Cables on a two-post lift are the primary safety and lifting mechanism after the hydraulics. Both columns share a pair of equalizer cables that keep the carriages moving up and down together. Those cables need inspection at regular intervals or they can fail catastrophically. Every one of our automotive two post lifts ships with a manufacturer-recommended cable inspection schedule. For hobbyist duty cycles — say, 100 cycles per month — cables typically need a visual inspection every 6 months and a full inspection with a tension check annually.

What you look for is broken wire strands, kinks, corrosion, and any change in tension. A cable that has lost a strand or two is still usable but should be replaced at the next opportunity. A cable with three or more broken strands, or visible corrosion, or a kink from an install error must be replaced immediately. Sioux City winter humidity can accelerate cable corrosion in unheated garages, so heated storage is worth considering if your garage runs cold. Replacement cables for major brands are inexpensive and easy to install with basic tools. The key is inspecting on schedule rather than waiting for a failure. Commercial shops on daily duty cycles replace every 3 to 5 years. Hobbyists at 100 cycles a month can stretch to 7 years safely if they inspect regularly and store the lift in a dry environment.

Replacement is a straightforward job. Loosen the equalizer tension, disconnect the cable ends, thread new cables through the columns and pulleys, and retension. What does not work is skipping the replacement and hoping the cables last forever. They will not. Concrete, Anchors, and Sioux City Slab Reality
