Every good build-out sequence starts with the money question, because your budget determines every downstream choice: brand, configuration, slab spec, ceiling height, electrical, and access. We have four honest brackets that map to real product tiers. Under $4,500 is the entry-hobbyist tier. $4,500 to $7,000 is the serious home-user tier. $7,000 to $10,000 is the pro-shop-at-home tier. The mistake most first-time buyers make is starting with the brand or the capacity spec and backing into budget from there. That works if you can afford whatever you spec. Where under-$4,500 gets you in trouble is when your ambitions are bigger than the spec. A 3,500-lb sedan on a 7,000-lb lift is fine. A one-ton pickup on the same lift is not. Racing team crew chiefs who need to lift a shop truck and store a race car really cannot land here. But a genuine hobbyist storing a Miata and doing oil changes on a Camry absolutely can. $4,500 to $7,000: The Serious Home-User Sweet Spot
This is where most of our home installs land. In this bracket you get a name-brand four-post from Rotary or Challenger commercial (used to be BendPak) at 9,000-lb capacity, 156- or 172-inch runways, and the option to add rolling jacks and a caster kit. Or you can slide over to a name-brand two-post at 9,000 or 10,000 lb, though the two-post will consume more of your budget on installation.
Our crew chief in southwest Iowa landed here. He picked a 9,000-lb four-post with rolling jacks and the 172-inch runways, and it fit both his race car and his shop truck without stress. He wanted the storage capability, the drive-on speed, and the option to do wheels-off work with the rolling jacks. Total installed was just under $6,800. $7,000 to $10,000: When You Need More Capacity
Above $7,000 you are moving into either heavier capacity (10,000 to 12,000 lb four-post) or into a full pro-grade two-post with symmetric arms, three-stage fronts, and installation on a five-inch slab. This is also where extended-length runways, heavier rolling jacks, and premium features like air-hydraulic controls start showing up. If you are lifting three-quarter-ton or one-ton trucks regularly, or if you are running a real pro shop out of your home, this is your bracket.

A 12,000-lb lift for a household with two half-ton trucks and a sedan is overbuilt. The extra capacity does nothing except cost you a thousand dollars and take more ceiling height. But if you actually have the vehicles that need the capacity, this bracket exists for a reason and the equipment is worth what it costs. Above $10,000: Commercial or Specialty Only
Above $10,000 you are into genuinely commercial equipment: 14,000-lb-plus four-post, symmetric-swing-arm pro two-post with air-actuated dual locks, or specialty configurations like a mid-rise scissor plus a four-post in the same bay. This is the bracket for customers who are running an actual commercial operation from their home garage, or who are doing heavy-truck work, or who genuinely need to lift a diesel dually with a slide-in camper.
We do sell into this tier regularly, and it is not a bad place to be if the vehicles justify it. But it is not the right place for most home users. The most common regret we hear from over-buyers is not the money. It is the ceiling height they had to build to accommodate a bigger lift, and the slab spec they had to pour, both of which added five figures to the building itself. If the racing team crew chief had insisted on a 14,000-lb lift, his 12-foot ceiling would have been too short and we would have had to send him back to the builder. Sequencing the Build: Concrete Before Steel Before Lift
Now the sequencing. In a new build, the order that saves you money is: (1) settle on the lift model and get its footing spec, (2) pour concrete to that spec, (3) frame and roof, (4) electrical, (5) lift install. If you skip step one and pour a slab first, you may end up doing what our crew chief did: pouring a bare four-inch slab that is fine for a four-post but marginal for the two-post he originally wanted. If you skip the ceiling-height check before you frame, you may build a barn that is legally too short for the lift you had in mind.
Electrical is the last real gotcha. Most 9,000-lb four-posts need a 220V single-phase 30A circuit. Some smaller units run 110V. Some pro two-posts need three-phase power, which is not available at most residential services. Call us before you have the electrician wire the shop and we will spec the exact circuit. Getting these five steps in the right order takes maybe a week of pre-build phone calls and saves anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars in rework. Where a Racing Crew Chief’s Choice Differs
The racing crew chief made two decisions differently than a typical home buyer. First, he wanted 172-inch runways instead of 156, so his race car and his shop truck both center cleanly on the lift. Second, he built a lockable storage cage against the far wall of the bay so his tool cart and jack stands could live under the lift when it was down.
