A small-fleet operator in Dubuque asked us last month whether he should spec overhead or baseplate for the two automotive two post lifts he is adding to his van-service bay. He runs a dozen delivery vans doing CV axle and half-shaft work on a weekly basis and the bay ceiling is a marginal 11 feet 8 inches, which is exactly the range where the answer depends on details. We laid out the full side-by-side for him over about forty minutes on the phone, and we thought other Dubuque small-fleet buyers might benefit from the same comparison written down. Here is how the two configurations actually compare.

The ceiling height decision

Overhead two-post equipment typically needs 145 to 155 inches of clear ceiling to install and lift a full-size van to safe working height. Baseplate designs bring that number down to about 138 to 142 inches because there is no crossbar and the columns can be shorter. A Dubuque fleet bay with 11 feet 8 inches — that is 140 inches — is on the bubble for overhead and comfortable for baseplate. In our small-fleet operator’s case the answer was going to be baseplate for at least one of the two lifts.

The catch is that vehicle height matters too. A Sprinter van tops out around 96 inches, a Transit high-roof similar. Lifting one seven feet in the air on a 140-inch ceiling puts the roof less than a foot from the joists. That is fine for wheels-off suspension and CV work, but it is uncomfortable for anything requiring the tech on top of the van. Overhead automotive two post lifts trade the ceiling budget for a cleaner floor. Baseplate does the opposite.

Floor plate: the daily tripping hazard

Baseplate equipment routes the hydraulic and equalizer lines across the floor between the two columns in a low-profile cover plate. That plate is a real tripping hazard for a tech pushing a jack, pulling a hose, or carrying an axle assembly. In a busy Dubuque van-service bay, techs walk across that gap dozens of times a shift. The floor plate slopes gently so pallets and jacks roll over it, but a distracted foot can catch it.

Overhead moves those lines to the top and clears the floor completely. That is a genuine safety advantage in a fleet bay running six days a week. We push overhead when the ceiling can handle it, exactly because the floor is safer over a ten-year working life. Small-fleet operators who ignore this end up with worn-out shoes, tripping incidents, and eventually an OSHA-worthy near miss. For automotive two post lifts destined for busy commercial use, ceiling height allowing, overhead almost always wins the floor-safety comparison.

Cable and hose access for service

When it comes time to replace equalizer cables or a hydraulic hose — and it will, every eight to twelve years — access is dramatically easier on baseplate. Both cables and both hoses run through the low floor cover. Pop the plate, inspect the whole span, and replace as needed. It is a two-hour job. Overhead cables run through the crossbar and require pulling the top-cover cap, snaking new cable through the pulley set, and re-tensioning at both columns. That is a four-to-six-hour job.

Neither is difficult, but the frequency and speed of service work in a fleet environment tips the scale slightly toward baseplate. A small-fleet operator who plans to keep the automotive two post lifts for fifteen years will experience roughly two cable replacement cycles. Two extra hours per cycle on overhead versus baseplate is a real cost measured in downtime. Not decisive on its own — but a factor. In the Dubuque fleet case we did in the end split the difference and installed one of each.

Column footprint and van bay width

Overhead and baseplate columns are similar in footprint at the base, but overhead crossbars extend outward slightly at the top. In a bay with headers or side-mounted lift arms already installed, the overhead crossbar can conflict. Baseplate is more forgiving to unusual bay geometry. For most Dubuque fleet bays with clean rectangular ceilings, footprint is a wash between the two configurations.

Column spacing matters more than choice of configuration. For a Sprinter or a Transit, you want at least 132 inches of clear column spacing to catch the OEM lift points with three-stage arms. Some baseplate designs offer wider column spacing than overhead in the same capacity class — check the spec sheet. We usually recommend a wider spacing than the manufacturer minimum because it accelerates every daily task on automotive two post lifts. Fleets that rotate ten van variants through the same bay appreciate the extra reach after the first month.

Price and freight comparison

Baseplate and overhead in the same capacity class are usually within a couple hundred dollars of each other at MSRP. Freight is basically the same because both crate at similar dimensions. Where the cost diverges is anchor count — baseplate requires more anchors per column because the floor plate itself is anchored — and slab work if the slab needs a top-up under the plate. In practice, install labor between the two is within an hour of each other.

Where you may see a bigger dollar swing is in electrical routing. Baseplate keeps the power drop simpler because the disconnect can mount low on either column. Overhead sometimes needs a longer run to reach the crossbar-mounted power unit. Neither is a deal-breaker. For a Dubuque small-fleet operator weighing automotive two post lifts of both types, budget the same equipment cost and add a couple hundred to overhead for electrical if the panel is far from the bay. Not enough to move the decision either way — capacity and safety should drive it.

How CV axle work actually feels on each

Half-shaft removal on a van is quick on either configuration because the wheel hangs free the moment you clear the ground. Where the two configurations differ is when you are wrestling a stuck outer CV joint out of a knuckle. Overhead gives you unobstructed floor for a slide hammer or a puller — you can back up, get a swing, and pop the joint free. Baseplate has the floor plate at your feet, which is not a big deal but occasionally forces an awkward stance.

For the Dubuque operator’s specific use case — vans in for CV, half-shaft, and inner boot replacements at high frequency — we recommended overhead for the primary bay and baseplate for the second bay. That gives the shop both configurations to compare in daily use, and by year two the fleet will know which one they want to standardize on. This is the kind of hedge we help small-fleet buyers plan when they are adding automotive two post lifts in pairs. One does not have to match the other.

The Dubuque recommendation, in summary

If your Dubuque bay has 12-foot clear ceilings or better, overhead is the default because the floor stays cleaner and safety is higher over a decade of use. If your ceiling is under 12 feet, baseplate is the default because you would otherwise hit the crossbar or not lift high enough. If the bay is on the bubble at 11 feet 8 inches to 12 feet 2 inches — which is a lot of retrofitted metro Dubuque commercial space — either can work, and the choice comes down to the specific vehicles you lift.

Fleet operators tend to over-analyze this decision. The truth is both configurations, from an ALI-certified brand like Rotary or Challenger, will run 15 years with routine maintenance.
