Item one: verify the intended vehicle mix honestly
Farm-shop owners tend to buy too little lift or way too much. Too little happens when someone spec’s a ten-thousand-pound lift for a mixed farm fleet that includes a one-ton dually and a heavy grain trailer. Too much happens when a farmer buys an eighteen-thousand-pound heavy-duty lift for what is actually a mostly half-ton pickup fleet. Neither is a disaster, but both waste money. For the northwest Iowa farmer, the honest mix was two half-ton pickups, one three-quarter-ton, and rare heavier trailer axle work. That points at twelve thousand pounds, symmetric, standard height on his ceiling.

Item three: check the concrete honestly, not optimistically

We drilled a small core in the anchor location just to verify. Came back at six-and-a-quarter inches. That is more than sufficient for a twelve-thousand-pound lift with standard wedge anchors. Older farm-shop slabs (pre-1980) sometimes come in at four inches or less, and you cannot install commercial-grade automotive two post lifts on that without either patching or accepting a lower-capacity lift.
If your slab is thin, do not fake it. We have seen farmers set anchors into thin slabs, hope for the best, and end up with columns that tilt as the anchors work loose over years of thermal cycling. The right fix is a poured pad at the anchor points (a two-day concrete job with a proper cure), or a slab section replacement. It is not glamorous, but a lift is a twenty-year piece of equipment and the concrete has to actually hold it. Do not fake it on concrete.
Item four: think through alignment work specifically
Our farmer wanted to do his own alignment. Alignment work on automotive two post lifts is different than on a four-post alignment lift — you cannot use turnplates on a two-post the same way, because the vehicle is hanging from its frame, not sitting on its wheels. Two-post alignment is usually toe-and-camber-only work using a laser or string setup with the vehicle unweighted, or a rolling toe adjustment with the vehicle set back down and rolled a few feet to settle suspension.
For a farm-shop owner doing his own alignment on his own trucks, that is completely workable. It is not the same as running a commercial alignment shop, and we made that distinction clear before he bought. If he ever wanted a proper commercial alignment operation he would need a four-post alignment lift with turnplates and slip plates, which is a different piece of equipment. For the volume he was talking about — his own trucks, four or five alignments a year — the two-post approach is exactly right. Item five: door width and drive-in access
Farm shops usually have big doors, but not always in the right shape. Our farmer’s shop had a fourteen-foot overhead door on the entry side but only a twelve-foot side door. We measured the drive-in path with a wide-mirror dually template and confirmed clearance in and out of the lift position.
The number that trips up farm-shop installs is the vertical clearance under the door tracks. If your door is fourteen feet wide but the tracks come down to nine feet clear at the top of the opening, a full-size pickup with a tool cap will not fit. Measure the actual vertical clearance at the door, not just the door’s stated height. Once the lift is installed and the truck is under it, this becomes a permanent workflow item — you want to know it works from day one before you buy any automotive two post lifts.
Item six: heat, humidity, and rural climate cycling
Farm shops in northwest Iowa see wild temperature swings. A shop that hits zero degrees in January and ninety-plus in July puts thermal stress on hydraulic hoses, seals, and cable jackets. This is a small consideration for daily commercial shops (which usually run heated year-round) but a real consideration for a farm shop that may not be heated in the coldest months. We recommend a shop with a lift maintain at least freezing-plus temperatures year-round to keep the hydraulic fluid at reasonable viscosity and the seals from cracking.
The farmer already had a hanging propane radiant heater and would leave the shop at forty degrees through winter. That is fine for the equipment. If your farm shop is unheated and you want to lift year-round, plan on a radiant heater investment — it is a modest cost and it pays back in equipment life.
