Single-Phase Is Almost Always Enough for a Home Garage
Rural service in northeast Iowa is almost universally single-phase. Three-phase power exists but it is expensive to bring in from the road, and most farms, acreages, and small industrial parks in Bremer, Fayette, Winneshiek, and the surrounding counties get by fine on single-phase 200 amp service. Amperage, Breaker Size, and Wire Gauge for a Two-Post Car Lift
A typical residential car lift power unit pulls between 15 and 25 amps under full load on 220V. That means a 30-amp double-pole breaker fed by 10-gauge copper is the standard spec for the run, and it holds up whether your circuit distance is 20 feet or 60 feet. If you are running longer than 75 feet from the panel, bump the wire to 8-gauge to fight voltage drop. Voltage drop under load is the silent killer of hydraulic motors, and it is invisible until the pump starts humming instead of lifting.
We spec the receptacle as a NEMA 6-30R and pre-terminate lift cords accordingly. Do not use a 50-amp welder outlet as your lift outlet unless you also change the plug on the power unit and the branch breaker to match. Mismatched connectors are the number one reason we get callbacks on new installs. Follow the wiring diagram that ships with the lift, use the exact breaker size the manufacturer specifies, and label the panel clearly so the next electrician does not have to guess.
Where the Outlet Should Live for Your Car Lift Install
Location matters more than most first-time buyers expect. The power unit on a two-post lives on one of the columns, and it needs the outlet within about six feet of that column. Cord extensions void warranties on every major brand, so we always tell customers to have the electrician run the receptacle to a wall or ceiling drop right above where the lift will sit. Sketch the lift footprint on the floor with chalk before the sparky shows up. It saves hours.
The other thing to think about is which column will carry the power unit. Most lifts let you flip it left or right, but you have to decide before you assemble the columns. Look at your bay layout, decide which side of the vehicle you will normally walk to first, and put the power unit on that side. Then the outlet lives near that column. This is a five-minute conversation that saves the electrician from cutting drywall a second time when you realize the run went to the wrong wall.
Iowa Electrical Code and What Permits You Actually Need
Iowa follows the current National Electrical Code and defers permits to the local jurisdiction.
