Ceiling Height Is the Number That Kills Most Deals

Every car lift automotive shopper wants to know the rise height, but the number that actually decides the deal is your ceiling. A standard two-post asymmetric needs about 11 feet 6 inches to fully raise a mid-size sedan and give you room to walk under it. Overhead-style two-posts with the crossbar and hose management up top typically need 12 feet clear. Floorplate models fit under a 10-foot ceiling but you sacrifice full rise and introduce a floor bar that a rolling toolbox has to negotiate.

In our experience with Urbandale ranch-style garages built in the 1970s and 1980s, the ceiling clocks in right at 8 feet, which puts homeowners into scissor lift, mid-rise, or four-post home-storage territory instead of a true two-post. That is not a downgrade for brake work, but it changes the shopping list. Newer builds in northern Urbandale trending toward 10 or 11 feet can support more options. Do not assume, measure. Electrical: Panel, Breaker, and Circuit

Most car lift automotive equipment sold to home shops runs on 220V single-phase power. That means a 30-amp dedicated circuit off your main panel, with 10-gauge wire pulled to a proper receptacle or hardwired to a disconnect near the lift power unit. If your house has 100-amp service with the AC, dryer, and water heater already pulling from it, you may not have headroom for a new lift circuit. A quick check: add up the breaker amps for the major appliances, and if you are close to the panel rating, you need a subpanel or a service upgrade before the lift arrives.

Iowa electrical inspectors in Polk and Dallas counties generally want a permit for a new 220V circuit, and the inspection is easy to pass with a licensed electrician doing the pull. We do not do the electrical ourselves. We tell every Urbandale customer to have a sparky put in the circuit before the lift shows up, so on install day we are landing the power unit into a live outlet instead of waiting on a callback. Four-posts are more forgiving on marginal slabs because the load spreads across four points. Two-posts are cheaper for the same lift capacity but demand more of the concrete. Access, Doors, and Delivery Day

A crated two-post ships in around 1,600 pounds on a pallet about seven feet tall and three feet wide. That pallet goes on a lift-gate truck if your garage sits at street level, or on a standard freight truck if the driver can back into the driveway. In older Urbandale neighborhoods with narrow streets and mature trees, the driver sometimes cannot get within 30 feet of your garage. That is where a garage-side driveway pays off, and it is worth asking your neighbor to move a car for delivery day.
