Start here: what a car lift automotive decision tree looks like
A restoration shop decision tree has three main branches: budget, capacity, and configuration. Budget determines whether you are looking at a home-storage 4-post, an entry commercial 2-post, or a heavy commercial 2-post or 4-post. Capacity is driven by the vehicles you plan to work on: pre-war coupes are light, muscle cars are middle-weight, 4×4 trucks and modern EVs are heavy. Configuration is driven by the type of work: full frame-off restorations favor 2-posts with open access, while long-term projects sitting on the lift for months favor 4-posts.
The mistake restoration shops make is trying to make one lift do everything. If you are doing frame-off work on classics and also servicing a modern shop truck occasionally, two lifts is often the right answer: a 4-post for long-term storage and a 2-post for open-underside work. Combined, a two-lift shop is more productive than a one-lift shop with any single car lift automotive setup, and the total cost is often within 20 percent of one high-end lift. Frame every decision below with the possibility of two lifts, not just one.
Branch one: budget under 6,000 dollars
If your total budget for a car lift automotive setup including install and electrical is in the sub-6,000 range, you are looking at a residential-grade 4-post or an entry commercial 2-post. For restoration work specifically, we lean 4-post at this budget for two reasons. First, a 4-post handles long-term project storage better than a 2-post, because the vehicle sits on its own wheels or on stands on the runways and does not put constant load on cylinder seals. Second, 4-posts at this budget are almost all cable-and-pulley designs, which are proven technology with cheap replacement parts.
The downside is that a 4-post limits open-underside access. You cannot pull a transmission from a 4-post the same way you can from a 2-post. For a restoration shop that is mostly doing body work and mechanical work above the frame, that is fine. For a restoration shop doing full frame-off work with the drivetrain out, the 4-post is a limitation you will feel every week. If you are budget-constrained, consider whether adding a rolling jack (a bridge jack that spans the 4-post runways) unlocks enough underside access to make the 4-post work. On most Cedar Falls shop builds we have done, the answer is yes for a mixed body-and-mechanical operation.
Branch two: mid-budget 6,000 to 10,000
In the 6,000 to 10,000 dollar range you can afford a real commercial 2-post car lift automotive setup, and for restoration work that is usually the right answer. A 10,000 pound commercial 2-post from Rotary or Challenger gives you full underside access, arm reach that handles a 32 Ford through an F-350 Super Duty, and a parts pipeline that will still be there in 25 years. Install adds another modest amount if you have us do it, or you can DIY with a helper and a rented forklift.
At this budget level, the specific choice comes down to overhead versus baseplate (dictated by your building’s ceiling), symmetric versus asymmetric arms (dictated by whether your customer cars have long doors that need to swing clear), and single-phase versus three-phase power (dictated by your service). Do not buy off the shelf without a shop-specific conversation.
Branch three: over 10,000 for heavy work
If your budget is over 10,000 and you are doing heavy restoration work (large trucks, RVs, heavy-body cars over 5,000 pounds), you are looking at a 12,000 pound 2-post, a commercial 4-post with rolling jack, or possibly a scissor lift for very specific frame-off applications. Each has trade-offs. The 12,000 pound 2-post is the workhorse choice and it handles almost anything a restoration shop will see. The heavy commercial 4-post with rolling jack gives you long-term project storage plus the ability to do mechanical work under the vehicle when needed. The scissor lift is a specialty option that shines for frame-only mounting and body-work station configurations, but it is not the primary lift for a general restoration shop.
The other consideration at this budget level is whether you are pouring a new slab or working with existing concrete. Heavier lifts require better slabs. If your Cedar Falls shop building has a slab of unknown age and quality, run a core sample before you buy the lift. We have restored a lot of buildings in the Cedar Valley area, and we know that many of them were poured in the 1950s or 1960s with unreinforced concrete. A modern car lift automotive setup on a 1950s slab is not a safe combination.
Electrical: single-phase vs three-phase reality
Cedar Falls commercial buildings vary widely on available electrical service. Some downtown buildings still run 220 single-phase because that is all the utility provisioned decades ago. Some newer light-industrial buildings have three-phase 208 or 460 volt service. Before you order any lift, have an electrician confirm exactly what you have at the panel and, more importantly, at the lift location. Wiring three-phase to a location that only has single-phase service means either a utility upgrade (thousands of dollars and weeks of wait time) or a rotary phase converter (also several thousand dollars and a maintenance item forever).
For most Cedar Falls restoration shops we work with, single-phase 220-volt is what they have and single-phase is what they order. The single-phase power unit runs a slightly larger motor to make the same lift speed, and it costs a bit more up front and a bit more in electricity, but it just works with the service you already have. Only order three-phase if you have documented three-phase service at the lift location and your electrician has confirmed the amperage is adequate. This is one of the most common car lift automotive ordering mistakes we see.
Cedar Falls old-building considerations
Many Cedar Valley shop buildings are historic structures with quirks that affect lift installs. Low ceilings from steel truss lines. Wooden floor joists that will not carry a slab. Party walls with businesses on the other side that will complain about drilling. Existing electrical service that was upgraded piecemeal over 60 years. None of these are dealbreakers, but each one changes what the right car lift automotive install looks like. A low-ceiling baseplate 2-post fits a lot of buildings that a standard overhead cannot. An adhesive-anchor install works on slabs where a wedge-anchor install would crack the concrete.

Restoration-specific features: turntables and jacking beams
Beyond the base lift, restoration shops need a few features that general repair shops do not.
