The dedicated truck was worth the upcharge on this delivery given the customer’s location and the fact that no forklift would be waiting at the shop.
We also had the option of loading the crate onto one of our own trucks and delivering it as part of the install trip. Which is what we ultimately did. Rolling one crate 4 hours west of Ames on our own dime is only economical when the install cost supports it, but for this customer we packaged freight into the install day. Total freight cost was folded into the overall install quote rather than broken out separately, and he saved probably $400 versus a common-carrier route with residential delivery accessorials on top.

Along the Iowa-Nebraska border, forklift availability is genuinely thin outside of grain elevators and larger farm operations. Delivery Day: What Actually Happened
Delivery day started at 5 AM in Ames. Install crew of two, plus one driver, plus the crated lift, gantry, and toolboxes loaded onto our truck. Four-hour drive out. Arrived on-site at 9:30. Backed the truck up to the shop overhead door. Set the gantry, lowered the crate to the floor, broke the crate down, and had the columns positioned by 11:15. The customer was there the whole time, learning the choreography for his own future service visits and asking good questions about what he could DIY later.
Anchor drilling into his 5-inch slab was straightforward. No rebar hits, no rebounds. Both columns were plumb by noon. Lunch break, then cables strung, hydraulic fluid filled, and the system bled by 3 PM. First empty cycle at 3:15. First cycle with the customer’s own pickup as a test load at 3:45. Crew back on the road home by 4:30. Long day, but cleaner than we’d planned for.
