The mistake we see most often is a buyer stretching for a high-tier lift on financing that’s too aggressive, then feeling squeezed for the next five years. Better to buy a mid-tier lift outright and put the difference into parts inventory or a second bay upgrade. Step Four: Verify the Site Meets the Lift
Once configuration is chosen, verify the site can support the lift you’ve picked. For our crew chief this was straightforward. Six-inch pad at 4,000 PSI (paperwork verified), 220V circuit already run to the shop wall, 13-foot ceiling at the truss chord, and a 12-foot overhead door for vehicle access. Anything that had been marginal, say a four-inch slab or a 20-amp circuit, would have forced either a site upgrade before install or a different lift selection. We’ve had racing teams walk in wanting a specific lift and walk out with a different one after we measured their shop. That’s normal.
Bought-then-modified sites cost more than picked-with-the-site-in-mind automotive two post lifts. Verify slab thickness and PSI before you sign. If you don’t have paperwork, a masonry contractor can core a small sample and test it for under two hundred dollars. Verify electrical service. A licensed electrician can spec the required circuit and give you a firm bid. Verify ceiling. Measure to the underside of the truss chord, not to the sidewall height. Verify door width and height. A lifted car needs to enter unobstructed. These aren’t complicated checks, and doing them before you buy prevents the most expensive category of install-day surprise. Year zero: acquisition cost plus install plus electrical plus any site prep. Years one through five: routine maintenance, fluid changes, cable inspections, arm-restraint checks, typically less than two hundred dollars per year if the owner does the work, closer to five hundred if a dealer handles it.
Year five to eight: expect one hydraulic cylinder rebuild at a couple hundred dollars in parts if self-service, more if outsourced. Year ten to fifteen: possible cable replacement, safety-lock cable service, second cylinder rebuild. Year fifteen to twenty: paint touch-up, hydraulic hose replacement, occasional part refresh. Total 20-year cost on a well-maintained mid-tier lift lands somewhere in the low five figures over acquisition, or roughly five hundred to one thousand dollars per year of ownership. Compare that to the labor savings on twenty years of vehicle service in a racing team’s shop, and the ROI is not close. The lift pays for itself and its maintenance many times over. The big number is at year zero, and then it’s mostly quiet after that.
Step Six: Choose the Dealer, Not Just the Lift

Step Seven: Sign, Install, and Get to Work
The last step on the decision tree is executing the purchase and moving forward without second-guessing.
