Last year we installed a pair of automotive two post lifts for a mobile mechanic who was finally putting down roots in the Quad Cities. He had spent nine years chasing suspension jobs out of a service van — struts, shocks, control arms, sway-bar links — and the shop he was outfitting had a 200-amp service panel, 12-foot ceilings, and a single-phase 240V feed. The install itself was straightforward once we walked through the electrical requirements with him. But the phone call that started the project was the one thousands of mobile techs make every year: what does it actually take to wire and pour concrete for a real shop, and can I keep working on suspensions the same way I do now? This is the full walkthrough of that install and what it cost.

The customer, the bay, and the vehicle mix

Our customer ran a solo mobile-mechanic operation across the Quad Cities — Bettendorf, Davenport, Moline, and out to the small farming towns north of the river. Most of his work was suspension: rear shocks on daily-driver sedans, front struts on 10-year-old crossovers, and the occasional coil-spring swap on a lifted truck. He wanted to stop crawling on gravel driveways in January and finally lift vehicles in a heated bay. His shop was a converted machine shed with a 40-by-30 footprint, one 12-foot overhead door, and a 200-amp main panel already inside.

We quoted him a pair of Challenger CL10 automotive two post lifts — 10,000 lb capacity, symmetric, clear-floor, ALI Gold. The CL10 covered his vehicle mix without leaving him underbought if he took on a diesel truck later. It also fit his 12-foot ceiling with three inches of overhead clearance, which is the number we want to see minimum on any two-post install.

Electrical circuit and phase requirements

Every two-post lift we install runs on one of three electrical configurations: single-phase 208-230V, three-phase 208-230V, or three-phase 460V. The Challenger CL10 ships in either single-phase or three-phase — the customer picks at order time based on what the shop panel can deliver. Our Quad Cities customer had single-phase service, which is what 95 percent of home-garage and light-commercial shops have in eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Three-phase is an urban and industrial-park feature; it does not exist in most rural pole barns.

The CL10 in single-phase pulls 24 amps at start under full load and settles at about 18 amps once the motor is spinning. That means a dedicated 30-amp 240V circuit per lift, wired with 10-gauge copper on a two-pole 30-amp breaker. Two lifts equal two 30-amp circuits — 60 amps of panel capacity dedicated to lifting. His 200-amp panel had plenty of headroom. Anyone shopping automotive two post lifts should run this math against their existing panel before ordering, not after.

The concrete question — thickness, PSI, and cure age

ALI requires 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum for any two-post install, with at least 28 days of cure age before anchors go down. Our customer’s shed had been poured 18 years earlier at 5 inches — we cored a plug in each column location to confirm — and the concrete tested well above 3,000 PSI at that age. Older, well-cured concrete is actually stronger than fresh 4-inch pour in most cases. What we watch for is rebar spacing (six-inch on center is common, and we drill between rebar) and any expansion joints within 12 inches of a proposed column location.

If you are still designing your shop, spec 6 inches of 4,000 PSI concrete with fiber reinforcement or #4 rebar on 12-inch centers. That over-pour costs a few hundred dollars extra and futureproofs the pad for any lift you will ever install — from a 10K CL10 to a 30K four-post to a mobile-column set. The customers who regret their concrete years later are the ones who saved $400 on the pour and then can’t upgrade to heavier automotive two post lifts.

The install day itself

Our crew showed up at 7 a.m. on a Tuesday. Concrete had been swept and washed the day before. We unloaded columns, ran a laser level across the pad to confirm flatness within 1/4 inch across the column footprint, and marked anchor holes with a template. Drilling four anchor holes per column — eight total for a pair of lifts — took about 90 minutes on a hammer drill with a fresh SDS-Max bit. We use only ALI-approved wedge anchors torqued to the manufacturer’s spec sheet.

Columns went up by lunch. Overhead beam was set and torqued by 2 p.m. Cables were run, tensioned, and equalized by 3:30. Hydraulic power unit wired, oil filled, air bled, and both lifts tested with an empty rise-and-lower cycle by 4:30. We finished the second lift by 5, walked our customer through his operator manual and PM schedule, and were on the road home to Ames before dark. Total install time for a pair of automotive two post lifts on a prepared pad: about ten hours with two techs.

First suspension job on the new lifts

Our customer called us the next Friday because he had lined up a front-strut replacement on a Subaru Outback for that morning and wanted to walk through the arm-adapter procedure before he started. Subaru pinch-weld lift points sit inches inside the rocker panel and can be crushed if the pad is not centered. We had shipped him the Rotary/Challenger cross-compatible pinch-weld adapters as part of the accessory pack — a $200 upcharge that saves a $2,000 body panel every time it prevents a bad pad placement.

He lifted the Outback in about four minutes, pulled both front struts in about 30, and was assembled and back on the ground before lunch. The first job on any new lift is when you find out whether the arm geometry, the pad style, and the height range match your work. His did. Suspension work is the sweet spot for two-post lifts because the tech needs both wheels off the ground at eye level, and the swing arms clear every strut tower we deal with.

Total project cost and payback math

Two Challenger CL10 automotive two post lifts, delivered and installed in the Quad Cities, landed in the mid five figures — pad already poured, electrical already in place. Add wedge anchors, adapter pack, and freight and the number moved a few hundred dollars. If you have to add a 30-amp subpanel or upgrade a main service, factor another mid four figures for a licensed electrician. If you have to pour new concrete, add another mid four figures for a good contractor.

Payback for a mobile mechanic converting to shop-based work usually runs 18 to 30 months. Our customer estimated he was billing 20 percent more per hour on lifted work compared to driveway work, and he was doing 40 percent more jobs per week because the lift cut suspension turn-time roughly in half. Payback in his case looked like it would land around month 20 — which matches the industry pattern we see on almost every mobile-to-shop conversion we install in eastern Iowa and western Illinois.
