Sizing the lift to actual home use, not shop habits

The most common mistake heavy-truck shop owners make when buying a home lift is buying too much lift. His day-job equipment lifts 30-ton straight trucks. His home fleet is a half-ton pickup and a 4,500-pound SUV. He almost quoted himself into a 12,000-pound two-post out of habit. We walked him back to a 10,000-pound four-post with wide runways.

Add unexpected repairs — a cylinder seal replacement, a broken lock cable, a failed limit switch — and you might add another modest line. Total 20-year maintenance and repair spend, all in, sits in the low-to-mid four-figure range across two decades. Not much. That’s the payoff for the initial install investment: a home installation is a low-maintenance-cost, long-life asset when it’s specced and installed right.

Tire rotation, brake, and light service at home

His actual usage pattern is what most home lift buyers hope for: rotations every 5,000 to 7,500 miles across the household fleet, brake service every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, and one or two larger projects a year (transmission service, suspension work, etc.). On a four-post home car lift for garage, that’s maybe 30 to 50 raise cycles a year total. Compared to a commercial lift cycling 15 times a day, this is a leisure pace.

Depreciation and resale after two decades

Home lifts hold value well relative to most home-shop equipment. A 15-to-20-year-old lift with a clean history and current cables can move within a month. What kills resale is missing documentation, visible neglect (rust, hydraulic weeps, loose anchors), and non-original hardware. Even for a hobbyist not doing paid work, the math works if you’d otherwise pay a shop for oil changes, tire rotations, brake service, and occasional larger projects. Estimated 20-year shop-labor cost for those services on two vehicles: several multiples of the lift TCO. This is the honest answer to “is a home car lift for garage installation worth it.” For heavy users, easily yes. For light users who value their time, still yes. For someone who only changes wiper blades, probably not — but if you’re reading this, you’re not that person.
