The base lift cost — what the sticker actually reflects
A twelve-thousand-pound Rotary SPO12 or a Challenger CL12 lands in the seven-to-nine-thousand-dollar range at installer-tier pricing. A fifteen-thousand-pound unit like the Rotary SPO16-AV or the Challenger CL15 runs nine-to-eleven-thousand. Those numbers are the naked lift — columns, carriage, arms, hydraulic power unit, and the standard cable-and-hose kit. What they do not include is the shipping, the anchors, the concrete evaluation, or the professional install. A shop owner who thinks the seven-thousand-dollar sticker is the whole story usually finds himself at eleven or twelve thousand by the time the lift is bolted down and inspected.
The sticker also does not include options that heavy-duty shops almost always need: extended-height column packages, wider drive-through carriages for tandem-axle trucks, and heavy-duty arm sets with adapter kits for oddball frame geometries. Every one of those options adds three hundred to fifteen hundred dollars. Freight and delivery — the underquoted line item
A heavy-duty two-post crate weighs 2,000 to 2,800 pounds and ships class-85 freight. From the manufacturer’s dock to a central Iowa address, expect freight of $350 to $700 depending on the route, the season, and whether you spec appointment delivery. The naked-quote installers show a $150 freight line to win the bid. That number is fantasy on heavy lifts. Real freight into Ames, Marshalltown, or Newton runs closer to $500 nine times out of ten, and in winter it can climb higher if the carrier has to reroute around weather.
The other freight line item is inside delivery or liftgate service. Neither is available on lifts this heavy — the crate exceeds most liftgate ratings. Professional installation labor
A certified installer running a factory-approved install on a heavy-duty two-post charges $1,200 to $1,800 for a standard bay with adequate concrete and utility drops. That includes column plumb, anchor drill and set, carriage assembly, hydraulic hookup, electrical, initial safety inspection, and operator training. It does not include ceiling modifications, floor repair, or utility relocation. If the shop’s electrical drop is on the wrong wall and needs to be re-run, the electrician’s bill is separate — typically $400 to $900 for a straightforward relocation. If the concrete is thin or cracked and needs core-drill anchors instead of standard wedges, add another $300 to $500.

Arm restraints and safety-cam engagement
Heavy-duty automotive two post lifts have safety cams and arm-restraint systems that engage automatically when the arms are positioned under the vehicle. These systems are the difference between a lift that holds a truck safely and one that lets the arm creep out of position under load. Every manufacturer designs their own restraint mechanism — Rotary uses a spring-loaded pawl, Challenger uses a gear-and-cam, others use ratcheting collars — and every one of them requires annual inspection and periodic replacement of wear components. Budget for arm restraint service on every heavy-duty install.
The initial cost of the arm restraint hardware is built into the lift price on a properly-configured unit. Where costs enter is on the annual maintenance side. An ALI-certified inspection of a heavy-duty two-post runs $200 to $350 including the arm-restraint check. If a restraint component fails or wears past spec, replacement parts run $150 to $400 per arm depending on the mechanism and the lift model. On a well-maintained lift, arm restraint components will run six to ten years before requiring replacement, which works out to roughly $75 to $150 per year averaged over the service life. That is the operating cost of running a heavy-duty two-post correctly. Skip it and the insurance claim will cost fifty times that number.
The transmission-service option package
Central Iowa heavy-duty shops that run transmission service on automotive two post lifts almost always add a purpose-built transmission jack and a set of pit-style adapter cups that fit the raised carriage. The transmission jack itself is a separate purchase — a good pneumatic-hydraulic unit rated for 1,000 pounds runs $1,200 to $2,000. The lift-mounted cups or cradles that let the jack index against the lift arms add another $200 to $400. Neither is strictly required to work under a raised truck, but both dramatically reduce the time and back strain of pulling a heavy transmission.
The other option we often spec for transmission-focused truck shops is a tall-column upgrade. Standard automotive two post lifts raise the vehicle to about 74 inches of pad height. A tall-column upgrade raises that to 78 or 80 inches, which is meaningful when a technician is working on a driveline component overhead. The upgrade adds roughly $800 to $1,400 to the lift cost depending on the brand, and for a shop that runs transmission work daily it pays back in reduced tech fatigue within the first year. We recommend it on every heavy-duty install where transmission work is the primary use case.
Concrete evaluation and site prep
Before we drill the first anchor hole, we evaluate the concrete. Heavy-duty two-post lifts require a minimum four-inch pad at 3,000 psi, and most manufacturers specify six inches at 4,000 psi for anything in the fifteen-thousand-pound-plus class. If the existing concrete is thinner, cracked, or of unknown compressive strength, the choice is either to core-out and re-pour the anchor zones or to install higher-grade anchors with a wider spread pattern. Both add cost. Core-and-pour on a single-bay retrofit runs $1,500 to $3,000. Upgraded anchor packages add $200 to $500.
The site prep line item that surprises most heavy-duty shop owners is floor leveling. Older shop floors in central Iowa are frequently pitched toward drains or have settled unevenly over decades. A two-post installed on an out-of-level floor will show up as arms that do not equalize properly or as safety locks that engage on one side before the other. Shimming the columns during install can correct up to a quarter-inch of slope. Anything worse than that requires floor grinding or a full re-pour of the column footprint. Neither is cheap.
