Weekend mechanics buying automotive two post lifts for restoration and metal-fab work almost always ask us the wrong first question. They want to know which brand is best. The right first question, especially for a northern Missouri hobby shop where the pad may have been poured decades ago by a farmer with whatever cement mix was on the truck that afternoon, is whether the concrete under your feet can actually hold a lift up. We have driven out to more than one owner’s shop and had to give the honest answer that the slab needed work before any lift went in. This pre-purchase checklist walks through the whole conversation.

Start With Slab Thickness, Not With Brand Selection
The manufacturer spec on nearly every automotive two post lifts model we sell is four to six inches of 3,000-plus PSI concrete with proper reinforcement. Four inches is the absolute minimum on a light-duty 9,000 or 10,000-pound lift; six inches is the honest recommendation for anything 12,000 pounds or heavier, and for any lift that will see repeated cycling with vehicles near capacity. A restoration hobbyist working on old trucks and pulling drivetrains is cycling the lift, not just parking a car on it, and that duty cycle is what determines slab spec.
The best way to verify thickness is to drill a small test hole with a masonry bit in an inconspicuous corner of the shop. When you break through, measure. If you find three inches with visible aggregate voids underneath, you have a decision to make. On the projects where we have seen owners try to make a thin slab work by adding a bolt-on plate or extra epoxy anchors, the failure mode is not immediate — it is anchor pull-out at year three or four, right after the anchor has been through a few freeze-thaw cycles.
PSI Matters as Much as Thickness
Most Iowa and northern Missouri residential slabs poured before about 1990 came in at somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 PSI. That was the standard for garage floors when nobody planned to hang eight tons of steel off the corners. Modern spec for automotive two post lifts is 3,000 PSI minimum, and 4,000 is better. If you do not know what your slab tests at, the practical assumption is to treat any older pour as suspect and plan on either a rebound-hammer test or, more commonly, a section removal and re-pour to spec.
A four-by-four cutout under each column, dug to eight or ten inches deep, filled with rebar-tied 4,000 PSI mix, and cured for a full 28 days before install, is the belt-and-suspenders approach we recommend when owners want to keep an old floor for everything else. The columns get a proper footing, the surrounding concrete stays where it is, and the anchors bite into fresh, engineered concrete. Rebar and Reinforcement: What the Manual Actually Requires
Every manufacturer manual we have read requires reinforced concrete. “Reinforced” is not just wire mesh laid on the ground before the pour. It means either welded wire fabric on chairs at the mid-plane, or, better, number-three or number-four rebar on eighteen-inch centers, tied in a grid. If you or a previous owner poured the pad on plastic sheeting over gravel with mesh dropped on top, the mesh is almost certainly sitting on the bottom of the slab where it does nothing.
You cannot fix rebar retroactively without removing the slab. What you can do is verify: rent or borrow a rebar-locator (a magnetic scanner that runs about fifty dollars a day at a rental yard), map the reinforcement in the intended anchor zone, and decide from there. If the reinforcement is present and reasonably placed, you are probably fine. If it is not, plan for section replacement in the column footprints. This is the single most common conversation we have with restoration hobbyists buying automotive two post lifts for a fifty-year-old pole shop.
Ceiling Height: The Other Number That Kills Deals
Restoration work often involves tall vehicles — vintage pickups, straight-axle Broncos, van conversions — and the two-post lift has to be able to raise those to a working height without the roof scraping ceiling. Most 10,000-pound automotive two post lifts want twelve feet of clear ceiling to reach full lift. Twelve-foot side walls with typical truss height at the peak works. Ten-foot side walls do not, unless you go to a low-ceiling model or run the truck up short.
Measure at the actual install point, not at the peak of the ceiling. Trusses, ductwork, light fixtures, and door tracks all steal clearance. If your peak is thirteen feet but the truss chords at the install location put you at eleven-six, you need to plan for the eleven-six number. We have quoted asymmetric low-ceiling variants for northern Missouri pole barns that started life as grain storage and never had lift geometry in mind, and there is almost always a solvable configuration if you catch it during the pre-purchase phase.
Power, Drainage, and the Small Details That Trip People Up
A single-phase 220V circuit within reasonable range of the lift is required for the power unit on almost every residential automotive two post lifts model. If your shop has 110V only, you will need to run a new circuit, and depending on your service capacity that can add anywhere from a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars to the project. Get an electrician’s number before you buy, not after. Same for any plumbing that intersects the install footprint — we have found floor drains and even old cast-iron sewer lines running exactly where a column wanted to go.
Drainage in the shop matters too. Restoration work involves fluids, and the lift cycles bring vehicles up and down over the same square footage repeatedly. If oil, coolant, or brake fluid pools around a column base, it eats the paint and eventually the primer, and the column starts to look ugly by year five. Plan a drip pan location and a way to sweep or squeegee the pad, and your lift will look almost new twenty years in.
Budget: What Weekend Shops Actually Spend
Restoration hobbyists usually come to us with a budget number in mind and then discover the number needs a friend. The lift itself, for a quality 10,000-pound two-post, runs in the mid four figures to low five figures depending on brand and configuration. Freight to northern Missouri from our Iowa warehouse adds a few hundred more. Professional install adds a mid-three-figure to low-four-figure line depending on drive time. Concrete work, if needed, is a whole separate conversation with a local contractor.
All in, a first-class automotive two post lifts installation into a shop that needs slab work often lands close to double the sticker price of the lift itself. That is not a hidden cost — it is the honest cost, and we lay it all out in the quote. The alternative is buying a cheap import lift, DIY-installing it into a thin slab, and dealing with the failure five years later. We have seen that movie many times. The Final Walk-Through Before You Sign
Before you sign a purchase order on any lift, walk your shop with a printed manufacturer install manual in your hand. Confirm slab thickness at the intended columns. Confirm PSI and reinforcement. Confirm clear ceiling at the actual install point. Confirm power. Confirm door swing so arms can reach the vehicle. Confirm forklift or telehandler access for unloading. If any of those checks fail, address the failing item before you place the order — not after the crate is on your driveway.
