An Urbandale tire-and-alignment shop owner asked us to spec a car lift for a new bay dedicated to wheel bearing and hub work. He was tired of pulling knuckles down to a bench press when a mid-rise or a two-post with the right access would let his tech pull, press, and reinstall the bearing on the lift. He also wanted an ALI Gold certified car lift because a customer of his had asked to see the sticker on their vehicle’s lift before signing a work order. That is a rising bar in the industry, and it should be. Here is how we walked him through the spec and the safety questions that matter.

Why ALI Gold Matters for a Car Lift Used on Wheel Bearing Work
ALI Gold is the Automotive Lift Institute’s third-party certification that a car lift meets the ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standard from design through manufacturing. Lifts that carry the Gold sticker have been engineered, tested, and audited by an independent lab — not just self-certified by the manufacturer. Wheel bearing work often involves impact loads: a tech pulls on a slide hammer, hits a bearing with a hydraulic press adapter, and puts side load into the arms. A lift that was engineered and tested for those loads is not the same thing as a lift the seller says will be fine.
The other reason we care about ALI Gold on a wheel bearing bay is the arm restraint. A certified lift has arm locking that engages before the vehicle leaves the ground and only releases when the vehicle is back on the deck. When a tech is pushing sideways on a knuckle with a press, that arm restraint is what keeps the arm from creeping out. On a cheap lift with worn detent pins, the arm can walk — and a walking arm under a car is exactly the kind of failure the ALI standard exists to prevent.
The Urbandale Shop and Its Existing Setup
The shop had three bays already — one alignment bay with a scissor rack, one general service two-post, and one drive-on four-post they used mostly for oil changes and tire rotations. The new fourth bay was going to be a dedicated hub-and-bearing bay. The owner wanted his best tech in there, working full days on hubs, brakes, and wheel bearing service without competing with the alignment queue.
That use case actually rules some car lift configurations out. A four-post is not the right pick — the runways block access to the underside of the hub and force the tech to work around ramp edges. A scissor is possible but limits how high the car goes for shoulder-comfortable work. A two-post symmetric with clean arm reach on both sides is the natural answer, and that is what we ended up specifying. We also priced a low-rise scissor for the alignment bay as a companion, but the main lift for wheel bearing work was the two-post.
What ALI Gold Certification Actually Tests
People sometimes think ALI Gold is a paperwork exercise. It is not. The lab test load is one-hundred-fifty percent of rated capacity — a ten-thousand-pound car lift is tested to fifteen thousand pounds. It is cycled thousands of times, tested for lock engagement, tested for descent rate on a controlled cylinder bleed, and audited at the factory for repeatability. When you buy a Gold-sticker lift, you are buying a lift that a lab said the design will not fail under those conditions.
What is not tested is your install. A perfectly engineered car lift on a three-inch slab with under-sized anchors is not a Gold-certified install — it is just a Gold-certified product misapplied. That is why the ALI Gold sticker is only half of the safety story. The other half is the install: the concrete, the anchors, the electrical, and the annual inspection. We do all of that on our installs and we photograph the anchor torque record.
Hub Access, Arm Reach, and Pinch-Weld Pucks
Wheel bearing work needs the wheel off, the caliper off, the rotor off, and the hub accessible from both sides — front for the axle nut, back for the knuckle bolts. A car lift with the right arm reach puts the pinch-weld puck under the sill and leaves the wheel well clear. If the arm sweeps under the wheel well, the tech is fighting the arm every time he swings a slide hammer. That is uncomfortable and slow.
The symmetric two-post we specified drops the pucks about eight inches inboard of the wheel wells on most vehicles. That gives clean access to both hubs. We also spec taller pinch-weld pucks on this kind of setup — the standard three-inch puck sometimes sits too low for a car with running boards or side skirts, and a five-inch or an adapter tower is safer than stacking blocks. Stacking blocks on a lift is bad practice on any day and worse on a wheel bearing job with impact tools.
Safety Locks and the Two-Stage Descent
Every ALI Gold car lift has mechanical safety locks that engage at set intervals up the column. On a two-post that is usually every three to four inches. When the tech goes to work, the lift comes up, the locks engage at the working height, and the hydraulic pressure is released — the mechanical latches carry the load, not the cylinder. That is the safety-critical detail. If a cylinder seal fails while a car is being worked on, the load stays on the latches.
Descent is two-stage. The tech has to push the lift up an inch to free the latches, then release the descent valve. That two-hand sequence prevents accidental drops. When a car lift comes in for annual inspection, the descent sequence and the lock engagement are two of the things we check every time. If a latch is not engaging square, the whole arm and latch assembly comes apart for inspection.
Torque Specs, Bearing Presses, and the Overhead
Modern wheel bearing hubs come with axle nut torques in the three-hundred-plus foot-pound range. A tech pulling that with a torque bar and a floor jack against the axle is asking a lot of the lift. A properly installed lift with fresh anchors and full arm engagement handles that load without issue, but we still want the tech thinking about how his loads are directed. Torque on the axle nut should be applied with the wheel back on the ground when possible — same for lug torque.
Overhead is a factor too. Bearing presses swung under a car in mid-air stand a couple feet tall. A lift with a low overhead beam gives you working height right up until the tech is trying to swing a hydraulic bearing press between the lift beam and the frame. We spec the tall-column version of the same lift when the shop plans this kind of work. Better to buy the overhead once than wish for it every day.
Documentation, Annual Inspection, and the ALI Sticker
The final piece of a safety-first walkthrough is the paper. Every car lift we install gets a printed ALI Gold certificate in the shop file, an anchor torque record from install day, and an annual inspection schedule. The ALI sticker goes on the column at eye height so any technician or customer walking by can read it. If the sticker fades, we replace it — a legible sticker is part of the certification.
