Hydraulic Cylinder Seals: What Fails and When

Rebuild Kits, Fluid Type, and Iowa Temperature Swings
Iowa winters run to -20F. Iowa summers run to +95F. That temperature swing matters for two reasons. First, hydraulic fluid viscosity changes dramatically with temperature – cold oil moves through the pump slower and pressurizes the cylinder slower, so first-lift-of-the-day in an unheated pole barn is measurably slower than the second lift. Second, seal material degrades at both ends of the range if the wrong fluid was used.
Rotary and Challenger both spec Dexron III or equivalent ATF for most of their two-post home car lift for garage installations. Some heavier-duty commercial lifts spec ISO 32 hydraulic oil instead. The fluids are not interchangeable – ATF viscosity is different, and seals designed for one will slowly degrade in the other. Install Day: Anchor Torque, Alignment, and First Cycle
We showed up in Ames with the lift on a lift-gate truck, a rotary hammer, an anchor-torque wrench, and a laser level. First step: verify the slab. Second step: chalk out column positions to spec column-to-column distance and squareness to the bay walls. Third step: drill anchor holes to the exact depth per the manual, vacuum out the dust, set the wedge anchors, and torque in two passes to the manufacturer’s spec. Under-torqued anchors will pull under overload testing. Over-torqued anchors can crack the concrete around the base plate.
Once both columns were anchored and squared, we hung the crossbar with overhead cable and hydraulic hoses, filled the reservoir with fresh ATF, and cycled the lift five times empty to purge air from the cylinders and cables. Then a first cycle with the customer’s truck as the test load – up to full height, drop onto the primary safety, drop again onto the next lock, then back down. If we were spec’ing again from scratch and knew he would be running near-commercial volume on a home car lift for garage installation, we might have quoted him the CL10 as an alternative – similar spec, slightly different arm geometry, and both are stocked in Ames.
