A dirt-track race team crew chief in northeast Iowa called us in the fall wanting help specifying automotive two post lifts for their new shop. They needed to run annual state inspection on the crew’s daily drivers, cycle the race car up and down two dozen times a season, and know exactly how the warranty would work if something failed mid-season. Their shop was going from a rented rural stall to a purpose-built 40×60 building, and they wanted the decision made right the first time. Branch one: budget bracket first, then everything else

Every race team we work with wants to talk features first and budget second. We reverse that. The bracket a shop is buying in determines which brands, which capacities, and which warranty tiers are on the table. Team budgets for the first lift in a new shop tend to land in three bands. The entry band gets you a solid ten-thousand-pound imported symmetric unit. The mid band opens up asymmetric geometry, taller columns, and one of the mainstream brands. The upper band puts you on premium equipment with the full warranty package.

The northeast Iowa team landed in the mid band. That immediately narrowed the field of automotive two post lifts to about four models across three brands, and we could stop wasting time on options they weren’t going to pick anyway. Race teams have less patience for open-ended shopping than home garages do — a season is coming and the lift needs to be operational. Setting the bracket up front collapses the decision fast.

Branch two: capacity for the crew’s daily drivers

The race car itself is 3,050 lbs. It never stresses a lift. What actually stresses the lift is the crew’s daily driver fleet — four pickup trucks, one crossover, and the tow rig that occasionally comes in for brake work. The heaviest was a 3/4-ton diesel at just over 8,000 lbs. That puts them at ten thousand capacity as a bare minimum. We recommend adding at least 20% headroom, which pushed the choice to twelve thousand.

Twelve thousand pound automotive two post lifts run a few hundred more than ten thousand. For a race team that already has diesel trucks in the fleet, that’s cheap insurance. It also opens up future flexibility — nothing more painful than buying a lift that fits your current fleet and outgrowing it in year three because somebody bought a heavier tow rig. Capacity choice is one of the two decisions in the tree that’s hardest to reverse later, so we push teams to size up rather than sideways.

Branch three: symmetric or asymmetric for annual state inspection

Iowa doesn’t have a general safety inspection program, but the team’s home track and their series both require annual technical inspections on the race car, and the crew’s daily drivers get pre-trip inspections before every long tow. That’s a lot of quick up-down cycles with different vehicle types. Asymmetric geometry — where the columns rotate and the vehicle sits back — makes door access easier on cars and coupes, which speeds up any inspection where you’re reaching into the cabin between lifts.

Symmetric is faster for trucks because the vehicle centers between the columns. For a fleet that’s mostly trucks with a light race car, we could argue either way. The team went asymmetric for the door clearance on the race car and the daily-driver sedans. It was the right call. Asymmetric automotive two post lifts have become the default for mixed-fleet shops for exactly this reason — you don’t often regret buying it, but you frequently regret buying symmetric.

Branch four: overhead versus baseplate

Ceiling height is the constraint that sinks more lift purchases than any other single factor. Their new shop had 14-foot walls with open trusses and no drop ceiling. That’s plenty of room for an overhead unit and no reason to go baseplate. Overhead automotive two post lifts have a cleaner column footprint at floor level, which matters when you’re rolling a tool cart or a torque wrench cart around the base of the columns during a fast pit-crew style service.

Baseplate designs exist for shops that don’t have the overhead clearance — usually anything under about 11-and-a-half feet of usable ceiling. They work fine but they add a floor plate that runs between the columns, which is a mild trip hazard and adds a shin-height obstacle. If the ceiling is there, use it. This team’s build gave us the ceiling, so overhead was the easy branch.

Branch five: warranty tier and where the labor sits

This is where race teams differ from body shops. A body shop can absorb a week of downtime waiting on a warranty part; a race team can’t. So we spent extra time on warranty specifics. The mid-band mainstream automotive two post lifts we quoted carried a structural warranty in the 5-10 year range depending on brand, a cylinder and hydraulic warranty around 2 years, and an electrical/wear-item warranty around 1 year.

What matters more than the length is how the labor claim works. Most brands cover parts and expect the owner to swap them or pay a local installer. On a lift installed by us, we handle the labor as part of the ownership relationship — we don’t charge for the diagnosis visit on covered failures. That local-service piece is worth more to a race team than an extra year of parts coverage from a distant manufacturer. Where the labor sits when something breaks is the second decision in the tree that’s hard to reverse — pick a supplier who lives near your shop.

Branch six: claim workflow if something actually breaks

We walk every race team through the exact workflow: what happens if the lift fails on a Thursday and they have a Saturday race. Step one is a call to us. Step two is diagnosis — usually over video, sometimes with a visit. Step three is a warranty parts request to the manufacturer, which for our stocked brands typically ships in 24-72 hours ground. Step four is install of the replacement part, which we schedule at the shop’s convenience.

Most in-season failures we’ve seen on automotive two post lifts have been either a hydraulic hose that started weeping (common wear item, in stock locally, replaced in an afternoon) or an equalizer cable that started fraying at the end of its service life. Neither takes the lift out of service for a whole race weekend if the shop calls the moment they see the problem. The failures that do take a shop out for a week are the ones nobody calls about until Friday afternoon.

Branch seven: the final spec and what got ordered

End of the decision tree for the northeast Iowa team: 12,000 lb asymmetric overhead automotive two post lifts, single-phase 230V, from a mainstream brand with a 10-year structural warranty. Delivered within seven days of order, installed by us over a Friday and Saturday so the shop was operational the following Monday. Total install-day team on our side: two techs, one truck, one core-drill for anchors.

Race season started six weeks later and the lift has run every crew vehicle and the race car many times over since. Zero warranty claims to date, one preventive cable retensioning done at the six-month mark, one hydraulic fluid top-off. That’s the standard first-year story for well-specified equipment.
