They are not the primary lifting force — that is hydraulic — but if the cables stretch or one goes slack, one column rises faster than the other and the vehicle rocks. Under transmission service, where a technician is pushing a heavy transmission upward with a jack, an out-of-sync lift can shift the load center off the pad. That is when bad things happen.

Body shops running transmission and heavy driveline work push cables harder because loads shift in and out of pad-center more often — plan for the shorter end of the range.
Replacement is not a job to defer. Off-brand imports sometimes advertise similar-sounding specs but have plastic-detent lock actuators that wear out inside three years. The safety-lock system is the single biggest quality differentiator between name-brand and off-brand automotive two post lifts, and it is a difference you feel every time you lift a vehicle. Test the locks aggressively before you sign the purchase paperwork.
Capacity and arm reach for transmission work
Transmission service is heaviest at the vehicle’s center — the transmission itself hangs from the middle of the driveline. A two-post lifting from the four corner pinch welds bears that load through the arms. For a body shop foreman working on full-size trucks, vans, and Class 3 pickups, we recommend at least a 12,000 lb unit with three-stage swing arms. Transmission removal shifts load center forward or rearward depending on the vehicle, and if your pad is even six inches off spec, the load can tip.
