A weekend hobbyist mechanic out of Dubuque called us about a home car lift for garage last fall with a very specific ask — he wanted a checklist he could work through before he spent the money. He was tired of ambiguous marketing pages and wanted to know exactly what to measure, what to check, and what would disqualify his current garage from ever holding a lift. That is a completely reasonable ask, and it is honestly what every buyer should be doing before they order. This article is that checklist, in the same order we walk through it on a phone call, so you can run through it on your own before you call anyone.

Measure your ceiling height honestly

Start at the ceiling. Grab a tape measure and hold it straight up from the floor to the lowest obstruction — a garage door track, a light fixture, an HVAC duct, whatever is actually the ceiling for lift purposes. Do not measure to the peak of a vaulted ceiling if the truss chord runs lower. Write that number down in inches, not feet, because a two-post lift spec will be given in inches and rounding up costs people money.

For a home car lift for garage, the two-post minimum is generally about eleven feet at the crossbar. Add another foot for the tallest vehicle you plan to raise, then add six inches of grace. If your ceiling is between ten and eleven feet, we start looking at a floor-plate style lift instead. If your ceiling is below ten feet, a two-post is off the table and you should be looking at a low-rise scissor or a mid-rise. If your ceiling is thirteen feet or more, everything is on the table.

Check the garage door opening height, not just the ceiling

The next number is the door. Measure the actual opening — top of the finished floor to the underside of the header when the door is fully rolled up. This is not the same as ceiling height. A lot of home garages have a nine-foot ceiling and a seven-foot door, and the door is what really constrains you. If your tallest vehicle barely clears the door on the way in, you are already at the ceiling for your future lift height too.

The Dubuque hobbyist had a nine-foot ceiling and a seven-foot door. That put him in low-rise scissor territory rather than two-post. He was disappointed at first, but a mid-rise turned out to be more useful for the brake, exhaust, and driveline work he was actually doing. A home car lift for garage does not have to reach eye level to be useful — a mid-rise at four to five feet of lift is enough for 80 percent of the wrenching most hobbyists actually do.

Verify concrete thickness and quality

Concrete matters most for two-post lifts because they anchor into the floor. Four inches of standard concrete over a compacted base is the residential minimum for most home two-posts. Some heavier commercial models want six inches. Four-post lifts are freestanding and forgiving — as long as the pad is flat and not cracked, they will sit on almost anything.

Do not guess your slab thickness. Take a masonry bit and drill a small hole in an unobtrusive corner. Measure the depth. If you hit rebar or wire mesh, note that too because it strengthens the anchor pull. If your slab is under four inches or has visible cracks running across the anchor zone, a four-post is your safest bet and we may recommend against a two-post regardless of what the model spec sheet says. We would rather sell you the right lift than let you install the wrong one.

Look at the electrical you already have

Almost every home car lift for garage on the market runs on 220V single-phase power off a 20-amp or 30-amp circuit. Check your panel. If you have a dryer plug in the garage, a welder receptacle, or an air compressor circuit, you may already have exactly what you need. If you do not, an electrician can add one for a few hundred dollars in most markets. That is a small line item on a lift project, but it is one people forget until install day.

Some smaller mid-rise scissor lifts run on 110V, which lets you plug the lift into a normal outlet. The trade-off is slower rise time and a lower lift height. For a hobbyist who mostly wants brakes and oil changes without dedicated wiring, a 110V mid-rise is a real option. The Dubuque hobbyist ended up on 220V because the shop already had a plasma cutter circuit that was underused. Match the lift to the power you have, not the other way around.

Think about the workflow around the lift

Space is not just about whether the lift physically fits. It is about whether you can still open a door on the vehicle when it is raised, walk around the ends without hitting a workbench, and roll a toolbox up to it without moving furniture. Sketch your garage on graph paper — one square per foot — and drop the lift footprint onto it. Two-post columns are typically two and a half feet on a side. Four-post lifts are about eight feet wide and eighteen feet long including runways.

Then ask yourself where you park a second car while the lift is in use. In the Dubuque garage, the hobbyist had a three-stall setup and could dedicate one stall to the lift permanently. That is the easiest version of this problem. If you have a two-stall and share the garage with a spouse’s daily driver, you need to think about a portable lift or a scissor that folds flat. A home car lift for garage that blocks daily life will get used once and then resented.

Decide between styles before you shop

Once the site is measured, the last checklist item is choosing the lift style. A four-post is best for storage and hobbyist maintenance where you do not need wheels-free access. A two-post is best when you do — exhaust, suspension, brakes, driveline. A mid-rise scissor is best for low ceilings and low door openings. A portable scissor is best when you cannot dedicate a full stall permanently.

Do not shop by brand first. Shop by style, then by capacity, then by brand. A home car lift for garage should match the way you actually work, not the way a marketing page describes an aspirational shop. The hobbyist we started this article with ended up on a mid-rise scissor lift he could push against the wall when he was not using it. That was the right lift for his garage. It was also not the lift he had originally been shopping for, which is exactly why the checklist exists.
