CV Axle Work: What the Lift Actually Has to Do
CV axle and half-shaft replacement is a wheels-off, front-end-in-the-air job. You need swing arms that clear the tie rods and lower control arms, a lift height that gets the halfshaft-to-transmission joint at chest level, and enough clear-floor space between the columns to swing a stub axle out. For most passenger cars and light trucks, that means asymmetric two-post geometry with a 45-degree column turn and drive-thru arms that don’t foul the door when open. Used vs New: What Depreciates and What Doesn’t
The columns and carriages on a well-maintained commercial two-post do not depreciate the way a piece of equipment should. We regularly service 30-year-old Rotary lifts that still hold plumb and pass ALI inspection. What depreciates fast is the hydraulic system, the cables, and the electrical components. A used hydraulic lift automotive purchase, then, is really a purchase of structural steel plus a set of consumables that may or may not have life left.
If you’re buying used, the questions are: has it ever been drop-tested and passed? Are the columns plumb and free of impact damage? Do the safety locks engage on both sides simultaneously, or is one lagging? Has the cylinder ever bypassed? A used 1990s or early-2000s Rotary SPO9 or SPO10 will typically measure a couple of inches narrower on drive-thru, still 10K capacity, and — if it was maintained — still passes inspection. That’s where the value case for used lives: same core geometry, same load rating, half or less the price. What you give up is the ALI-Gold current cert (older lifts were certified when made but may need re-cert), sometimes the height of the drive-thru arch, and the newer safety features like offset lock ladders and 24-volt low-voltage controls. The Cylinder Question on a Used Buy
The single most likely failure point on a used hydraulic lift automotive purchase is the master cylinder — the ram that lifts one column and passes fluid to slave the other. Bypass, where a worn piston seal lets fluid squirt past instead of pushing the ram, shows up as slow drop-under-load, uneven column travel, or a lift that won’t hold pressure overnight. We see this a lot on used Atlas 4-post units and older two-posts that have logged 15,000+ cycles without a fluid change.
The fix is a seal kit — most manufacturers still stock them, and even on discontinued models we can usually cross-reference dimensions and source generic seals. Rebuild labor is two to three hours for a two-post; parts are modest. So a used lift with a suspected bypass cylinder isn’t a dealbreaker — it’s a negotiation lever. Take a meaningful chunk off the buy price, put a seal kit in before you set anchors, and you’re ahead. What you don’t want is a used unit where the cylinder rod itself is scored or pitted; that means the seal will fail again in short order, and rod replacement is a factory-only part on many older lifts. Anchoring the Lift into Old Cedar Rapids Concrete
Half the third-generation shops we walk into have concrete floors older than the lift they’re replacing. Old concrete is generally fine for anchoring — sometimes better than new because it’s fully cured — but it can hide cracks, rebar corrosion, or thin spots from previous saw-cuts. What you give up on a used unit isn’t the structural warranty (which is usually already exhausted or was voided by resale), it’s the hydraulic and electrical coverage — the exact components most likely to fail in the next five years.
For a family shop doing daily CV work, that math sometimes tips new. If your bays run six days a week and downtime is money, a hydraulic lift automotive with three-to-five years of hydraulic warranty on a new install is worth the premium.
