Check One: Slab Age and Original Purpose
Start with the age of the slab and what it was built for. A home garage slab poured after 2005 to modern residential code is typically four inches of 3,000 PSI, which is the bare minimum for a 9,000 pound two-post home lift. A slab poured before 1990 could be anything from three inches unreinforced to five inches with fiber, and there is no way to know without checking. Check Two: Slab Thickness Measurement
The measurement itself is a small core drilled at the proposed anchor location, or a rebar-locator sweep that gives depth and rebar spacing without breaking the surface. Four inches of 3,000 PSI is the minimum for a 9K two-post; four-and-a-quarter for a 10K; four-and-a-half for anything 12K or heavier. If the slab reads three-and-a-half inches, the honest answer is that the car lift automotive package needs a saw-cut and re-pour before install, not a shim job at the base plate.
We have seen home garages in Ankeny where the previous owner poured a decorative overlay on top of an old original slab, and the total thickness looked fine but the bond line was a weak point at the anchor depth. Check Three: Rebar and Reinforcement

The 110V option on some four-post lifts is real but slow, and for a hobbyist doing transmission work the cycle time on 110V will annoy you every weekend. Check Six: Delivery Access and Uncrating Space
The last practical check is delivery access. A home garage with a single-car door and a short driveway is a tight delivery, and the pallet has to fit through the door. We book residential delivery with a liftgate for every home install, and we bring a pallet jack on our install truck to move the crate into the garage. If the driveway is narrow or the door is under seven feet wide, we plan the delivery differently.
