A Cedar Falls municipal fleet manager called us last spring about a car lift drive on for their vehicle restoration and metal-work bay. They had budget, they had the building, and they had the crew. What they did not have was a plan for the freight — how a 2,600 pound crate arrives on a semi, how you get it off the truck safely, and how you stage it inside the shop without hurting anybody. That is the part nobody puts in the sales pitch, and it is the part we spend the most time on with fleet buyers. Before the Truck Rolls: Confirming Delivery Specifications
The single most important pre-delivery step is nailing down what the freight carrier is actually going to do at your address. Fleet managers who are used to receiving vendor deliveries at a loading dock get burned here — a car lift drive on almost always ships from the manufacturer on a standard dry van, and standard dry vans do not have a loading dock at your building. The driver drops the freight where the wheels stop. If that is on a curb, that is where it stays.
We confirmed three things in writing before Cedar Falls scheduled their delivery. First, whether the truck was a straight truck with a lift-gate or a full 53-foot dry van (they got the 53-footer, which meant no gate). Second, whether the driver would help unload (no — drivers unload with pallet jacks only, and a crated lift does not roll off a pallet jack easily). Third, the arrival window. The fleet manager blocked off two crew members and their forklift for a four-hour window on delivery morning. That is what a real fleet delivery plan looks like. Do not schedule your car lift drive on delivery on a day where nobody has time to receive it.
What a Forklift Actually Needs to Do
Cedar Falls had a 6,000 pound rough-terrain forklift with 48-inch forks. That is comfortably adequate for a car lift drive on crate — you want at least 4,000 pounds of capacity and forks long enough to fully cradle the load. Shorter forks tip. Under-capacity forklifts can lift the crate off the truck but then buckle on the drive to the shop, and that is how somebody loses a foot. If your forklift is questionable, rent a bigger one for the day. It is a hundred and fifty dollars and it is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.
The unload sequence: pull the truck curbside, cut the ratchet straps on the crate, walk the forklift up level with the trailer bed, ease the forks under the crate’s center of gravity (marked on the side, usually a triangle stencil), lift about two inches to clear the trailer deck, back straight out until the load is fully clear, lower to about six inches off the ground, and drive slowly to the staging area. Do not turn sharply while carrying the load. Do not go over broken pavement. Do not let the crate sway. A car lift drive on crate is not fragile, but the wobble amplifies fast if you are moving.
Staging Inside the Shop — Where the Crate Actually Goes
Do not just drop the crate wherever there is space. Stage it as close to the final install location as you can, oriented with the columns pointed the direction they will stand. This saves you dragging 800-pound column pieces sideways across the shop floor later. Cedar Falls staged theirs three feet from the marked column positions with the crate’s long axis parallel to the runway direction. Ten minutes of forethought saved an hour of manhandling.
Once staged, break the crate down carefully. The top boards come off first, then the sides. Do not just pry with a wrecking bar — there are packing straps and small parts trays tacked to the inside walls, and you can crush a control box if you swing too hard. Pull the parts trays out first, inventory against the packing list on the crate top, then start pulling major components. The runways are the heaviest single pieces on a car lift drive on and they need two people plus mechanical assistance to move. Column pieces can be walked with a two-wheeler if you are careful.
Anchor Bolt Setup and Column Placement Safety
Cedar Falls’s install team hammer-drilled the anchor holes to spec — five-eighths inch bit for wedge anchors, three and a quarter inches deep, brushed and blown clean of dust before setting anchors. This is the step where people cut corners and then wonder why an anchor pulls under load six months later. If the hole is not clean, the anchor does not grip. Full stop.
Column placement is the next safety moment. Two-person lift, minimum, on each column. Get the column upright, hold it against the anchor pattern, drop the washers and nuts, and torque to the value in the manual (usually around 110 foot-pounds for five-eighths anchors in 3,500 PSI concrete). Do not let a column tip over unattended, even for thirty seconds. The 300-plus pound column will land on somebody’s foot or damage a runway. This is basic industrial safety, but it is easy to forget when you are excited about the new lift. Hydraulic and Cable Routing on the Deck
Once columns are anchored and runways are on top, you route the hydraulic line and the equalizer cables. Cable tension is critical. The runways on a car lift drive on stay level only because the cables lift both sides in sync — if one cable is slack, the runway tilts under load. Cedar Falls’s team used a torque wrench to tension the cable adjusters to the manual spec, then cycled the lift up and down empty three times and re-checked tension. It settled slightly on the first cycle, which is normal.
The hydraulic bleed is the other step nobody enjoys. You fill the reservoir, cycle the lift a few times without full load, and bleed air out of the cylinder either through the bleeder screw or by lowering under partial load. Air in the line makes the lift feel spongy and can cause uneven runway rise. Take twenty minutes to bleed it right the first time. If you skip this, you will be back under the lift chasing the problem in six months when the cylinder finally purges wrong on a bad day.
First Restoration Job on the New Deck
Two weeks after install, Cedar Falls started their first frame restoration on a retired pickup they were bringing back to service. Frame work asks a lot of a car lift drive on — you need long access underneath, stability against welding drag, and the ability to leave the vehicle up for days at a time as work progresses. All three are exactly what the drive-on delivers. They ran the truck up, engaged mechanical locks at all four columns, and started grinding rust off the frame rails on hour one.
One safety note the fleet manager added: they masked the hydraulic lines and cables with welding blankets before doing any torch or wire-feed work near them. Sparks landing on a hydraulic hose can pit the outer layer, and hot slag on a steel cable can create weak spots you cannot see. Ten minutes of blanket setup, zero regrets.
