What varies is the exact spec of the four-post. Our Iowa-Illinois corridor customer had a 1968 Chevelle at about 3,500 lb curb weight and a 2019 Silverado 1500 crew cab at about 5,400 lb curb weight. Combined maximum lift load (if he ever needed to lift the Chevelle for underside inspection) was 3,500 lb, well within any 7,000 or 9,000 lb four-post rating. Storage load was also 3,500 lb static, held indefinitely on the safety locks. Any decent four-post handles both use cases, but a home car lift for garage optimized for storage-plus-service has a couple of specific specs worth understanding.
Why Four-Post Wins for Seasonal Storage
The mechanical reason four-post wins for storage is that a four-post at rest sits on mechanical safety locks, not on hydraulic pressure. When you cycle a four-post up and click it into a lock position, the weight of the stored vehicle is held by steel-on-steel engagement between the lock latch and the column ladder rack. Hydraulic pressure is not maintained. That means the cylinder is not under continuous stress during the four months your Chevelle sits at ceiling height for the winter.
Compare that to a two-post that also can rest on safety locks but is not designed for indefinite loaded rest, and the storage advantage is clear. A four-post can hold a car aloft for a year without any hydraulic degradation. A two-post technically can too, but the arm-and-swing geometry means the vehicle is not in a natural storage posture, and the pad placement is fussy for anything but active lifting. Weight Capacity Math for Long-Term Storage

Hydraulic Cylinder Basics for a Home Car Lift for Garage
The heart of a four-post lift is a single hydraulic cylinder that pushes a set of cables through pulleys and lifts the runways. The cylinder is typically 2 to 3 inches in bore diameter, roughly 60 to 72 inches in stroke length, and rated for 3,000-plus psi of working pressure. It is a heavy-duty industrial cylinder, and on a properly maintained lift it will run for decades without needing rebuild. But it is a wear item, and understanding how it wears will help you plan long-term maintenance.
The wear happens at two places. First, the piston seal (usually a hard-composite lip seal) sits on the piston head and seals working-pressure oil against the cylinder wall. Second, the rod seal (usually a nitrile or polyurethane U-cup) sits at the gland where the piston rod exits the cylinder and keeps oil from leaking outward. Both seals see cyclic pressure loading every time the lift cycles. Cycle count matters more than time-of-ownership, so a home car lift for garage that cycles 200 times a year (light home use) will hold up longer than one that cycles 2,000 times a year (busy pro shop).
When to Consider a Hydraulic Cylinder Rebuild
Two symptoms tell you the cylinder needs attention. First, weep at the gland (a small ring of oil around the rod where it exits the cylinder head) means the rod seal is starting to leak. Second, slow drift-down (the lift lowers a few inches over an hour with the pump off) means the piston seal is starting to bypass internally. Both conditions are normal aging, both are repairable with a rebuild kit, and neither requires replacing the entire cylinder in most cases.

Ignoring a leaking rod seal for a year does not usually cause failure, but it does mean topping up the reservoir more often and cleaning the drip.
