An off-road and overlanding builder in east-central Iowa called us on a Thursday afternoon: his four-post hydraulic lift automotive setup had started bypassing internally, the deck was drifting down under a partially built Land Cruiser, and he had an oil pan gasket job to finish over the weekend for a paying customer. The lift was an older Atlas four-post with roughly 15 years of hard use, mostly holding heavy 80-series and 100-series builds. He already had a seal kit from a previous parts order sitting on the shelf. The Call: A Bypassing Cylinder on a Four-Post Atlas

The customer’s description was textbook: “It goes up fine but drops maybe an inch every ten minutes with a truck on it. Sometimes the pump kicks on by itself to catch up.” That is the signature of an internally bypassing cylinder — fluid moving past the piston seal from the pressure side to the return side, effectively short-circuiting the load-holding function. It is not a leak you can see. The reservoir is not losing fluid, the hoses are dry, and the visible cylinder rod looks clean. The problem is inside the barrel where the piston rides.

We asked him three diagnostic questions on the phone. Was the drop rate consistent whether the load was heavy or light? Yes. Did the lift ever fail to raise fully? No. Did the safety-cam mechanical locks engage properly? Yes, once he set them. Those three answers pointed us at the primary hydraulic cylinder — not the pump, not the load-holding valve at the manifold, not the hoses. A hydraulic lift automotive owner in this scenario has three options: replace the cylinder assembly outright, send the barrel and rod out for professional reseal, or rebuild it in place with a seal kit. The customer had the seal kit. We booked the visit for Monday.

Diagnosing an Internal Bypass Without Tearing It Down

Before pulling anything apart, we confirmed the diagnosis with two low-invasive tests. First, we isolated the load-holding valve by capping the return line at the manifold and cycling the lift. If the drift stopped, the valve was the problem. It did not stop. Second, we pressure-tested the cylinder by dead-heading it against the mechanical locks with the pump running and watched for pressure decay on the gauge over five minutes. It decayed. Both tests confirmed the bypass was inside the cylinder, past the piston seal specifically, and not a system valve issue.

Confirming diagnosis before tearing down saves the customer money and saves us from replacing a working part. On a hydraulic lift automotive setup, three things can cause the symptom he described: a piston seal blown from age or debris, a scored barrel that no seal will ride cleanly against, or a rod-side seal failure that lets fluid past on the retract stroke. The first is a straightforward seal-kit rebuild. The second means the barrel needs to be honed or the cylinder replaced. The third is another seal kit. Our next step was to pull the cylinder and look at the barrel inner surface — that would tell us which of the three we were dealing with and whether the seal kit on his shelf would actually solve the problem.

Seal Kit Sourcing: What Actually Fits Your Rod Diameter

Seal kits are not universal. Every hydraulic lift automotive cylinder has three critical dimensions: bore diameter (the inside of the barrel), rod diameter (the piston shaft), and stroke length. The seal kit must match the first two exactly — an eighth of an inch off on rod diameter and the wiper will not seal, or worse, will grab and roll. The customer’s seal kit was purchased two years earlier from a generic supplier and was labeled “Atlas 4-post replacement.” That labeling is not enough. Atlas has run several cylinder suppliers over the years and the bore and rod dimensions changed between generations.

When we pulled the cylinder and measured, the bore was 2.5 inches and the rod was 1.5 inches with a 76-inch stroke. His seal kit was for a 2.0-inch bore. It would not have worked. We shipped him the correct kit from our stock overnight — we keep the common bore-rod combinations at the Ames warehouse for exactly this scenario — and it landed Tuesday morning. This is why we always recommend measuring the cylinder before ordering parts, not going by the lift model or the parts-list description. A hydraulic lift automotive owner who orders by model name gets it wrong maybe 20 percent of the time; owners who order by measured bore and rod are right basically always.

The Rebuild Sequence Our Tech Followed

Tuesday morning, cylinder on the bench: we removed the gland nut, slid the rod and piston assembly out of the barrel, inspected the barrel inner surface with a bore light, and confirmed the walls were clean — no scoring, no pitting. That was the good news. If the barrel had been scored we would have had to send it for a hone or replace the cylinder outright, and the customer’s oil pan job would have slipped a week. Instead we cleaned the barrel, cleaned the piston, and worked through the seal kit in the sequence the manufacturer specifies.

The sequence: replace the rod wiper first (the seal that keeps dirt out of the barrel on the retract stroke), then the rod seal (the pressure-side seal on the rod side), then the piston seal (the main pressure seal on the piston itself), and finally the wear rings and back-up rings if included. On a hydraulic lift automotive cylinder rebuild, the piston seal is the one that actually stops the bypass — the others are for external leakage. We greased every seal with the correct hydraulic-compatible lubricant before installing, and we torqued the gland nut to spec with a soft-jaw wrench. Every step was documented in a photo log.

Why Rebuild Instead of Replace on a Hydraulic Lift Automotive Cylinder

The obvious question the customer asked: why rebuild the cylinder instead of buying a new one? Three answers. First, cost. A seal kit is a fraction of what a new cylinder assembly costs, especially for an older lift where the OEM cylinder may be discontinued and only aftermarket options are on the market. Second, downtime. A same-week rebuild versus a two-week wait on a special-order cylinder is real revenue for a shop with paying customers on the calendar. Third, quality. A properly rebuilt cylinder with a good seal kit and a clean barrel is functionally identical to new and often outlasts the aftermarket replacement.

Where we do recommend replacement over rebuild: if the barrel is scored past a certain depth, if the rod shows pitting or chrome flaking, or if the cylinder is a discontinued design with no seal kit available. Those cases you cut losses and buy the replacement. But for a hydraulic lift automotive owner whose lift is otherwise in good shape and whose cylinder just needs seals, the rebuild path is almost always right. We rebuild dozens of these a year for shops across Iowa and neighboring states, and the failure rate on a properly rebuilt cylinder is basically zero for the next decade of service. Getting Back to Oil Pan Gasket Work by Tuesday

By Tuesday afternoon, the customer had his lift back in service. We cycled it empty three times, then loaded a shop truck onto it and cycled it three more times under load, watching for any drift on the mechanical locks and any weeping at the gland nut. Both were clean. We handed him a rebuild log with photos, torque values, and the seal-kit part numbers so he had documentation for his shop file and for any future service. He was under the Land Cruiser doing oil pan gasket work by Wednesday morning.
