Car Lift Brand History: A Safety Walkthrough for Urbandale Shops

A tire-and-alignment shop owner in Urbandale asked us this spring which car lift brand he should trust for the next 20 years of daily maintenance work, and how much of that decision came down to safety instead of price. He had been quoted three different brands from three different sellers and none of them had walked him through the parts pipeline or the real safety history behind the name on the column. That is the walkthrough we did with him and the walkthrough we do with every production shop that calls us. Rotary and the long parts pipeline

Rotary Lift, founded in 1925 in Memphis and now built in Madison, Indiana, invented the modern hydraulic vehicle lift. That is not marketing; the SPO series and its predecessors define the two-post format most other brands imitate. From a safety standpoint that history matters because Rotary has been tested against every version of the ANSI/ALI standard since the standard existed, and the parts pipeline reaches back three decades. We routinely ship replacement parts for a 1998 SPO9 to a shop that has never called us before.

For an Urbandale tire shop doing 15 to 25 vehicles a day, that parts pipeline is the difference between a Friday afternoon repair and a Monday morning callback. A car lift that cannot be repaired in 24 hours costs more per year than the machine itself. Challenger Lifts, based in Louisville, Kentucky, has been in the automotive lift business since the 1980s and shares parts DNA with several other production lifts under the Snap-on umbrella. The CL10 versymmetric two-post is arguably the most-installed 10,000 pound production lift in the Midwest, and we stock it because it holds up to daily tire and alignment work without complaint.

Challenger’s safety story is quieter but every bit as strong as Rotary’s. All current-production Challenger commercial two-post lifts are ALI Gold certified, and the arm-restraint geometry engages automatically as soon as the pad meets the vehicle. If you want the exact production feel of a Rotary for a slightly friendlier price, Challenger is the honest cross-shop. We install roughly equal numbers of both brands across the Des Moines metro.

BendPak and where it fits

BendPak, out of Southern California, sells more lifts to home shops and small independents than any other brand. Its history is shorter than Rotary or Challenger, but its ALI Gold listings on the home-garage side are solid and the four-post storage line is a legitimate choice for a home builder. What we do not recommend BendPak for is high-production commercial daily service. That is not a knock, it is a fit statement.

An Urbandale tire shop cycling a lift 25 times a day wants a Rotary or a Challenger. A homeowner cycling twice a week wants a BendPak or an Atlas. Sizing the brand to the duty cycle is one of the least-taught pieces of the buy decision, and it is why a car lift bought on price alone often ends up misaligned with the shop it lives in.

What ALI Gold changes in a production bay

ALI Gold certification is the third-party structural and fatigue certification we described in a separate article, but its production-bay implication is worth repeating. Only ALI Gold certified lifts have the annual audit trail that a workers’ compensation carrier is going to ask about after a claim. If the lift on your floor is not Gold-listed, your carrier can push back on the coverage.

Ask the installer to email you the ALI listing page for the exact model and serial on your order. Rotary and Challenger will both produce that document within a day. If a supplier cannot or will not, walk away. That single filter eliminates about half the questionable imports on the market and it is the fastest way to protect a production shop.

Arm restraints, safety cams, and the daily habits

Every ALI Gold two-post lift has automatic arm restraints and a mechanical safety-cam ladder inside each column. The habits that keep a car lift safe day after day are simple but easy to skip. Set the pads first, raise the vehicle six inches, shake the vehicle at the bumper to confirm the pads are seated, then raise to the working height and drop the lift onto the safety cams. If a tech is not doing all four steps every time, retrain.

The single most common accident we investigate is a vehicle walking off a pad that was never fully seated. It is not the lift’s fault, but it is the technician’s habit that catches it. Rotary and Challenger both publish daily inspection cards that live inside the electrical cabinet. Use them.

Parts availability across brands and years

Rotary and Challenger both maintain parts availability on lifts going back 20 to 30 years. We stock the common wear parts for the current-production models in our Iowa warehouse and can source anything not on the shelf within 24 to 48 hours from the factory. Off-brand imports often fail this test at year 7 or 8 when the original distributor closes and the parts pipeline goes dark.

Ask us for the parts availability window on the exact model you are considering before you sign the order. That single question tells you what the machine is worth to own long-term. A cheap car lift that goes dark in year 8 costs far more than a Rotary or Challenger that runs 25 years on the original columns.

What we recommend for an Urbandale tire and alignment shop
