What a Hydraulic Cylinder Rebuild Kit Actually Includes

Most manufacturer kits ship with the rod seal, the wiper ring that keeps grit out, the piston seal that separates the pressure and return sides of the cylinder, one or two backup rings, and sometimes a new gland nut O-ring. That is the full stack that keeps hydraulic fluid inside and dirt outside. Prices for those kits, at the OE level, generally run in the hundred-to-two-hundred-dollar range depending on cylinder size. Aftermarket kits exist and can be cheaper, but the seal compound matters — Buna-N is common and adequate for most fluids, while Viton runs hotter and lasts longer if you push the lift hard.

The rebuild itself is genuinely doable for a mechanically minded owner if the cylinder can be removed cleanly, but there are two catches. First, if the rod has scoring from grit exposure, no seal will hold — you need a new rod or a new cylinder. Second, reassembly requires a clean bench and the right feel for seating seals without cutting them. A complete replacement cylinder from Rotary or BendPak generally runs several hundred to a thousand dollars depending on capacity class and model. Not cheap, but a new cylinder resets your maintenance clock by another ten to fifteen years of light hobby use. On the collector’s warranty case, we replaced. On an out-of-warranty scissor from 2008 that another customer brought us last spring, we rebuilt. A Year Later — What We’d Do Differently and What Stays

Twelve months in, the collector’s summary was blunt: he’d buy the same lift again, but he wants an air-line accessory kit installed with the next unit rather than as an afterthought. That’s a useful data point for anyone else considering a scissor lift for automotive use in a hobby setting. The lift itself has been faultless since the warranty cylinder swap. The mid-height locks are still his favorite feature — brake service and shock work at a natural back angle beats stooping under a four-post ramp every time. What he’d change: he’d have run a compressed air drop to the lift bay from day one instead of dragging a hose across the garage. He’d also have bought an extra set of frame-cradle adapters for the classic — the standard pads worked, but the wider-stance adapters would have saved him repositioning time.

On the cost side, he estimated the lift paid for itself in avoided shop labor within the first year alone, counting tires, brakes, and one suspension refresh. Not counting the enjoyment of being able to look at both cars in the air on a Saturday morning.
