Why CV Axle Work Demands a Two-Post

CV axle replacement is a wheels-free operation. You are pulling the axle out of the transaxle spline and out of the hub, and the wheel has to come off the strut assembly. On a drive-on four-post, the wheels stay loaded on the runway, which means you cannot pull the axle without adding a bridge jack, unloading the suspension, and working around the ramps. A two-post asymmetric raises the vehicle by the pinch welds or frame points and leaves all four wheels hanging free. That is the geometry the job actually needs.

The right car lift automotive spec for a shop doing FWD and AWD axle work is a 10,000-pound asymmetric two-post with three-stage arms. The three-stage arm folds shorter than a two-stage, which lets you reach the pinch weld on a low unibody sedan without the arm rest pad hitting the rocker panel. On a Honda Odyssey or a Chrysler Pacifica, the difference between two-stage and three-stage arms is the difference between five minutes of arm-swinging and a clean set in under a minute. Real Dimensions That Matter on the Bay Floor

A Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric two-post has an overall width of 137 inches column-to-column outside, and a drive-through of 100 inches between columns. Overall height on the overhead crossbar model is 145 inches, and the low-ceiling floorplate version comes in around 111 inches. Rise is 74 inches to the pad, and full rise with the pad extenders puts the frame around 80 inches off the floor. Those numbers matter because a car lift automotive install in a 1920s-era Illinois bay with a 12-foot ceiling has to clear the overhead model, and most legacy bays do.

A Challenger CL10 asymmetric hits similar footprint numbers, with a slightly different column offset that some third-generation techs prefer for the driver-door swing. The column shape on the Challenger is a rounded rectangle rather than a square, and the arm restraint geometry is different. Neither is better on paper, but in a shop where techs have run Challenger arms for thirty years, sticking with Challenger saves a training curve. If you are switching brands, budget a week of muscle-memory retraining before productivity comes back to baseline. That is real time on the schedule, not a footnote.

Brand History: Rotary and Challenger Are Not New Names

The two names we recommend for a car lift automotive purchase in a serious shop have deep history. Rotary Lift has been building lifts in Madison, Indiana since the 1920s, and the SPOA10 lineage traces back through decades of continuous production. Challenger Lifts came out of the 1980s consolidation of independent lift makers and has been a mainstay of the domestic market ever since. Both brands stayed under U.S. or North American manufacturing when a lot of the industry moved offshore in the 2000s.

For a third-generation shop that has been running the same lifts for twenty-plus years, that continuity matters. A Rotary lift installed in 1998 can still get factory replacement cables, cylinders, and locking dogs today. A Challenger lift from 2001 has the same story. The no-name imports that crowded the market in the 2010s do not have that pipeline, and shops that bought them are now scrapping units that are structurally fine but unrepairable because the manufacturer is gone. When you buy Rotary or Challenger, you are also buying a twenty-year parts pipeline that keeps the lift working past the payback period.

Parts Pipeline for Western Illinois Shops

Arm Geometry and CV Axle Access Angles

The geometry that matters most for CV axle work is arm sweep and pad reach. A three-stage front arm sweeps from about 18 inches to 62 inches of reach, which lets you place the pad under the frame rail of anything from a Miata to a Ford Transit. The rear arms on an asymmetric are typically two-stage and reach from 30 to 55 inches. When you set an FWD vehicle, the fronts go short under the front subframe pinch weld and the rears go long under the rear jacking point. That gives you a stable set with the vehicle rotated 30 degrees off column axis, which is the asymmetric geometry.

Once the vehicle is up, you have full access to the front wheels for tie rod, ball joint, hub, and axle work. You can swing an axle out at any angle because there is nothing under the car. A four-post with a bridge jack cannot deliver that access, and any car lift automotive shop doing high-volume axle work will burn out on the compromise inside six months. Spec the two-post from day one and save the retrofit cost.

Installation Realities in Older Illinois Bays

Third-generation Illinois shops often sit in buildings older than the 1970s. That means old concrete, sometimes core-drilled and patched from a previous lift, and floor slopes that never mattered when the bay was only rolling gearheads on creepers. Before we schedule an install, we send a checklist covering slab thickness, anchor pattern from any prior lift, ceiling clear height, and door width for delivery access. If the old anchors are wedge anchors in decent condition, we can often set the new lift on the same anchor pattern. If they are epoxy anchors or damaged concrete, we drill fresh holes at least six inches from the old ones.

Bay height is the second variable. A lot of legacy Illinois shops have 11 feet clear, which fits a Rotary or Challenger floorplate model but not the overhead. Floorplate lifts add a cross-piece across the floor between the columns, which some techs dislike because a rolling floor jack has to lift over it. Others prefer floorplates because the hose runs are protected. It is a preference call, but the ceiling constraint often makes the choice for you.
