What seasonal storage actually means in a body shop

Seasonal storage in a body shop is not the same as a hobbyist storing his weekend car. Body shops store customer vehicles while parts are on backorder, while a total-loss appraisal is in review, or while the customer’s insurance company drags out payment. Those vehicles need to be off the floor and out of the way but not damaged. That means the scissor lift for automotive body shop storage needs to hold weight safely on its mechanical locks for weeks — sometimes months — at a time, without cable stretch or cylinder bleed-down.

It also means the vehicle needs to be accessible when the parts show up or the check clears. Not every scissor stores a car conveniently. Some models block access to the storage bay when the lift is at holding height. Some interfere with the shop’s normal traffic pattern. Vehicle mix drives capacity

Entry-level scissors will not hold up in a dual-purpose body-shop role, and the cost of a mid-service replacement is more than the price gap between tiers.

If that math shows less than 40 inches of travel, you do not have a scissor lift for automotive body shop storage — you have a very fancy jack stand. Consider a low-ceiling two-post if your ceilings are marginal, or accept that you will only store shorter vehicles on the scissor. Measure first, quote second. Electrical: the question body shops keep missing

Body shops we work with routinely underestimate the electrical work needed for a new lift. Most scissor lifts run comfortably on single-phase 220V, which is the good news. The bad news is you need a dedicated 30-amp circuit with the right gauge wire from panel to disconnect, and most body shops do not have a spare 30-amp slot in the main panel. Adding a subpanel or upgrading service is a real cost — usually a few hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on your panel condition and the distance from panel to lift.

Three-phase power is not required for a scissor lift for automotive body shop use, but if you have three-phase already, some heavier commercial models run more efficiently on it. Do not upgrade to three-phase just to buy a specific scissor — the cost of a three-phase upgrade dwarfs any single-phase-to-three-phase efficiency difference. Stick with single-phase 220V and buy a lift that runs on it. Circuit sizing and disconnect location

Beyond the panel question, the circuit specifics matter. Most single-phase 220V scissors want a 30-amp double-pole breaker with 10-gauge wire. Longer runs — over 50 feet from panel to lift — may need 8-gauge to keep voltage drop under 3 percent. A disconnect switch mounted within 5 feet of the lift is required by code in most jurisdictions and is best practice everywhere. Body shops sometimes ask if they can hard-wire the lift into an existing 220V compressor circuit or share a circuit with another piece of equipment. The answer is no. Scissor lifts want a dedicated circuit with no other loads on it. Shared circuits trip breakers under load, and a lift that trips mid-descent is not a good time for the tech underneath it. Budget for the dedicated circuit and the disconnect. It is one of the cheapest safety line items in the whole install project and one of the ones that saves the most trouble later.

Storage-hold safety and monthly checks

A body shop that uses a scissor for long-term storage has a different maintenance schedule than a shop that only cycles the lift up and down for daily work. Static hold — a car sitting on the safety locks for two weeks — puts different stress on the mechanical components than dynamic cycling. Long static holds can cause cable stretch, cylinder rod seepage, and safety-cam corrosion if the shop environment is humid or unheated.

Our recommended check schedule for a storage-focused scissor lift for automotive body shop use is: weekly walk-around while a vehicle is stored (look for any drift in lift height, any hydraulic seepage, any visible cable damage), monthly full inspection cycle (down to full-down, back up to full extension, verify all locks engage), and annual professional service. This is more frequent than a shop that only cycles daily. Storage puts static load on components that were not designed for static load exclusively, so you compensate with more frequent looks. Twenty seconds of walking around the lift once a week catches 90 percent of the issues that would otherwise become big problems.
