The shop we are describing is a four-bay RV and trailer specialist in Council Bluffs, mostly serving the western Iowa and eastern Nebraska over-the-road community. Their bread and butter is Class A motorhome chassis work, gooseneck horse and cargo trailer suspension, and the occasional Class C shock and airbag job. Before we installed the drive on auto lift, they were doing everything on jack stands and a set of tall cribbing blocks, which meant every suspension R&R was two guys, two hours of setup, and a real safety question every time a 20,000-pound coach was in the air.
They looked at two-post options first, and honestly a heavy-duty two-post can handle a big chassis, but the runway length and the drive-through configuration were what tipped them. Two-hour suspension jobs were routine, and the crew started taking work they had turned down before, like leaf spring replacements on triple-axle horse trailers, which are miserable on the ground and easy in the air. The single biggest first-year lesson was that a drive on auto lift is not just a lift, it is a workflow tool. It changes what jobs you can take and how you price them.
Rolling Jacks and the Wheels-Off Question
Wheels-off work on a heavy chassis is where a drive-on unit lives or dies. The Council Bluffs shop specced a pair of heavy-duty air-over-hydraulic rolling jacks with the lift, each rated at 6,000 pounds, and those jacks have been running almost daily. On a motorhome front axle, one rolling jack lifts one side of the axle while the wheel comes off, then swaps to the other side. On trailer axles they use both jacks and lift the entire axle assembly clear.
The lesson from year one is that you cannot spec the lift and skip the jacks and expect a full-service shop to survive. If they had bought the drive on auto lift alone, they would have been stuck doing wheels-off work on stands underneath a lifted vehicle, which nobody wants. Concrete, Ceiling, and the Council Bluffs Building
The Council Bluffs building had 14-foot side walls and a 6-inch reinforced slab, which is exactly what a heavy-duty drive on auto lift wants. Slab thickness is where most shop owners get bitten. A 4-inch slab is fine for a 10,000-pound home lift, but the 20,000 to 30,000-pound heavy-duty units want 6 inches of 4,000 PSI concrete or better, and if you core-drill and find 4 inches over rebar you can be looking at a slab cut, deepen, and re-pour before install. We check every commercial slab before we drop a lift, and in this case the slab spec was clean.
Ceiling height on a heavy-duty four-post lifting a Class A is a separate math problem. The coach is already 12 feet tall standing on the ground, and you need at least 24 to 30 inches of underclearance to do meaningful chassis work, so 15-foot walls is the realistic minimum and 16 feet is better. The Council Bluffs shop had exactly what they needed, but two shops in the same year had to reject a lift purchase because their ceilings would not clear a rig off the runway. Measure twice before you order.
Twenty-Year Total Cost of Ownership Honesty
Here is the piece nobody publishes: what does a heavy-duty drive on auto lift actually cost to own for twenty years? The purchase and install is the biggest number, obviously, but after that the annual cost drops fast. Year one, the shop budgeted a modest sum for hydraulic fluid, the annual ALI inspection, and a spare set of cables on the shelf. Year two through five they expect essentially maintenance-only spending, again a small annual number that mostly covers inspection and fluid.
The bigger items hit at years seven, twelve, and fifteen: cables (every 5 to 7 years on a heavy-duty unit if you inspect regularly), sheaves and pulleys (typically at the cable service), and a full pendant or power unit rebuild somewhere around year fifteen if the shop is running full-time. Over twenty years the total ownership cost is dominated by the initial purchase, and the running number is smaller than the annual insurance on the building. Compared to buying a cheap lift that has to be replaced twice in the same twenty years, an ALI-certified heavy-duty unit is the cheaper answer, every time.
What Broke, What Did Not, and What We Fixed
In the first year, one thing broke: a slack cable switch tripped on the driver-side rear at about the six-month mark, which is a $50 part and a fifteen-minute swap. That was it. No cable stretch beyond spec, no hydraulic leaks, no pendant issues. The lock latches on a heavy-duty drive on auto lift are engineered for exactly this kind of duty cycle and they show it. We told the shop to expect nothing else until the annual inspection and that has proven out.

First, buy the capacity you will actually need, not the smaller unit that saves a few thousand up front. A 25,000-pound lift handles a Class A with margin; a 20,000-pound lift is at the edge and you will feel it. Second, spec the rolling jacks up front, not later. Third, measure your slab and your ceiling before you sign anything, and if you cannot get honest answers from a supplier on those two questions, call somebody who will give them.
