A car lift bay layout for an Urbandale RV and trailer service shop doing alignment work has to solve for long wheelbases, heavy tongue weights, and enough overhead clearance to fit tall coach bodies. When an Urbandale shop owner called us last spring about adding an alignment bay to a building originally framed for trailer repair, we walked the site, spec-ed a four-post alignment configuration, and installed it that summer. This piece is the first-year ownership story from install day through year one, written from the notes we took on service calls and follow-up visits. Site Walk-Through and Original Bay Layout
The first visit to the shop was in early April. The building was a 60 by 40 metal-frame structure originally set up as a trailer repair operation, with two roll-up doors on the long side and a shared office at the back. Ceiling clear height under the trusses was a comfortable 14 feet, side walls at 16, plenty for any RV or coach that could roll in through the doors. The floor was reinforced 3,500 PSI concrete at five inches thick, poured for heavy trailer axle loads. That was more than adequate for a four-post alignment car lift and left room for future expansion.
Existing bay layout had two open service positions with air lines dropped from the ceiling and a rolling tool crib against the back wall. The owner wanted to convert one of those positions into a dedicated alignment bay while keeping the other open for tongue-weight and axle work on trailers. That configuration is common in RV shops because alignment and trailer service actually complement each other well, both need long open floor space and both benefit from a lift that handles long wheelbases. We took measurements, photographed the panel, and left with a quote in draft.
Choosing the Right Four-Post Configuration for Alignment
Alignment work on a car lift wants a four-post with rear slip plates and front turn plates built into the runways. That geometry lets the tech loosen tie rods, spin the front wheels through their alignment sweep, and read camber and toe without the vehicle jumping laterally. For an RV shop doing alignment on Class A and Class C motorhomes plus fifth-wheel tow vehicles, we spec-ed a heavy-duty commercial four-post with 18,000 lb capacity and extended-length runways. Standard runways are about 14 feet long, extended run 20 to 22 feet, and long-wheelbase RVs need every inch.
The other alignment decision was rolling jacks. A four-post car lift by itself holds the vehicle on its wheels, which is perfect for alignment but wrong for tire and brake work. Adding a pair of rolling jacks that ride on the top of the runways gives the tech the option to lift the wheels free when the vehicle needs tire rotation or wheel-bearing service in the same session. The owner ordered two rolling jacks with the initial package and confirmed later that it was the right call, roughly a third of alignment appointments end up needing a wheel-off follow-up.
Install Day and First-Week Break-In
Install day landed in mid-June. Our two-person crew arrived at 7 a.m., uncrated the four columns and runways in the parking lot, and had the lift standing and anchored by early afternoon. Electrical had been roughed in the previous week by a local electrician, a dedicated 220-volt 20-amp circuit landed within eight feet of the driver-side column. Hydraulic lines got plumbed, the power unit mounted, and initial fluid fill happened around 3 p.m. Certification test at 4:30, and we handed over signed ANSI paperwork by 5.
First-week break-in is the same for every four-post car lift. Cycle the lift up and down empty for the first 10 cycles to let the hydraulic system self-purge air. Then load a mid-weight vehicle and cycle another 10 times, watching for cable stretch on the four corner cables. Cables always stretch a small amount in the first 100 cycles as the strands seat into their sheaves. We came back at the end of week one to check cable tension, torque anchors, and adjust the runways for level. Everything was in spec and the shop started billing alignment work the next Monday.
Workflow Adjustments in the First Month
The shop’s alignment workflow needed a few small adjustments in the first month. Techs used to bay repair on shorter trailers and were not used to the reach of the long runways, they kept parking vehicles too far forward and having to reposition on the lift. We coached the lead tech to mark the runway with a piece of high-visibility tape at the front-tire-center position for the most common vehicles, F-350 dually, Sprinter chassis, and short Class C. That single change cut the average setup time by roughly two minutes per vehicle.
The second adjustment was rolling jack storage. When the jacks are not in use they roll off the runway and sit against a wall. The initial spot was in the customer-walk path, which was annoying for both staff and customers. We moved them to a corner behind the office wall, out of sight but accessible in about 15 seconds. Small workflow items add up over hundreds of tickets a year. If you are laying out a new car lift bay, spend an afternoon walking the tech workflow before you paint any floor markings, small placement decisions have long lifespans.
First Real Service Call: A Cable Tension Adjustment
Month three brought the first real service call. The lift was raising slightly unevenly, one corner about a half inch high compared to the other three. On a four-post that symptom is almost always cable stretch on one of the four lifting cables, and the fix is a tension adjustment at the top of the affected column. We sent a tech out within 24 hours, adjusted the equalizer, and the lift was back to level in about 20 minutes. Total downtime was less than a business day. The shop kept running on the other bay in the meantime.
That was the only real service event in the first year. Everything else was routine, monthly walk-arounds by the shop’s own tech, a quarterly cable inspection we walked them through over the phone, and one visit to add hydraulic fluid to the power unit. The lift itself never gave any trouble beyond that one cable seating event, which is exactly what a well-installed commercial four-post car lift should do. Boring is the goal, drama is expensive. Fifty weeks a year of no service calls is what you are paying the installer for up front.
Revenue Impact and Alignment Volume by Month Six
By month six the shop was averaging six to eight alignment tickets per week, mostly on RV tow vehicles and Sprinter-chassis camper vans. That volume alone paid the monthly financing note with room to spare. Alignment margin on a specialty vehicle is significantly higher than on a passenger sedan because most competitor shops in the Des Moines metro will not touch a Class A or a long-wheelbase Class C. Owning the lift that fits those vehicles was a real competitive advantage. Word spread through the local RV owner network faster than expected.
The follow-on services came with it, tire rotations, wheel-bearing services, and full inspection work on the same vehicles that came in for alignment. Adding the alignment car lift did not just add alignment revenue, it added an entirely new customer segment that now uses the shop for general RV service too. That kind of second-order effect is why we push shop owners to think about lift purchases as capability investments, not just as equipment line items. The lift changes what work you can bid on, and that changes the whole business.
Year-End Review and What We Would Do Differently
At the year-end review the owner and I sat down with the service log and looked at what we would change. First item, extended runways were the right call, do not go shorter on a shop that touches RVs. Second, the two rolling jacks were absolutely necessary, and adding a third jack would have been overkill. Third, a dedicated air line drop above the front turn plates would have saved the tech time chasing an air hose across the floor. That is a small retrofit and one we scheduled for the second-year visit.
