The shop owner needed a lift that could safely handle 6,500-pound built-out Wranglers and still fit in a rented rural building with imperfect concrete.

Why ALI Gold Certification Mattered for This Car Lift Automotive Install
The Automotive Lift Institute Gold certification is a third-party validation that a lift meets ANSI safety and performance standards under laboratory testing. Not every lift on the market carries it; some import brands and no-name entries skip the certification to keep costs down. For a commercial shop, ALI Gold matters for insurance, for reassuring customers who want their high-value vehicle on safe equipment, and for basic peace of mind that the lift will do what the label says under real load.
For this Iowa Great Lakes overland shop specifically, the certification carried extra weight because his customer base, off-road enthusiasts who’ve spent $40,000 to $100,000 on their build, is unusually attentive to shop equipment. Several of his customers had asked about lift certification before booking work. Walking a customer through the ALI Gold sticker on the column at drop-off was worth real money in customer confidence. Any car lift automotive purchase for a customer-facing specialty shop should include the ALI conversation as a criterion, not just capacity and price.
Sizing Capacity for Built and Modified Vehicles
The mistake shop owners make when specifying capacity for a build shop is using stock curb weights from the manufacturer specs. A stock JL Wrangler Rubicon is about 4,500 pounds; the same JL with a 3.5-inch lift, 37-inch tires, aluminum bumpers front and rear, sliders, a full roof-rack tent setup, and dual batteries can push 5,800 pounds. Add a full trail-ready load, recovery gear, fuel cans, coolers, a passenger, and the working weight climbs above 6,500 pounds. That’s before we talk about built Land Cruisers or built Ford Rangers with camper shells.
For this overland shop, we spec’d a 12,000-pound capacity two-post, well above the heaviest realistic built-out vehicle he’d service. The margin isn’t just about the raw number; it’s about the lift’s smooth operation at load, the safety lock engagement, the arm restraint behavior under torque, and the tech’s confidence that he’s not near the limit. Over-spec on capacity for a build shop is one of the easiest wins in the car lift automotive world, and the pricing delta from a 10K to a 12K two-post is small enough that it’s almost always the right call for a specialty shop.
The Rural Iowa Great Lakes Building Constraint
The shop building was a rented rural pole barn about 20 miles east of the lakes area. The ceiling was 12 feet clear at the peak, sloping to 10 feet at the eave. The slab was a 1990s pour, 4 inches nominal, with visible cracks near a control joint. The rollup door was 10 feet wide by 9 feet tall. The building was not built as an automotive service facility, but the shop owner had rented it because it was what he could afford in the area and there weren’t many alternatives.
We had to work within those constraints, not around them. The 12-foot peak ruled out an overhead two-post because the crossbar height would have crowded the tallest built Jeep’s roof rack. We went with a floorplate two-post that clears vertically as high as the vehicle allows. The rollup at 9 feet was a real limit; the shop had to lower any built vehicle over about 7 feet tall before driving in. And the slab needed a partial reinforcement pour at the anchor zones because the existing concrete was thin and cracked. A car lift automotive install in a rental pole barn is doable, but it takes specific planning.
The Slab Reinforcement We Ran
The existing slab tested at 3,100 PSI, which is above the manufacturer minimum for a 12,000 pound two-post. But the 4-inch thickness was at the bottom edge of what Rotary’s install manual accepts, and the visible cracking near the control joint made us nervous. Rather than assuming the slab would hold, we saw-cut a 5-foot by 5-foot square at each anchor location, removed the existing concrete, added rebar reinforcement, and poured 6-inch pads at each corner of the lift footprint.
The reinforcement work added about a week to the project timeline and a few thousand dollars to the install budget, but it turned a marginal slab into a definitively-solid anchor zone. The shop owner was on board because we walked him through what happens if an anchor pulls under load, which is not a scenario any shop wants to imagine with a built Wrangler at full height. This kind of slab work isn’t unique to this project. Any car lift automotive install on older or marginal concrete should include a specific inspection and reinforcement plan. Tire Rotation Workflow on a Built Off-Road Vehicle
Tire rotation on a lifted, big-tire off-road vehicle isn’t the same job as rotating tires on a sedan. A 37-inch tire on a 17-inch wheel weighs 70 to 90 pounds, and wrestling four of them around a lifted Jeep is a real workout. The lift needs to raise the vehicle to a comfortable working height for the tech, with enough clearance that a 37-inch tire will actually swing off the hub without hitting fender flares or the ground. That’s a taller lift than a passenger-car shop typically runs day-to-day.
For this Iowa Great Lakes shop, we spec’d the floorplate two-post to raise a built Wrangler about 62 inches at the pinch weld, enough to give the tech overhead clearance for tire swings and torque work, but low enough that the built roof rack still cleared the 12-foot peak. Any car lift automotive setup for an off-road specialty shop needs to think about the tire-swing radius at working height, not just the vertical height. Miss that and the tech is fighting the geometry every rotation, which slows the shop down and stresses the equipment.
The Rolling Jack Add-On for Solid Axle Work
The other decision on this build was whether to add a rolling jack accessory to the two-post. A rolling jack rides on the frame contact arms and lets the tech raise one axle independently of the vehicle body: useful for wheel-off work with the vehicle still supported, and essential for solid-axle swap work where the axle needs to move independently of the frame. On a build shop doing SAS work regularly, a rolling jack is not optional.
We added a Rotary rolling jack accessory rated for 6,000 pounds, well within margin for the biggest axle assembly the shop would work on. The rolling jack changed the tech’s workflow on almost every job, letting him drop and raise axles cleanly without shuffling floor jacks and stands under a raised vehicle. That kind of workflow improvement is what turns a car lift automotive install from a piece of equipment into a productivity multiplier. The rolling jack pays for itself in labor hours saved inside a year on a busy build shop, and the shop owner told us it was the accessory he’d never go without now.
The Final Setup and What It’s Doing a Year Later
The final install was a Rotary SPO12 floorplate two-post, 12,000-pound ALI Gold certified, with a 6,000-pound rolling jack accessory, installed on reinforced anchor pads in a rented pole barn near the lakes. Total project time from site survey to first working day was about seven weeks, with the slab reinforcement adding the biggest single time chunk. The shop has been running the lift on built Wranglers, 4Runners, and lifted Ford Rangers for over a year with zero service calls.
The shop owner has since raised his labor rate on complex builds and credits the lift’s capacity margin, the ALI Gold sticker, and the rolling jack for both the higher rate and the customer confidence that supports it. Not every car lift automotive install is going to run this cleanly, and not every rural pole barn is going to accept a commercial-grade two-post without complications.
