A body shop foreman in West Des Moines walked into our showroom last spring holding a spec sheet from an online seller and asked whether a scissor lift for automotive alignment work would replace the aging four-post alignment rack he had been running for fifteen years. His shop was doing more collision work with alignment as a mandatory follow-up, and the four-post was tying up a bay he needed for paint prep. We spent about an hour with him going through the buyer’s guide questions, and this article is essentially that conversation. Alignment on a scissor is a legitimate workflow if the equipment is spec’d correctly and the operator understands what the lift can and cannot do.

Understand what alignment on a scissor actually requires
Alignment work is not just lifting a car. It requires the vehicle to be perfectly level in the fore-aft and side-to-side axes, front turntables that let the wheels pivot for caster and camber measurement, and rear slip plates that let the rear tires shift as the front is adjusted without binding the suspension. A scissor lift for automotive alignment must be built with pockets for those turntables and slip plates cast or welded into the deck runners. Retrofit turntables sitting loose on a standard scissor deck do not stay flat enough for a valid alignment reading. Buy the alignment version of the scissor from the factory or do not attempt alignment on that lift.

The plates are captive so they do not shift or fall out during vehicle drive-on, and they lock during positioning so the technician can drive the car onto the deck without hunting for float. Deck length and wheelbase clearance for common vehicles
Body shops see a wide vehicle mix. Passenger cars run 105-inch wheelbases. Full-size SUVs and pickups run 130 to 145 inches. Extended-cab long-bed pickups can hit 160 inches. A scissor lift for automotive alignment work needs a deck long enough that the front turntables and rear slip plates land under the actual axle positions for every vehicle the shop expects to service. Rotary and Challenger alignment scissors typically ship with 80 to 84 inches of runner length and rear slip plates that are adjustable in position, giving effective wheelbase coverage from about 95 inches to 150 inches without accessories.
For a shop that regularly aligns extended-cab pickups, ask about an extended runner option. It adds 12 inches to the effective wheelbase coverage and runs a couple of thousand dollars extra. It is worth it if half your alignment volume is trucks. For a body shop primarily doing passenger cars and mid-size SUVs the standard runner length is fine. We ask about vehicle mix during the quote so we can spec correctly the first time instead of shipping something that leaves 20 percent of the shop’s work sitting on the old rack.
Cable inspection intervals and replacement timing
Some scissor lift designs use synchronization cables to keep the two sides of the deck rising at the same rate. Not every scissor uses cables (many use equalizer bars or hydraulic slave cylinders instead) but the ones that do need periodic inspection. The cables run through pulleys inside the linkage and are under constant tension. Over time they stretch, fray, and eventually break. On an alignment-capable scissor lift for automotive precision work, cable stretch translates directly into deck twist, which invalidates the alignment procedure before it even begins.
Our recommended cable inspection interval for commercial scissor lifts is quarterly. Look at the visible sections of cable for broken strands, corrosion, or obvious slack. Full replacement is typically indicated at year 5 to 7 for a shop cycling 20 or more times a day, or when any inspection finds broken strands, whichever comes first. Budget one cable replacement over the ten-year life of the equipment as a normal maintenance cost, not a defect.
Ceiling clearance and lift height for alignment ergonomics
Alignment work is done at approximately waist height on the technician. The deck needs to rise high enough that the technician can reach the tie-rod adjuster and camber bolts comfortably. On a Rotary or Challenger full-rise scissor, the deck at full lift sits about 74 inches off the floor. That puts a small car’s suspension at chest height on a six-foot technician, which is where the alignment adjustments are easiest to make. Ceiling height needs to accommodate the top of the tallest vehicle at full deck extension. A 12-foot ceiling handles most passenger vehicles. A 13-foot ceiling handles pickups and SUVs.
West Des Moines body shops often sit in industrial-park buildings with 14-foot ceilings, which is comfortable for any scissor lift for automotive alignment we would sell. Older downtown shops with 11 or 12-foot ceilings work for cars and SUVs but constrain the vehicle mix. If your ceiling is 12 feet or lower and you regularly align full-size pickups, expect to lift the pickup to about mid-height for the alignment rather than to full extension. That is fine ergonomically but limits the flexibility of the bay for other work.
Alignment machine integration and workspace planning
A scissor lift for automotive alignment work needs the alignment machine positioned so the camera head or targets have clear sight lines to the vehicle wheels. Most modern alignment machines are Hunter, John Bean, or Ranger units with either camera-based heads or wireless target pods that clamp to the wheels. The camera unit typically rolls on a stand that positions in front of the vehicle, so plan for six to eight feet of clear space in front of the lift’s drive-on ramps. Behind the lift, allow four feet of clear space for cable management and the alignment printer.
We coordinate alignment machine placement during the lift install if the shop is buying both simultaneously. For Iowa shops we recommend Hunter Engineering as the alignment machine vendor because the local support network is genuinely strong and the equipment integrates with our lift work cleanly. Hunter does not sell direct in every state but they have solid dealer coverage in Iowa. If your shop already has an alignment machine from another vendor, we work around it and position the scissor lift accordingly during install.
Installation and floor requirements in older Des Moines buildings
The West Des Moines industrial corridor mostly has pours from the 1980s and 90s, which are typically adequate for scissor lift anchoring. Older downtown shops need a core sample or careful visual inspection before we commit to an anchor spec. Minimum requirement for any scissor lift for automotive alignment work is a four-inch pour at 3,000 psi with no visible cracks or expansion joints within 18 inches of the anchor locations. We prefer six inches at 3,500 psi for alignment lifts specifically because the precision of the alignment reading depends on absolute deck stability, and thicker concrete means less flex under load.
If the shop’s floor is uncertain, we can arrange a concrete testing service to core-sample and lab-test the pour before install. That runs a few hundred dollars and eliminates the risk of finding out at anchor-drill time that the pour is inadequate. For a body shop investing thirty to forty thousand dollars in an alignment scissor plus machine plus install labor, the concrete testing is cheap insurance.
