The Locking System: Where Safety Actually Lives

Your autolift garage has mechanical locks that engage at set heights independent of the hydraulic system. This is the primary safety redundancy — if hydraulics ever fail, the locks hold the vehicle. But locks only work if they engage cleanly on every cycle. In a suspension shop where the lift comes up and down forty times a day, we see locks that stopped engaging fully but nobody noticed because hydraulics held the load. That is a latent safety failure and a warranty violation waiting to happen.

The monthly check is simple. Cycle the lift up empty and listen for the four locks to click evenly as the columns rise. Cycle back down and repeat with a vehicle on it. If any lock sounds delayed, if you hear one click and not the other, if the arm is not sitting on the mechanical stop when parked at a set height, stop using the lift and call us. This is not a defer-until-next-quarter issue. In a Davenport tire shop with high daily cycle counts, lock failures develop quickly and they are the mechanism that keeps someone from getting hurt.

Cables: The Wear Part That Never Rests

Equalizer cables are the component that keeps both columns rising at the same rate on a two-post. If cables stretch unevenly, one column leads and the lift tips slightly, transferring load into the anchors and stressing the arms. Cables have a defined service life in cycles, and a busy suspension shop hits that cycle count faster than most owners realize. We generally recommend cable inspection quarterly for a tire shop and full cable replacement between year six and year ten depending on cycle volume.

What to look for: broken individual strands, kinks, corrosion, and daylight between strands where the cable was compressed or bent. Any one of those means it is time to replace the set, not just one cable — always replace as a pair or full set so the tension is balanced. A cable failure on a loaded lift is one of the most dangerous things that can happen in a shop, and it is entirely preventable with quarterly inspection. On any autolift garage we install, we schedule the first cable inspection at six months and then annually thereafter as part of our maintenance program.

Arm Restraint Gears: The Silent Failure Point

Arm restraints are the spring-loaded gears at the base of each arm that keep the arms from swinging out when the vehicle is on the pads. On a suspension job, when you unload the strut and the vehicle briefly wants to shift its weight distribution, arm restraints keep everything locked in place. When arm restraint gears wear, the teeth round off and the pin no longer holds under load. The arm can then swing free with the vehicle in the air, and that is exactly as bad as it sounds.

Inspection is monthly. Pull the plastic cover off each arm, look at the gear teeth, and check for chipping or rounding. A new gear has sharp tooth profiles; a worn gear looks smoothed over. Replacement is a couple of hours of labor with new gear stocks. Almost every warranty denial we see for arm-related issues traces back to gear wear that was not caught in time. If we see rounded teeth on a warranty claim, the manufacturer sees an operator maintenance issue and the claim gets denied. Catching wear early keeps both the shop safe and the warranty valid.

Hydraulic System: What The Fluid Tells You

Pull the pump reservoir cap monthly and look at the fluid. Clean AW-32 hydraulic fluid is amber and translucent. Contaminated fluid turns milky (water intrusion), dark (thermal breakdown), or cloudy (particulate wear). Water intrusion is the most common issue in Iowa shops because of humidity swings, and it rusts pump internals from the inside out. If you see milkiness, drain and refill with fresh fluid immediately and inspect for the water source.

The other hydraulic check is the seals on the cylinders. A slow weep is not a crisis, but a steady drip means the seal is on its way out. Cylinder reseal is straightforward warranty work in the first two years and moderately priced afterward. What is not okay is running the lift with a leaking cylinder for months, because the load calculations assume both cylinders are holding pressure equally. An imbalanced hydraulic system stresses the equalizer cables and eventually shows up as uneven column travel. On any autolift garage that comes into our shop for service, we start with the fluid check because it tells us the most in the shortest time.

Anchor Bolts: The One Check Owners Forget

Anchor bolts hold the columns to the concrete under significant tensile load. In a suspension shop where lifts cycle many times per day, anchors gradually loosen over years. The check is quick: take a torque wrench to each anchor nut and verify it holds the manufacturer-specified torque. If any anchor turns further than half a turn to reach spec, the concrete around that anchor may be crumbling and you have a bigger problem.

Loose anchors are a warranty voider if a failure occurs and the anchors are not at spec torque. It is one of the fastest denials we see, and it is one of the easiest to prevent. Annual anchor torque check takes fifteen minutes on a two-post lift. In a Davenport tire shop cycling forty times a day, we would do it every six months. The other check that goes with anchors is column plumb — put a level on each column semi-annually and verify it has not started leaning. A leaning column tells you the anchors are working loose before the torque check catches it. Together these are your foundation safety layer for the whole autolift garage installation.

Suspension Work Specifics: Load Path And Timing

Suspension jobs load and unload arm pads repeatedly as struts come off and go back on. The right technique is to raise the lift to full height, engage locks, then work with the vehicle at rest on the mechanical locks — not the hydraulics. When you press a spring compressor or torque a control arm bolt, the reaction force travels through the pad into the arm and eventually into the column. If that load is on hydraulics alone rather than locks, you are stressing the entire system unnecessarily.

Techs in a busy shop sometimes skip the lock engagement because it takes an extra ten seconds. That habit adds up over thousands of cycles and it is the single most common cause of premature cable stretch and arm gear wear that we see in warranty inspections. Training your crew to always park on the locks is the cheapest safety and warranty-preservation investment you can make. It is also one of the things the manufacturer’s rep will check first if you ever have a serious claim.

Bringing It All Together For Your Davenport Shop

None of these checks is complicated. Locks monthly, cables quarterly, arm gears monthly, fluid monthly, anchors semi-annually, plumb semi-annually. Write them on a laminated card and put it on the pump. Assign them to a specific tech and hold that tech accountable. The whole regime takes maybe twenty minutes a month for a single lift and it will extend your service life by years while preserving every warranty claim you might ever need to file.
