An arm restraint is the mechanism that locks each arm of a two-post car lift into position once the pads are set on the vehicle’s frame points. It prevents the arms from swinging sideways as the vehicle is raised — because if an arm swings under load, the vehicle can slip off the pads. In a tire bay where the vehicle sits on the lift for 15 minutes and the technician does not touch the frame, the restraints get engaged and left alone. In a body shop, techs are pushing, prying, hammering, welding, and pulling against the vehicle for hours while it is up in the air. Every one of those actions puts sideways force into the arms.
Modern arm restraints from Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak lock automatically when the lift raises off the ground and remain locked until manually released. Older lifts, especially some used units from 15 to 20 years back, had restraints that engaged with a spring-and-tooth mechanism that could be worn or defeated. What safety cams and safety cam ladders do
Safety cams — sometimes called safety latches or mechanical locks — are the fail-safe system that catches the lift if hydraulic pressure is lost. If a hydraulic hose ruptures, a cylinder seal blows, or the power unit fails while the vehicle is up, the safety cams hold the lift at the last engaged rung until the shop can safely lower it.

Modern ladders have close rung spacing, positive engagement audible clicks, and single-lever release from both columns. How to test arm restraints during a car lift inspection

Modern safety cams engage with a distinct mechanical click every time the lift passes a rung. Some brands ramp this up with a clearly audible ratchet sound during the raise cycle — you hear the ladder walking up. That sound is not just noise, it is verification. If a body shop tech is running the lift up with a vehicle on the pads and does not hear the ratchet, something is wrong. Either the safety cam is stuck in the disengaged position, the ladder is dirty enough to be silent, or the mechanism is worn.
