Measure your ceiling before you shop for a car lift automotive setup
Every home garage lift conversation starts at the ceiling. Not because it is exciting, but because it kills more purchases than any other spec. Slab thickness and age matter more than square footage
The next kill-shot is your slab. Two-post lifts anchor into concrete with wedge anchors that pull real load in tension every cycle. Slabs older than 30 years are often fine but sometimes fatigued at the aggregate. We always ask when the garage was poured. If you have expansion joints running through the anchor pattern, you may need to relocate the lift or add a supplemental pad.
Testing slab thickness is easier than it sounds. Drill a small hole in an inconspicuous spot with a masonry bit and measure the powder depth against the hole depth. Anything under four inches, you have a decision to make: cut and repour a proper pad (a weekend of concrete work), or step down to a 4-post lift that spreads its load across a wider footprint on standard slab. Panel amperage and the 240V question
Two-post home lifts run on 220V or 240V single-phase, drawing roughly 20 to 30 amps at load. The lift columns take up floor space, but the arms take up swing space. Two-post arms swing out to receive the vehicle, then swing in under the frame. That swing arc can bump into your garage door track, a workbench, or the side wall if you did not plan for it. We tell every home buyer to put the two-post arm layout in blue tape on the floor before signing the order. Walk the arm swing in both directions and confirm nothing hits.
Garage door height is a separate check. The lift itself needs the ceiling clearance we talked about, but you also need to be able to drive your vehicle in under the raised door with the arms rotated out of the way. A 7-foot garage door will not clear the raised hood of a truck. An 8-foot door will. Two-post, four-post, or scissor: matching lift type to seasonal storage

A two-post gives you better work-under access, full swing of the doors, direct access to brakes and drivetrain, but it is a working lift, not a storage lift. Scissor and mid-rise lifts are the third option for tight garages.
