A farm-shop owner in southwest Iowa is putting up a new 30-by-40 pole building this summer and wants a scissor lift for automotive exhaust and driveline work in one bay. He called us at framing stage to ask the sequencing question: what do the concrete guys need to know, what does the electrician need to rough in, and where does the lift itself land in the build-out order? This checklist is the answer, and it is the same checklist we send to any rural shop owner sequencing a scissor lift for automotive service into a new build rather than retrofitting.

Step one: pick the lift before you pour the slab

The single biggest new-build mistake we see is a shop owner who pours a slab, frames the walls, closes in the roof, and then calls us about a scissor lift for automotive service. Now their slab is 4 inches with mesh, their ceiling is 10 feet, and their intended lift needs 6 inches of concrete and 12 feet of clear height. They either downgrade the lift or eat a demo bill. Pick the lift first. The slab and the ceiling flex around the lift, not the other way around.

On a new southwest Iowa farm build, we help the owner pick the scissor unit at framing stage. Full-rise 9,000 or 12,000-pound, portable or flush-mount, base-plate or overhead configuration; all these choices drive the slab thickness, rebar layout, ceiling height, door height, and electrical placement. Twenty minutes with us on a phone call turns into a one-page spec sheet you hand to your concrete guy, your electrician, and your framer. Every trade prices from the same drawing. This is the cheapest way to build a shop right the first time.

Step two: slab drawing for the concrete crew

Your concrete crew wants to know slab thickness, rebar spacing, control joint placement, and expansion joints. For a scissor lift for automotive service anchored in place, we recommend a minimum 5-inch pour at 4,000 PSI with #4 rebar on 16-inch centers throughout the shop, and a thickened 6-inch pad under the intended lift footprint. Control joints stay at least 4 feet from any anchor location. Expansion joints stay well clear of the footprint entirely.

If your concrete crew wants to argue about the extra thickness under the lift pad, walk them through the math: a 3,300-pound scissor unit at full lift with a 6,000-pound pickup on board puts real point loads on each corner anchor. A 4-inch slab handles it if the crete is good and the rebar is tight. A 5-inch slab handles it with margin. On a new build, the extra concrete is small money and it eliminates any anchoring debate later. We send a written slab drawing to any farm-shop customer buying a scissor lift for automotive service on a new pole building; ask for it when you order.

Step three: ceiling height and truss layout

Southwest Iowa farm shops typically go up with 12-foot or 14-foot sidewalls. For a full-rise scissor lift for automotive service, 12 feet is minimum acceptable and 14 feet is comfortable. Remember that a scissor unit’s max height is not the number that matters; the number that matters is platform lift plus vehicle height plus your head clearance. A 50-inch full rise plus a 78-inch pickup plus 6 inches of clearance is 11 feet 8 inches. On a 12-foot sidewall with a truss chord dropping at the peak, you may have less clear height than the sidewall number suggests.

Also confirm your truss geometry. Scissor units have no overhead structure of their own (unlike a 2-post overhead unit), so trusses only matter for clear height and for any secondary storage decking above. If you are planning a mezzanine or a storage loft over the lift bay, it must clear the fully-raised vehicle plus safety envelope. Draw this at framing stage. On a scissor lift for automotive service in a new build, the ceiling is your one-shot decision.

Step four: electrical rough-in

Rough your electrical for the scissor lift for automotive service into the plans the same day you pick the model. Every full-rise scissor unit runs on 220V single phase, 20 or 30 amp dedicated, and the run wants to terminate within about 6 feet of the power unit location. On a new farm build, that means an outlet or a hardwire disconnect on the wall closest to where the lift’s power unit will sit. Talk to your electrician about panel space and total shop load before the drywall goes up.

While you are at it, budget for shop-wide 220V infrastructure. A welder, an air compressor, and a scissor unit all pull hard. A subpanel dedicated to the shop with room to grow is worth the small upcharge over a bare-minimum panel. On a mixed-use farm shop that will run a grain leg, a scissor unit, a welder, and maybe a car heater in the winter, a 200-amp subpanel is not overkill. Do this at rough-in and you will never think about it again.

Step five: door swing and drive-through planning

Draw your vehicle path from the shop door to the scissor lift for automotive service and back out. A full-rise scissor unit typically sits perpendicular to the vehicle’s arrival path, with the vehicle driving on across the platform’s runways. You want at least 8 feet of clear approach in front of the lift so a long-bed pickup can straighten up before rolling on. A wide overhead door (12 or 14 feet) helps; a standard 9-foot door will limit some vehicles.

Also plan door swing clearance. A large overhead door swinging out or a walk-through door swinging in at the wrong point can eat your working space around the lifted vehicle. On a 30-by-40 building with the scissor lift in one bay, the walk-through door goes on the opposite gable end. On a scissor lift for automotive service that will also see occasional exhaust and driveline work, you need to be able to walk around three sides of the lifted vehicle without stepping around a swung door.

Step six: build-out order once framing closes

Sequence: slab and rebar (with the lift footprint pad thickened), framing to the ceiling height spec, roof and insulation, electrical rough with the dedicated 220V run and disconnect at the lift location, air compressor plumbing if you are running lines, drywall or interior finish, floor coating (optional, epoxy is nice), and then lift install. The lift is one of the last things to arrive. Do not accept freight before the shop is enclosed and the slab is fully cured; wet concrete and a 3,300-pound crate do not mix.

Concrete cure time matters. Fresh concrete continues to gain strength for weeks. On a new farm-shop pour, we like at least 21 days of cure before we anchor a scissor lift for automotive service into it. Sooner and the anchors set into concrete that has not reached design strength. Later is always fine. Time your factory order so the crate arrives after cure, not before. We track your build schedule when you order and we shift the ship date if your concrete schedule slips. That is normal.

Step seven: what to have on the shelf on day one

On install day, we like to see the shop owner also take delivery of a spare cylinder rebuild kit, a spare set of anchor bolts, a bottle of the manufacturer’s spec hydraulic fluid, and the printed operator manual in a shop binder. None of these are urgent, but they are cheap while you are already placing the order, and they eliminate the “where do I get one of these” question at 8pm on a Saturday. Ask us to include them on your quote and we will bundle them.

Once the scissor lift for automotive service is installed, get in the habit of a daily visual check and a weekly function-test on the safety locks. Log both in a shop binder. A farm shop that lasts 20 years on a well-maintained lift is the norm, not the exception. A farm shop that eats a lift in five years usually skipped the daily habits and never rebuilt the cylinder seals. The build-out gets you started. The habits keep the lift running.
