The Bay He Started With

The collector had an oversized three-stall garage — one stall he was willing to dedicate to lift work, plenty of ceiling height, and plenty of depth. The bay in question was 12 feet wide and 26 feet deep, with a 10-foot ceiling and a slab that had been poured with the house 15 years earlier at 4 inches thick, unknown rebar. That last detail became the first conversation. Any scissor lift for automotive brake service in a personal garage sits on concrete that was probably not designed for lifts, and the first job is figuring out whether the slab can hold up.

We cored a sample and sent it to a lab. The concrete came back at 3,400 psi, which is at the low end of acceptable for a moderate-capacity scissor. Install Day and What Surprised Him

First Brake Job on the New Lift

Storage Mode and Second-Car Underneath

What he did want, occasionally, was to raise one car high enough to park a second car underneath for short-term storage. Some scissors can do this within their rated capacity and lock spacing; others cannot. We spec’d his unit to handle the storage-mode use case up to eight hours at a time.

In practice, he uses this maybe two or three times a year — when a friend brings a car over for a weekend and both need a place indoors. It is not a primary use case, but the flexibility to do it occasionally without dedicated storage infrastructure was worth something to him. Full-time car storage on any lift is a different conversation — that job wants a purpose-built four-post storage lift with slower ramps and different safety geometry. A scissor is not the right tool for permanent storage. But for occasional overflow use, a well-chosen unit handles it fine within the manufacturer’s guidelines. Read the manual on storage-mode limits before you assume anything, and follow the load-and-hold rules the maker publishes. Ignoring those turns a legitimate secondary use into an insurance problem.

What He Would Do Differently

A year in, the collector had one regret and one thing he was glad he did. The regret: he wished he had spent the extra $400 on the low-profile ramp kit. Two of his cars have lowered suspension and factory air dams, and getting them onto the standard-height ramps requires a spotter and a slow careful approach every time. The low-profile kit would have eliminated that friction. He is retrofitting it this spring. That is a common first-year retrofit for enthusiast owners; if you know you have low cars, spec the option up front and save the retrofit labor.

The thing he was glad he did: adding the pad extensions. He had gone back and forth on those at purchase and decided to add them at the last minute. They turned out to be more useful than he expected — different cars in his collection have different lift-point spacing, and the extensions let him position the pads precisely on every car without shimming or improvising. Total time investment over the first year was probably five hours of scheduled maintenance across the whole calendar. That is nothing compared to the amount of time the lift saved him on brake jobs, oil changes, and general inspection work.

He did buy a small parts kit from us at purchase — spare deck slider blocks, a set of hydraulic filters, and a gallon of the correct ISO 32 fluid — so he would have wear parts on the shelf when he needed them. That kit ran under $200 and has already earned its keep. When a slider block showed early wear at the 8-month check, he had the replacement in a drawer instead of waiting for a shipment. A lift is not just about faster work — it is about being willing to do work that would otherwise get deferred or farmed out. Brake fluid flushes, complete brake system inspections, and thorough undercar checkups all happen more often when the barrier to doing them is a five-minute lift session instead of a jack-and-stand production. The car care improves as a result. That secondary benefit is hard to quantify at purchase and obvious in retrospect.
