Column height, overall height, and maximum lift height explained

The three numbers a Des Moines metro garage owner should have memorized before comparing lifts are column height, overall height, and maximum lift height. Column height is the physical top of the column itself. Overall height is the top of the crossbar or top-most component including the equalization tray. Maximum lift height is the vertical distance from slab to the top of the swing-arm pad at full raise. All three are different, and misreading them is the number-one measurement mistake we see in the market.

A typical commercial two-post lift has a column height around 111 to 113 inches, an overall height around 145 to 148 inches for overhead-crossbar models, and a maximum lift height of around 72 to 78 inches to the pad top. For engine oil pan gasket work, the maximum lift height matters most, because you want the pan at a comfortable working height. A car lift automotive setup with a 72-inch max lift is workable but tight for a taller mechanic; a 78-inch max is more comfortable across the crew. Read the manufacturer spec sheet by the exact numbers, not by the marketing brochure. Column spacing and drive-through width

Column spacing on a two-post lift is measured inside-to-inside, and it varies from about 95 inches on a narrower asymmetric to 125 inches on a wide symmetric. Pad height range with standard extensions runs from about 3.75 inches at the low end to 6 inches with stackers, and further with taller pad kits. A car lift automotive setup for a general engine-work shop should have enough arm reach to hit the jack points on a long-wheelbase van from the front position, and enough collapse to fit a compact sedan without arm interference. We spec arm sets based on the specific vehicle mix, and we recommend keeping a pad extension kit on hand for the occasional oddball. It saves fifteen minutes on every job that needs a shim.

Load capacity, cylinder specs, and hydraulic system details

Rated capacity on a two-post lift is the total load the lift is designed to raise, distributed across the four arms. A 10K lift is rated for a 10,000 pound vehicle with the load distributed properly across the pads – not for a 10,000 pound point load on a single arm. The hydraulic cylinders on a commercial two-post are typically 2.5 to 3 inches in bore diameter with strokes matched to the maximum lift height. Working pressure runs in the low thousands of PSI depending on the model.

What a Des Moines metro third-generation garage owner should know technically is that cylinder replacement is not a routine service item – a properly maintained commercial two-post cylinder should last the life of the lift. Seals are a service item and can be rebuilt in place. Hoses are a service item on a defined schedule. Power units are typically two or three horsepower and are field-replaceable if needed. The recertification cost – meaning the cable replacement, hydraulic hose set, seal rebuild, and ALI paperwork – typically runs a decent additional line item. Freight and install are the same regardless of used or new.

Add those together and compare to new. In most cases, the total for used-plus-recertification comes in below new but not dramatically so. The gap has to be large enough to compensate for the unknown ownership history, the shorter remaining service life, and the lack of a full manufacturer warranty. When the gap is small – within, say, twenty percent – new is almost always the better call. When the gap is large and the paperwork is complete, used can make sense. Anchor engineering and slab tolerance

The anchor engineering on a commercial two-post lift is one of the most under-appreciated details. The anchors are wedge-style bolts sized for the specific slab depth, typically 3/4 inch diameter with an embedment depth of 5 to 6 inches into 3,000 PSI or better concrete. The torque spec is published in the manual and must be verified with a calibrated torque wrench at install and re-checked at 30 days and annually.

Slab tolerance for a car lift automotive install is 4-inch minimum thickness at 3,000 PSI, with 6-inch preferred and 4,000 PSI or better in a heavy-duty application. A Des Moines metro garage with a slab of unknown age and unknown mix should have the concrete core-drilled before committing. We do that survey as part of every install, and we quote a supplemental anchor pad or a repour if the slab does not meet spec. Skipping this step is how lifts fail their first year of hard service, and the cost of the survey is trivial compared to the cost of an anchor failure.
