When a family shop hands us a purchase order for a lift that daily service work will happen on, we treat the ALI Gold label as the floor, not a bonus. Here is why that matters for a three-generation garage. OSHA 1910.176 and ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2020 both point to ALI-certified lifts as the presumed standard of care. Your insurance carrier will look at the sticker after any incident, and so will a plaintiff’s attorney. We have seen shops that bought a $2,800 gray-market 2-post lose coverage after a wheel-off tire rotation went sideways. Real dimensions that matter for a tire-rotation bay
A 10K 2-post looks compact on a spec sheet and enormous once it is on the floor. The lesson we repeat to every buyer: measure four things before you commit to any car lift automotive purchase. First, ceiling to lowest obstruction, not the peak but the light, the sprinkler head, or the HVAC duct. Second, column-to-column width at the pad locations. Symmetric vs asymmetric: the car lift automotive arm decision

A symmetric 2-post centers the vehicle between the columns; the tech walks around the front and back but never squeezes past a column at the door. An asymmetric shifts the vehicle back about 30% so the door swings clear of the column, which is great for a body-shop-adjacent bay where cars come in with fresh paint you cannot bump.
Versymmetric, the Rotary and Challenger hybrid, lets the arms swing either way from the same carriage, and it is what most of our tire-rotation customers ultimately pick. It is the most flexible car lift automotive shops can install if the vehicle mix is anything but pure pickups. The Minnesota shop I mentioned rotates everything from Corollas to F-350s, and the Versymmetric CL10V3 handled both without arm swaps. Set the door on the short side for sedans, ratchet the arms out for a dually — same footprint, same day.
Load capacity: why we rarely recommend under 10,000 lb
The number on the plate is not a cushion, it is a hard limit. A 9,000 lb 2-post is genuinely fine for cars and half-ton pickups, but it excludes any three-quarter-ton, any long-bed diesel, any Sprinter or Transit van. Modern trucks have crept heavier every model year, and a 2024 F-250 crew cab 4×4 curb-weights around 7,400 lb before you add a fuel-service tank or a topper. For any general-purpose car lift automotive shops will use for a decade, we default to 10,000 lb capacity minimum. The price difference over 9,000 lb is around $150, and it buys the entire truck market.
For dealership overflow or a shop that does a lot of chassis-cab work, we push customers to 12,000 or 15,000 lb, meaning Rotary SPOA12, Challenger CL12, or BendPak XPR-15CL. The taller columns add ceiling requirement, so measure first. A note on used lifts: an ALI Gold certification does not transfer if the lift left the factory pre-2005. Anything older than that we treat as parts, not equipment, no matter what the seller claims about the pedigree.
Electrical and hydraulic: 208, 230, or single phase
Most family garages we quote have single-phase 230V service, which every major 10K 2-post supports out of the box with a factory motor swap. Three-phase 208 or 230 is faster and cooler-running — a three-phase motor will do a full up cycle in about 45 seconds where a single-phase takes 55 to 60. If the shop is on rural single-phase and getting three-phase run to the pole costs $8,000, we tell them to stay single-phase and never look back. If the panel already has three-phase, we spec the three-phase motor because it lasts longer under a heavy duty cycle.
Hydraulic-wise, every ALI Gold 10K we sell uses AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, roughly two gallons per column. We refill and bleed on install, and we recommend a fluid change at year seven or 10,000 cycles, whichever comes first.
