When a restoration shop owner in southwest Iowa calls us about their first real car lift automotive install, the conversation almost never starts with the lift. It starts with the garage. What is the ceiling height, is there three-phase power ready, where will the compressor sit, and how many vehicles need to be in the air at once? This guide is the decision tree we walk shop owners through, from budget through final configuration, so the garage grows with the work instead of boxing you in a year later.

Start with the work, not the lift

Restoration is different from general repair. A body shop rotating vehicles in and out every two hours cares about lift speed and duty cycle. A restoration shop cares about clearance, arm reach around fenders, and how long a chassis can sit at working height without loading the seals. That difference shapes every car lift automotive choice we make with you, from column style to arm geometry. If you are pulling the entire front suspension out from underneath a 1968 muscle car to media-blast the K-member, you need low-pad arms that clear stripped rocker panels and columns spaced wide enough to open the doors without smacking sheet metal.

The mistake we see most often in southwest Iowa is a shop owner who bought a symmetric two-post because it was on sale, then discovered the arms will not reach a wheelbase-varied fleet of project cars. Symmetric layouts push heavier vehicles rearward. Asymmetric columns rotate 30 degrees and let you open the door once the vehicle is up. For restoration work, asymmetric wins almost every time. We spec the lift after we understand what rolls through your door, not before, because a good decision tree starts with the vehicle mix.

Sequencing the garage build-out around the car lift automotive install

Every restoration shop we work with sequences the same way: floor first, electrical second, air lines third, lift fourth, and finish work last. Skipping steps costs money. Pouring a slab, then discovering it is too thin for the anchor pull-out spec on a 10,000 lb two-post, means either coring out and pouring a pad or downsizing the lift. Both cost more than getting it right on day one. A proper car lift automotive install wants at least four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10K two-post, and we recommend six inches for a 15K asymmetric if you plan to lift dually pickups or heavy modern SUVs during customer overflow work.

Electrical usually comes next. Most restoration shops in southwest Iowa run single-phase 220V because that is what rural service drops carry. That works for every home and small commercial lift we sell. Air lines get roughed in before the lift lands because you will run drops from the ceiling near each bay. Then the lift arrives, gets set, and finish work such as LED overhead lighting, painted floor, and tool boards happens around it. Do those last so nothing gets damaged during the install. Ceiling height, floor thickness, and the specs nobody warns you about

Overall lift height is the trap. Every restoration shop owner measures their ceiling and assumes any lift with a lower spec fits. Then the lift arrives and the overhead hydraulic hose loop clears the ceiling by half an inch, leaving no room to hang a shop light. We recommend at least 12 inches of clearance between the top of the lift columns and any fixed obstruction such as trusses, HVAC ducts, or radiant tube heaters. A 13 foot ceiling comfortably takes any two-post we sell. A 12 foot ceiling limits you to specific low-ceiling models, and a car lift automotive spec sheet will show adjusted column heights for those cases.

Floor thickness matters as much as ceiling height. Anchor pull-out is what kills a lift certification. We test slabs when we can. If the concrete is questionable, whether cracked, thin, or poured on fill without rebar, we tell you before we sell. A 20 foot span of six-inch pad at 3,500 PSI is our comfort zone for 10K to 15K commercial lifts. If your slab is older and unknown, we can core-sample or you can pour a fresh isolated pad in the bay area. Restoration work does not need a Formula 1 garage, but it does need a slab that will not delaminate when a 6,000 lb steel-body pickup goes up.

The suspension work that changes your lift choice

Suspension and shock replacement drives more restoration lift decisions than any other single job. Full-body-on-frame projects need the wheels hanging free, which means a two-post with the vehicle lifted at the pinch welds. The arms carry the frame while the wheels dangle. Unibody restoration work is the same. If you are pulling upper control arms, replacing shock towers, or working coilovers, you cannot use a four-post because the wheels sit on the runways. That is why nearly every restoration shop we equip picks a two-post as the primary car lift automotive setup and adds a four-post only if long-term storage is part of the business model.

Reach and rotation matter for suspension jobs. A restoration project car might sit on the lift for weeks between phases. The arms need to lock, the pads need to seat solid against factory jack points, and the safety locks need to engage at multiple heights so the vehicle rests on mechanical stops, not hydraulic pressure. We walk owners through pad kits and adapter options that keep the vehicle level even when suspension is fully unbolted. Cheap adapters chip factory pinch welds. Good adapters spread load and preserve the metal, and restoration owners care about that detail because a bent pinch weld shows up in the finished paint.

Decision tree: budget under $6K, $6-10K, and $10K plus

Here is the decision tree we walk restoration owners through. Under $6,000, we send you to a solid entry two-post from a home-shop brand such as BendPak or Atlas, 9,000 to 10,000 lb capacity, single-phase, adequate for classic muscle cars, small imports, and light trucks. Not adequate for a modern half-ton or a body-on-frame three-quarter ton project. Between $6,000 and $10,000, you move up to a Rotary or Challenger commercial two-post, still single-phase, with better arm restraints, longer warranty, and higher duty cycle. This is where most southwest Iowa restoration shops land for their primary car lift automotive investment.

Above $10,000 you are into higher-capacity 15K asymmetric or a two-lift setup that runs a two-post plus a four-post for long-term storage of finished vehicles. The decision tree is not just about price. It is about what you plan to lift. A restoration shop that only touches pre-1975 cars can live on a 9K lift forever. A shop that takes in modern collision-adjacent restoration or heavy classic trucks needs 12K or 15K minimum. Buy for the biggest thing you will lift in the next five years, not the one sitting in the bay today. Undersized lifts get replaced.

Three-phase vs single-phase in a restoration bay

Almost every restoration shop we equip runs single-phase 220V for their car lift automotive install. Three-phase is only worth it if you already have it or you are running heavy commercial equipment such as a big rotary screw compressor, industrial welders, or multiple lifts simultaneously. For a two-lift restoration bay, single-phase is plenty. Lift power hunger is a myth. A modern two-post pulls maybe 20 amps under load for the 45 seconds it takes to reach full height. The rest of the time it draws nothing. Sizing electrical for the lift rarely stresses the panel.

What does stress the panel is running the lift, the compressor, a MIG welder, and shop lighting off the same subpanel. If your shop is on a 100-amp service, we recommend upgrading to 200-amp before you add the lift. If you are already at 200-amp, you are fine for a two-lift restoration shop. Three-phase becomes worth it if you scale to a five-bay commercial shop with rolling jacks, an alignment machine, and a paint booth all pulling at once. Very few southwest Iowa restoration shops ever hit that scale, so we usually steer owners toward single-phase and put the three-phase upgrade money into a better lift or a finished floor.

Why we sequence rolling jacks and alignment last

Rolling jacks and alignment plates are the last things we add. They are accessories, not core lift decisions. A restoration shop with a solid two-post and a four-post can add rolling jacks to the four-post later if the work moves toward suspension services or wheel-off work on stored vehicles. Alignment plates only matter if you are doing customer alignment as a service, and most restoration shops send alignment out because the frequency does not justify the equipment or the training. Sequencing accessories last also gives the owner time to see how the shop actually flows before spending on tools that might sit unused for months at a time.

The same logic applies to tire changers, balancers, and lift-mounted air lines. Buy them when the work demands them, not because the catalog looks impressive. A restoration shop where 90 percent of the work is metal, paint, and driveline does not need a $10,000 alignment machine.
