Every car lift drive on ships with a power unit — a small electric motor coupled to a hydraulic pump — and the power unit has a specific voltage and amperage requirement stamped on the label. Read it before you buy anything. Common configurations: 110V single-phase 20-amp for the smallest hobbyist lifts, 220V single-phase 20 to 30-amp for most home and light-commercial lifts, and 220V three-phase for larger commercial drive-ons. A lift shipped with a 220V power unit will not run on a 110V circuit no matter how much you wish it would.
The Ames mobile mechanic’s chosen lift was a 9,000 pound drive-on with a 220V single-phase 20-amp power unit. His garage panel had two open slots. He called an electrician, confirmed the panel could take a new 220V circuit, and priced the run to the wall behind where the lift would sit. Cost came in under three hundred dollars for a proper installation with a disconnect switch. That is the kind of number every car lift drive on buyer should have in hand before ordering — not after.
Single-Phase Versus Three-Phase Reality
Single-phase power is what almost every home and small commercial building in Iowa has. It is fine for drive-on lifts up through the 12,000 to 14,000 pound class. Three-phase power is more efficient and delivers smoother motor operation, but it is only available in industrial-zoned buildings or where the utility has run a specific service. Adding three-phase to a building that does not have it can cost thousands and requires utility coordination.

Not all lift models offer that — some are three-phase-only for their larger capacities. Wire Gauge, Breaker Size, and Distance from Panel

Longer runs — over about 50 feet — bump up to 10-gauge to keep voltage drop under 3 percent. Voltage drop matters because it starves the motor of the current it needs during high-load moments, like the initial start of a lift under maximum vehicle weight. A motor running on 210 volts instead of 220 pulls more amperage and can trip a breaker or wear out prematurely.
His run was about 35 feet, so 12-gauge was fine. Breaker sized to 20 amps as spec’d. Disconnect switch at the wall, per code, so the lift can be locked out for service. He asked us whether he needed a GFCI breaker — the answer for most car lift drive on power units is no, because the motor and control circuits are designed for standard breakers. Some newer municipalities may require GFCI depending on garage code. Check your local code, but do not add GFCI arbitrarily on the assumption it is safer. It can nuisance-trip on motor start.
Grounding, Neutrals, and the Small Details That Kill Motors
A 220V circuit for a drive-on power unit uses two hot legs, a ground, and no neutral (for most single-phase power units — some do use a neutral for control circuitry, so read the wiring diagram). Grounding is critical. A poorly grounded motor can develop stray voltage on the frame that gives you a shock the first time you touch a metal column. His electrician verified continuity from the disconnect switch ground back to the panel ground bar before energizing.
Small detail that killed a motor for a customer years ago: the neutral and ground were bonded at the disconnect switch instead of only at the panel. That created a loop that stressed the motor windings on every start. Motor lasted maybe eight months before it burned out and we had to replace it under warranty (and the customer had to rewire the disconnect). Bond neutral to ground only at the main panel, never downstream. This is basic residential wiring but easy to get backwards on a hurried install.
