy-duty autolift garage.

Financing Terms and the 12-Month Payment Schedule

Total cost for a full heavy-duty autolift garage install in northwest Iowa lands in the sixteen to thirty thousand range once you add lift, freight, install, concrete pad pour, and electrical. That’s a real capital expense for an independent shop, and paying it out of operating cash flow is possible but not always advisable.
