A hydraulic lift automotive install for an RV and trailer service shop is a slightly different animal than a passenger car bay. Ceilings need to be taller, drive-thru width needs to be wider, and the capacity conversation runs from 12K on the small end up to 30K for genuine Class A motorhomes. We are Auto Lift Services in Ames, and this article is a first-year ownership story from a Des Moines-metro RV and trailer shop that put in a mid-capacity commercial hydraulic setup last summer for annual state inspections and running repairs. From delivery through month twelve, this is what actually happened, what the trade-in value looks like now, and what we would do differently if we ran the project again from the start.

The Shop That Kept Getting Turned Away

The owner runs a family-owned RV and trailer shop in the western Des Moines metro. He is the second generation, and his father started the business fixing horse trailers in the 1990s. For the last decade they had been turning away Class C motorhome customers because their existing 10K two-post could not safely lift a 14,000-pound rig, and their alternative was a set of jack stands on a flat floor, which is fine for brake work but not for state inspections that require a full underside walk-through. He was losing at least 30 inspection appointments a year to a competitor an hour east.

He called us in April looking for advice, not a purchase. We ended up talking for 90 minutes about ceiling constraints, existing electrical, drive-thru clearance, and whether he really wanted a two-post or a heavy-duty four-post. The building had a 15-foot ceiling and a 12-foot overhead door, which was tight for the taller two-post columns we would normally spec for a 15K asymmetric lift. He was also worried about how the trade-in market would look in five years if he decided to upgrade to a four-post or a scissor-and-alignment combo down the road.

Why We Went Hydraulic Instead of Air-Over-Hydraulic

Some heavy-duty lifts run air-over-hydraulic, which uses shop air pressure to actuate the hydraulic pump instead of an electric motor. We steered him away from air-over. A pure electric hydraulic lift automotive design is more reliable in a shop where the compressor runs hot, less finicky about oil quality in the air lines, and easier to service in the field. Air-over units add another failure point in the pilot valve and require a very clean, dry air supply that most RV shops do not maintain because they use their compressors for tire inflation and impact tools all day.

We also priced both options honestly on a ten-year cost basis. The electric hydraulic lift automotive rig came in about $700 cheaper up front and roughly $2,000 cheaper across ten years of maintenance and downtime once we accounted for realistic failure rates in a busy shop environment. The air-over premium made sense in a paint shop or an environment where sparks were a genuine hazard, but a bay that services diesel motorhomes did not have that constraint. He signed the order the following Tuesday for a Rotary SPO18 with tall columns and truck adapters.

Month One: Install, Commissioning, First Vehicles

Delivery was mid-May, install the last Wednesday of the month. The slab was seven inches at 4,500 PSI, pouring cleaner than we normally see, so we skipped any prep. The tall columns cleared his ceiling by four inches, which is closer than we like but adequate. First vehicle up was his own service truck for a shakedown cycle. First customer vehicle was a Class C motorhome for a state inspection on the following Monday. Cycle time from arrival to full lift was 78 seconds under a 12,000-pound rig, well within factory spec, no cable creaks, no hydraulic groan.

We built in a 30-day recheck as a matter of practice on every install. On day 32 we came back with a cable tension gauge, torque wrench, and a fresh quart of hydraulic fluid. Nothing needed adjustment. The cables were where we set them, the anchors were tight, the reservoir was full. He had already run 41 vehicles across the lift, including three inspections that had previously been turned away. Revenue impact in month one was already tracking to cover the monthly financing payment two-to-one, which is a healthy leading indicator on any capex.

Months Two Through Six: Utilization and Learning Curve

Between June and October the lift saw 340 vehicles. About 60 percent of those were routine RV service, 25 percent were state inspections, and 15 percent were heavy pickups the shop had also been turning away previously. Utilization ran at roughly 45 percent of available bay hours in month two, climbing to 68 percent by month five once the word spread that they now had the equipment to handle bigger rigs. That utilization curve is textbook for a properly sized hydraulic lift automotive purchase; too low and you overbought, too high and you underbought and need a second bay soon.

The one hiccup was a slow leak on the passenger-side cylinder around month four. The seal was seeping about a drop every three cycles, which is not dangerous but is annoying and eventually will drain the reservoir over a long weekend. We shipped a seal kit overnight, drove down the next Tuesday, replaced the seals in about 90 minutes, refilled and bled the system, and were on the road by lunch. Total downtime was three hours. No revenue lost because they scheduled the repair between morning and afternoon appointments. That kind of quick turnaround is why serviceability of a hydraulic lift automotive rig matters as much as the initial spec.

Trade-In and Resale Value at Year One

He asked us at month ten what the trade-in value on the lift would look like if he decided to upgrade to a heavier 30K unit for genuine Class A work. The honest answer for a one-year-old Rotary SPO18 in known-good condition with documented service history is roughly 65 to 75 percent of new selling price on a private-party sale, and closer to 55 percent on a trade-in through us against a new lift. Cables are a wear item and their remaining service life factors into the value; a lift with fresh cables and a clean cylinder history holds value better than one with 20,000 cycles on tired cables.

What surprised him was how strong the private-party market for used commercial two-posts is in the Midwest. We see three or four buyers a month calling us looking for a used lift in the $2,500 to $4,500 range, mostly hobbyists and small independent techs opening a first bay. If he decided to sell his SPO18 privately in year five, we projected he would still recover 45 to 55 percent of new price, and roughly 30 to 40 percent in year ten. Compared to any other shop tool that number is exceptional, and it is what makes a proper hydraulic install a real asset on the balance sheet.

What Broke, What Held, What Surprised Us

Across the first twelve months the only actual failure was the cylinder seal leak in month four. Everything else was preventive: the six-month filter change on the power unit, an anchor re-torque check we do at 90 days and at the anniversary, and a cable inspection on the anniversary that came back clean. Column paint held up better than we expected in a bay that sees mud from RV undercarriages weekly. Latch mechanisms cycled smoothly with no lubrication maintenance beyond a shot of white lithium grease at the anniversary check.

What surprised us on the upside was how well the arm restraints held up under repeated adapter changes. He runs adapters up and down constantly between motorhomes, trailers, and pickups, which means the arm restraint gears cycle more than on a typical passenger-car shop. Twelve months in, the gears show minimal wear. What surprised us on the downside was how much dust and RV underbody debris built up around the cable pulley housings. He now blows them out with a compressor every Friday afternoon as part of shop close, and we recommend that habit to every RV or trailer shop running a hydraulic lift automotive setup.

Would We Recommend This Setup Again

Yes, without hesitation, and he would too. The only thing we would change from the original spec is adding one more set of tall drop-in adapters up front. He ended up buying a second set at month seven when he realized how often he needed to stack adapters for tandem-axle trailers with unusual pinch-weld geometry. Adding them to the initial order would have saved him a second freight bill and a few weeks of workarounds. Everything else about the configuration held up under real-world Iowa RV shop use, which is a rougher duty cycle than most passenger-car applications.

The financing note closed out on schedule at month twelve. Revenue attributable to the new lift in year one was roughly seven times the total project cost, most of it in state inspection appointments they previously turned away. Year two projections have him adding a second bay with a scissor lift for smaller trailers and a bearing-and-brake specialty station. He will finance that build with us too.
