The first myth is that a car lift equalizer cable is a set-it-and-forget-it component that runs fine until it snaps. That is wrong and it is the myth that leads to the worst kind of hoist failure — a vehicle drop from height caused by a cable that showed weeks of warning signs no one was looking for. Cables are wear items with well-defined failure modes: individual strand breakage, corrosion, fraying at the end fittings, and elongation from cyclic load. Every one of those is visible on a routine inspection if the tech knows what to look for.

On a two-post overhead hoist, the equalizer cables synchronize the two column carriages so both sides rise and fall together. On a four-post drive-on, four cables at the corners synchronize the runway lift. A single broken cable in either configuration will cause the vehicle to tilt off-level, and the tilt can happen in milliseconds. That is why the ALI inspection standard calls for a monthly visual on all cables and an annual detailed inspection with a magnifying glass and a light. Any Urbandale European-marque shop that has not been doing those two inspections is running blind on the most critical wear item in the hoist.

Myth: You Only Need to Inspect Cables Annually

The second myth is that once-a-year cable inspection is enough. It is not. The ALI standard, which every ALI-certified car lift is designed to be operated under, calls for monthly visual inspections in addition to the annual detailed inspection. Monthly means running your eyes along every visible run of cable, at every sheave, and at every end fitting, looking for the specific wear indicators that predict failure. Why monthly? Because cable wear is not linear. Cables can look fine for years and then show a sudden acceleration in strand breakage over a few weeks as the wire fatigues at a specific point where the sheave contact is highest. A monthly walk-through catches that acceleration before it becomes a break. Annual-only inspection can miss six weeks of accelerating damage, and six weeks is more than enough time to fail. Check each sheave the cable runs over. Sheaves should rotate freely and show even wear across the groove. A sheave that is worn to a point or that has developed a groove deeper than half its original depth needs replacement, and running a new cable over an old sheave will destroy the new cable in months. Check the cable tension — both sides of an overhead two-post should carry equal load, and if one is markedly slacker than the other, the cable adjustment is off. Finally, check the end-fitting swage or clevis for any visible cracking or deformation. Fifteen minutes, done well, every month.

Wheel Bearing Work and the Cable Load Cycle

Wheel bearing service on European marques — particularly the German brands with pressed-in hub bearings that require a full knuckle disassembly — is a job that keeps the vehicle up on the hoist for two to four hours per side. During that time, the cables are under continuous static load. Static load hours count differently toward cable wear than raw cycle count, and a shop that does high-hour static-load jobs like wheel bearings should be inspecting cables monthly without exception.

The specific wear pattern that shows up on high-static-load shops is corrosion and fatigue at the sheave contact points. When the cable sits under load in the same position for hours at a time, the contact point between cable and sheave experiences concentrated stress. Over hundreds of long-duration jobs, that concentrated stress can accelerate strand fatigue at those specific points. Retensioning is a routine adjustment that takes about ten minutes per cable at the anchor end and restores the tension to spec. We retension cables at every service visit as part of the standard hoist checkup.

Replace the cable if any single lay length shows two or more broken strands, if any strand is broken within the fitting swage, if the cable is kinked or has a dead bend, if corrosion has pitted the wire beyond surface staining, or if the cable has stretched more than about three percent of its original length beyond its adjustment range. Replace both cables on a two-post at the same time even if only one shows the condition, because the second cable is the same age and the same use history. That is standard practice. Signs of Cable Wear Most Shops Miss

Beyond broken strands and corrosion, there are three cable-wear signs that most shops miss. That accelerates cable fatigue on an otherwise healthy-looking cable. Check groove depth at every monthly inspection. Second, cable diameter reduction — measure the cable diameter at multiple points along its length with a caliper. Any point measuring more than five percent below nominal diameter is a wear indicator.

Third, end-fitting rotation — the swaged end fitting should never rotate independently of the cable. If you can rotate the fitting on the cable, the swage has failed and the fitting will eventually pull off. That is a rare failure mode but a catastrophic one. Every monthly cable inspection on a car lift should include a quick check of end-fitting integrity by trying to rotate each fitting by hand. If it moves, that cable is out of service immediately. These three checks add maybe two minutes to the monthly inspection and they catch failures the average shop misses entirely.
