That is not the workload a two-post lift was engineered for, and it eats hydraulic cylinder seals in a way you do not see in a normal service shop. Why Seasonal Storage Kills Cylinder Seals Faster

A hydraulic cylinder in a two-post autolift garage lift is designed for cyclic loading: raise, hold for a few hours of work, lower, repeat. The piston seal sees fluid pressure on one face and atmospheric pressure on the other, and the seal material relaxes into position under each cycle. When you park a vehicle in the air for nine months straight, the seal is under continuous static load, the fluid slowly migrates around the seal lip, and the seal itself takes a compression set. When you finally cycle the lift after storage, the seal no longer springs back to full contact and the leak-by starts.

This is not a defect. It is a use-case mismatch. Storage lifts (four-post drive-on style) use a cable-and-latch load hold that takes the fluid out of the equation entirely once the latch drops into a notch. If you are using a two-post autolift garage for genuine long-term storage, you are asking hydraulic seals to do something they were not spec’d for. Rebuild is a routine every three to five years under this duty cycle rather than the fifteen-plus you would expect in normal shop use.

Cylinder Bore And Rod Dimensions: What To Measure

Two-post autolift garage cylinders in the 9,000 to 12,000 pound capacity range typically run a 2.5-inch to 3-inch bore and a 1.5-inch to 1.75-inch chrome rod. Rotary SPO and SPOA machines through the 2000s use a 2.75-inch bore and a 1.5-inch rod. Challenger CL10 and predecessors use a 3.0-inch bore and a 1.75-inch rod. Bendpak XPR-10 series is a 2.5-inch bore and a 1.5-inch rod. Measure both dimensions before ordering. A 1.5-inch rod seal in a 1.75-inch cylinder will leak from day one.

To measure without full disassembly, remove the cylinder-cap gland nut and pull the rod partially out. Rod diameter measures at the smooth chrome section, not the threaded end. Bore diameter you can capture with an inside-mic through the gland opening. Cylinder stroke length is the third number: 60 inches for standard-height two-post lifts, 74 inches for tall configurations. Stroke does not affect seal-kit selection but does affect the cylinder-body length if you are replacing the whole cylinder rather than just the seals.

Seal-Kit Contents: What Actually Comes In The Box

A proper hydraulic cylinder rebuild kit for an autolift garage two-post lift contains five items: a piston seal (the primary pressure-holding seal on the piston face), a rod seal (the fluid-side seal on the gland), a rod wiper (the outboard scraper that keeps dust out), a static o-ring for the gland body, and a backup ring for the piston seal. Some kits also include a rod-bearing bushing if it commonly wears. Do not order individual seals unless you know exactly what you are doing; the geometry of piston seal and backup ring is matched and you cannot mix generic parts.

We do not recommend the imported no-name kits that show up on marketplace sites for under fifty dollars; the seal material is nitrile-only rather than polyurethane, and it takes compression set even faster than the seals you are replacing.

The Rebuild Procedure: Six Steps From Drain To Test

To rebuild an autolift garage cylinder without pulling the whole lift, first lower the arms fully and drop the safety catch into the lowest position. Second, disconnect the hydraulic supply and return hoses at the cylinder and let them drain into a pan. Third, remove the gland nut from the top of the cylinder, which requires either a large adjustable wrench or a spanner sized to the flat cuts on the gland. Fourth, pull the rod and piston assembly straight up out of the cylinder body, keeping it aligned to avoid scoring the bore.

Fifth, cut off the old piston seal and rod seal, clean the piston groove and gland groove thoroughly, and install the new seals with a smear of clean hydraulic fluid. Sixth, reinsert the rod and piston, thread the gland nut back down, reconnect hoses, refill the reservoir, and bleed. First cycle the lift empty five to ten times to work air out of the system. Then load-test with a known-weight vehicle. Leak-down should be under a quarter inch per hour under full load. Anything more, and you have a seal that seated incorrectly.

Reservoir Fluid And The Contamination Problem

Every rebuild we do on an autolift garage two-post also flushes the hydraulic reservoir. Storage-duty seals fail in part because contaminants circulate through the same fluid for years without turnover. When you pull the old seals you often find them coated with a black tar-like residue that is oxidized hydraulic fluid and rubber debris. Reinstalling new seals into that fluid gets you six months, not five years.

Drain the reservoir completely, wipe the interior with a lint-free rag, and refill with the manufacturer-specified fluid grade. Rotary and Challenger both spec AW-32 or AW-46 anti-wear hydraulic fluid depending on ambient temperature. In an unheated Iowa Great Lakes storage barn that swings from minus twenty in January to plus ninety in July, AW-32 gives you better cold-start viscosity. Do not use ATF, do not use motor oil, and do not top off with whatever is in the drum. Fluid contamination is the number-one cause of premature seal failure on rebuilt cylinders.

Preventing The Next Failure: Store The Car On Jack Stands

The honest answer for the Iowa Great Lakes family shop is that a two-post autolift garage is the wrong tool for nine-month vehicle storage. We rebuilt their cylinders and gave them the same advice: for the customer cars that will sit for the whole winter, lower the vehicle onto tall jack stands under the frame rails and drop the lift entirely. The seals are then under zero load for the storage period and last their full design life. Cycle the lift monthly to keep the fluid circulating.

If your autolift garage cylinder shows visible scoring on the chrome rod, replace the rod rather than reseal. A scored rod will chew the new rod seal within weeks. If the cylinder bore itself is pitted (rust from moisture in the reservoir), the whole cylinder needs replacement, not a rebuild.
