A four-wheel pad-and-rotor is a forty-to-fifty-minute book time and a real-world thirty-five-to-fifty-five minute service. Brochure ceiling height for a symmetric 2-post is usually listed at eleven-foot-six or twelve-foot. That is the minimum for the lift itself to fit. It is not the number you spec against. The number you spec against is total-clearance-plus-vehicle-height. A twelve-foot ceiling with a 2-post lift’s fifteen-foot lift-height column will limit a Ram 3500 with a topper to about five and a half feet of wheels-free lift, which is too low for comfortable brake work. Practical brake service wants the tech standing under the vehicle without hunching, which means seventy-two inches of clearance between the shop floor and the vehicle’s frame.
Do the math backwards. A Ram 3500 crew cab is around seventy-eight inches tall. Add seventy-two inches of tech clearance. That is 150 inches or twelve-foot-six of ceiling needed to lift the truck to a comfortable working height. A twelve-foot ceiling forces the tech to bend. Techs open the door to shift into neutral, to grab a work order, to check odometer, twenty times a shift. On a symmetric lift, they hit column. On an asymmetric lift with columns offset rearward, they swing free.
