A collector in Waterloo bought a four-post car lift from us last year to store two show cars and one daily driver in a heated shop, with the storage bay doubling as a suspension and shock replacement bay when a project car came in for work. He asked us at the one-year mark to come out and do a full inspection with a focus on the cables and sheaves, since those are the wear items that matter most on a four-post used for storage and light service. This is that story — install to first inspection — and what we would tell any collector considering the same setup for a first-year ownership arc.

The Waterloo Collector’s First Car Lift Decision
He was choosing between a heavy-capacity storage four-post and a mid-range four-post with rolling jacks. Both fit the shop. The heavy-capacity model added weight to the columns and a wider base plate, but he was never going to store a truck that heavy. The mid-range four-post rated at nine thousand pounds gave him the ceiling to store any show car in the collection with room to spare. We went with the nine-thousand-pound rating and specified the aluminum rolling jacks that let him do wheel-off suspension work when he wanted to.
The other choice was extended runways versus standard. Standard runways fit a normal sedan or coupe. Extended runways fit a Suburban or a longer classic. He picked extended because one of the collection pieces is a full-size classic wagon, and the extra length gave him ramp clearance and rear tire clearance for wheel-off work. Both decisions turned out right at the one-year mark and neither one has us second-guessing today.
Why Cable Inspection Matters on Any Car Lift
A four-post car lift uses four cables running through sheaves at each column to equalize post height as the lift raises and lowers. If one cable stretches, sags, or breaks, the runway will not stay level — and while the mechanical safety latches will catch a runaway on the way down, a car on a slanted deck is a real problem. Cable inspection is what prevents that. It is not optional and it is not a nice-to-have.
Every cable on a car lift should be checked visually at every service, and inspected in detail — sheave by sheave, end fitting by end fitting — at least annually. Under commercial use we tighten that to every six months. For a residential collector who runs the lift up and down a few times a month, once a year is fine, as long as it is really done. A drive-by wave with a flashlight is not a cable inspection.
Month One: Install Day and Initial Cable Set
Install day for this Waterloo collector went in one shift. Concrete was six-inch reinforced, floor was level within an inch across the bay, and the ceiling was fifteen feet clean. We assembled the runways off to the side, walked the columns in, and set the sheaves. The cables came pre-run from the factory but had to be tensioned individually after the lift was standing. We use a torque-wrench-equivalent method — set one cable to spec, then chase the other three to level.
The first-run cycle is where hidden issues show up. We ran the lift empty three times, then set a two-thousand-pound test car and ran it three more times, then let it sit at full height for fifteen minutes and re-checked deck level. All four corners stayed within an eighth of an inch. That is the target on a fresh install of any car lift. Anything more than a quarter inch across the deck at full height is a cable-set problem, not a wear problem, and it gets addressed before the customer takes the keys.
Month Six: First Cable Check and What We Saw
The owner called at month six because one runway sounded a little louder than the other on descent. That is a common symptom — sometimes it means a sheave is turning dry, sometimes it means a cable has walked a hair out of position on a drum. We came out on a Saturday morning, took the covers off the columns, and inspected each cable end. Nothing was bent or frayed.
What we found was normal seating. The cables had settled about a sixteenth of an inch each after the initial break-in period. That is expected on a car lift in its first year. We re-tensioned to spec, re-checked deck level, and lubed the sheave bearings with the manufacturer-spec lithium grease. The extra noise went away and has stayed away since.
Rolling Jacks and Suspension Work on a Four-Post
Rolling jacks turn a four-post car lift from a storage rack into a real service lift. When the collector wants to pull a shock or do wheel bearings, he rolls the aluminum jacks into position under the frame, lifts the axle off the runway with the jack’s own hydraulic ram, and the wheel is free. That converts a storage lift into a partial two-post-style workstation for suspension work.
What you have to watch on rolling jacks is the pinch-weld puck condition and the ram descent rate. The jack rams have their own cylinders, own seals, and their own maintenance schedule. On the six-month visit we inspected both jacks, cycled each ram to check descent, and replaced one o-ring that was starting to weep. That is a small part that would have cost a lot more if it had failed in the middle of a shock replacement job.
Cable Replacement Intervals and Real-World Wear
Manufacturers publish cable replacement intervals in years and cycles. A typical car lift cable spec on a residential four-post is five years or a stated cycle count, whichever comes first. That is a conservative interval for a collector who runs the lift a few dozen times a year. For a commercial shop, we tighten that to three years or the cycle count. The wear item is not usually the cable body — it is the swaged end fitting at the drum and the sheave contact points.
What we look for at inspection is broken strands, kinks, corrosion, and daylight between the fitting swage and the cable. Any single broken strand within one lay length is a replacement trigger. Corrosion on the outer strands is also a replacement trigger, even if the strand count is intact. This collector’s cables at the one-year mark showed zero broken strands, zero kinks, and no visible corrosion. Another four years before we look hard at replacement.
Year One Summary and What We Would Change
At the end of the first year the owner had run the lift about forty cycles — mostly seasonal storage swaps and one full shock replacement job. The lift itself was clean, level, and quiet. The cables were within spec. The sheaves were lubed. The only two items that showed any change were the rolling jack o-ring we replaced at six months, and a slight settling of the concrete around one anchor that we re-torqued as a preventive measure.
Would we change anything? If we specified the same car lift again for this collector we would add the storage-lift jack tray from day one instead of month six.
