Buying your first car lift for a home garage is one of those purchases that sits in the browser tabs for months. You’ve watched YouTube videos, you’ve read Reddit threads, you’ve priced options on three different websites, and you’re still not sure whether you need a two-post or a four-post, 9,000 lb or 10,000 lb, symmetric or asymmetric. A first-time buyer in the Quad Cities called us last spring in exactly that state, and we walked him through the buyer’s guide we use for every hobbyist. This article is that guide, adapted for home-garage owners in Iowa doing weekend tire rotations, oil changes, and light wheel work.

Step 1 – Measure Your Garage Before Anything Else
Before you look at a single product page, measure your garage. Ceiling height (finished floor to lowest obstruction – truss chord, HVAC duct, garage door tracks, light fixtures), floor length, floor width, and slab thickness if you can determine it. Every one of those numbers gates which car lift you can install. A 2-car home garage with 10-foot ceilings and a 4-inch slab is a different shopping list than a 3-car garage with 12-foot ceilings and a 5-inch slab.
Our Quad Cities customer had a 22 x 24 foot two-car garage with 9-foot 8-inch ceilings – a common but tight configuration. That ruled out any two-post with 10-foot-plus overall height. It also ruled out a four-post with drive-on ramps because clearance to raise a full-size SUV would leave the tires within 6 inches of the ceiling. We ended up with a low-profile mid-rise scissor lift that gave him 4 feet of lift and fit comfortably in the space. That is a real decision path: measure first, then shop, and be willing to change your default choice if the space demands it. Most home-garage disappointments trace back to skipping the measurement step and ordering the wrong lift for the space. Don’t be that owner.
Step 2 – Match the Lift to Your Actual Use
The second question is what you’ll actually do with the lift. Home-garage owners typically fall into three categories: (1) tire rotations, oil changes, and light service; (2) heavier suspension, brake, and drivetrain work on multiple vehicles; (3) car storage – parking one car above another to reclaim floor space. Each category has a different best-fit car lift.
Category 1 owners like our Quad Cities customer are best served by a mid-rise scissor or a compact two-post. Both handle tire rotation and oil change cleanly, and both fit in a standard two-car garage. Category 2 owners need a full-height two-post to reach true underbody working height, which requires a taller garage or a compromise on max lift. Category 3 owners need a four-post storage lift with an 8-foot lower vehicle clearance, and that means 12-foot or taller ceilings for practical use. Match the lift to what you actually do, not what you might do someday. Someday rarely happens, and buying for it costs money you’ll never see back. Our Quad Cities customer specifically ruled out storage – he already had a 2-car garage full of daily drivers and had no interest in stacking. That decision made the scissor an obvious pick.
Step 3 – Set Your Realistic Budget
A quality home-garage car lift ranges from mid-single-digit thousands for a good mid-rise scissor up to slightly higher for a full-featured 9,000 lb two-post from a mainstream brand like BendPak or Atlas. Add installation (a few hundred to a couple thousand depending on complexity), electrical work if you need a new 220v circuit, and any garage upgrades (concrete inspection or reinforcement occasionally). All-in for a typical Quad Cities home garage install: mid-to-upper single-digit thousands.
Budget realistically – not just for the lift, but for the ecosystem around it. A lift with no compatible jack stands, no arm adapters, and no service tools is a lift you’ll under-use. Plan for another few hundred in accessories over the first year: a low-profile transmission jack, a quality torque wrench, additional lift-point adapters, and probably a set of jack stands for backup safety. Our Quad Cities customer’s all-in cost, including scissor lift, install, and accessories, came in well within his target. He’s been running weekly tire rotations, oil changes, and brake service on two family vehicles for the last 18 months without a single issue. That’s the return on realistic budgeting – no surprises, no regrets, and no unused equipment sitting in a corner of the garage.
Step 4 – Two-Post vs Four-Post vs Scissor: Choosing Your Car Lift
For home garages, the three real options are two-post, four-post, and mid-rise scissor. Two-posts give the best underbody access and take the smallest footprint but require anchoring into good concrete and enough ceiling. Four-posts don’t need anchoring, work on lower-quality slabs, and store cars nicely, but require more floor space and taller ceilings. Scissors sit in the middle: low ceiling requirement, small footprint, decent lift height, no anchoring on some models, but limited underbody access.
For tire rotation and wheel work specifically – our Quad Cities customer’s main use – a scissor or a mid-rise scissor is often the best answer. Drive on, lift 3 to 4 feet, work at knee height, drop, drive off. No arm placement, no anchor concerns, no ceiling issue. A two-post car lift adds versatility if you also do brake or exhaust work, but at the cost of ceiling requirement and anchor prep. A four-post is overkill for pure tire work unless you also want the storage benefit. Match the lift type to your dominant use case, and don’t buy versatility you won’t use. Our Quad Cities customer has zero regrets about the scissor 18 months in. If his usage had included frequent brake or exhaust work, we would have steered him differently.
Step 5 – Understand Concrete and Anchoring
If you’re leaning toward a two-post car lift, concrete becomes non-negotiable. Every two-post requires a minimum slab thickness (typically 4 inches for a 9,000 lb lift, more for higher capacity) and a minimum concrete strength (3,000 PSI is the industry standard). We can do a slab evaluation in the Quad Cities area for a nominal charge – Schmidt hammer test at four points, visual inspection of any cracks or expansion joints near the planned anchor location, and a documented recommendation. Cost is much less than the cost of a failed anchor. If your slab fails the test, options are limited but exist: reinforced pad pours (cutting out the anchor zone and re-pouring with proper thickness and rebar) run into the low four figures in Iowa. Or you can pivot to a four-post or scissor design that doesn’t require anchoring. Our Quad Cities customer’s slab was solid – 4.5-inch pour from 1998 with visible rebar in the perimeter cuts, no cracks near the planned anchor zone. Slab quality is one more measurement to make before you shop.
Step 6 – Install It Yourself or Hire a Pro
Home-garage lifts can be self-installed by a mechanically-inclined owner with a couple of friends and a full weekend. We ship every product with detailed instructions and phone support. That said, most first-time buyers hire the install out, and here’s why: setting a two-post plumb and safe requires a rotary hammer drill, a torque wrench rated for 150 ft-lb, hydraulic bleeder tools, a level, and about 8 hours of work. If you own the tools and have the time, DIY saves a fair bit. If you don’t, hiring a professional is often the better math.
Our Quad Cities customer chose professional install for a specific reason: he wanted to be able to file a warranty claim if anything ever went wrong, and some manufacturers void warranties on DIY installs. That was the tipping factor for him – pay a modest install premium up front and keep the warranty intact for the life of the lift. We think that’s the right call for most first-time buyers unless you’re an experienced DIY builder who has installed heavy equipment before. The car lift is one of those purchases where the install quality shows up over 20 years. Get it right on day one, or spend the next decade re-torquing anchors and second-guessing whether the plumb is off.
Step 7 – Post-Install Habits That Extend Life
Once your car lift is installed, three habits will extend its life from 10 years to 25+ years: (1) cycle it fully at least once a month even if you’re not using it (this keeps seals moving and prevents dry-side issues where hydraulic oil settles away from the seal face); (2) inspect cables and hoses visually every three months and address anything that looks worn; (3) get an ALI-certified annual inspection or, at minimum, a professional check every 24 months. Home lifts don’t need the yearly compliance inspection that shops require, but they benefit from the same discipline.
