First Year with a Scissor Lift for Automotive Restoration: An RV Shop Story

RV and trailer service shops along the Iowa-Illinois corridor rarely start with a scissor lift for automotive service on the shopping list, but by the end of a busy restoration project many end up wishing they had one. This first-year ownership story is composited from installs we have done for restoration and metal-work shops in that corridor over the past two years. The shop in this story bought an overhead-utility scissor to complement an existing 4-post, and we walk through the reasoning, the install, and the first twelve months of use. Background: an RV shop doing metal restoration

The shop in this story is a mid-sized RV and trailer service business that also takes on chassis restoration work: rust repair on frames, floor patch panels, and tank-support crossmembers. They already had a 4-post for RV alignment and long-wheelbase work, and a two-post for auto service. The gap in their toolkit was a lift for automotive restoration jobs that needed access to the underside of a vehicle without column interference, and where the vehicle would sit at working height for hours or days while metal panels were fabricated.

A scissor lift for automotive restoration work solved that gap. Because the scissor has no columns and no runway rails to interfere with a torch or a plasma cutter, the technician can reach any point on the underbody. And because scissors lock on mechanical cams, the shop was comfortable leaving a vehicle raised for extended fabrication sessions.

Overhead versus baseplate: the shop’s decision

The shop’s ceiling was 14 feet clear, which opened up both configurations. We walked them through the tradeoffs. An overhead-utility scissor lift for automotive service routes air, electrical, and lighting from above, keeping the floor around the lift completely clear. A baseplate scissor routes those utilities through a small channel at floor level, which is cheaper to install but adds a low ridge across the bay floor.

For restoration work specifically, the overhead configuration was the right answer. Grinding and welding produces sparks and slag, and a baseplate channel becomes a place for hot debris to collect. An overhead setup keeps the floor sweepable and reduces cleanup time between jobs. The equipment premium for overhead was modest, and the shop recovered it inside the first year in reduced cleanup labor.

Capacity and platform length for restoration rigs

Restoration work at this shop covered a wide range of vehicles, from Class C motorhome chassis (12,000 pounds) down to vintage trucks (4,500 pounds). We spec’d a 12,000-pound scissor lift for automotive service with a 78-inch platform to cover the heaviest jobs comfortably. That was heavier than they strictly needed for most work, but the extra capacity gave the platform stiffness they wanted for asymmetric metal-work loads.

Asymmetric loading is worth explaining. When a technician cuts out a rusted crossmember and replaces it, the vehicle’s weight distribution shifts as steel is removed and welded back in. A stiffer platform tolerates that shifting without deflecting, which keeps the rest of the underbody in alignment while the tech works. Buying capacity headroom on a restoration-focused scissor is not overkill; it is stiffness insurance.

Install day and utility routing

Install for an overhead scissor lift for automotive service takes longer than a baseplate install because of the ceiling work. Our crew took two days: day one for slab anchoring and lift assembly, day two for overhead utility routing (air lines, electrical, safety-shutoff sensor). The shop’s existing air compressor was plumbed into the new drop, and their existing 208V single-phase power was extended to a subpanel above the lift.

The safety-shutoff sensor is a small feature worth mentioning. It is a limit switch mounted at the ceiling that cuts lift power if the platform (or the vehicle on it) reaches a preset height. For a shop that occasionally lifts tall RV chassis, that shutoff prevents an accidental collision with overhead beams or ductwork. We recommend it on any overhead scissor install where ceiling headroom is even close to marginal.

First restoration project: rust repair on a vintage truck

The shop’s first big project on the new scissor was a 1972 pickup with a rotted frame section behind the rear axle. They lifted the truck to about 55 inches of platform height, engaged the safety cams, and left it raised for three days while the tech cut out the rusted section, fabricated a replacement, and welded it in. During that time the truck weight held steady on the cams, and the tech was able to work standing upright with a MIG welder without stooping.

The alternative on a 4-post would have been fine but slower, because the runway rails interfere with the frame rails during metal work. On a two-post, the swing arms would have needed to be repositioned every time the tech wanted to change work areas. On the scissor, no repositioning was needed at all. That workflow advantage justified the purchase inside the first project.

Second restoration: floor pan replacement on an old Suburban

The second major project was a floor-pan replacement on a 1988 Suburban. The tech needed access to the entire underside of the passenger compartment, plus room to slide 4×8 sheet metal underneath. He raised the vehicle to about 62 inches of platform height, which gave him standing headroom under the vehicle and enough clearance below the platform to slide sheet stock without kinking.

He noted that the scissor’s flat platform actually made this job easier than either a two-post or a 4-post would have. On a two-post, the arms would have blocked sheet-metal access. On a 4-post, the runways would have blocked underbody access at the wheel wells. The scissor lift for automotive restoration work threaded that needle perfectly, and the tech mentioned that he found himself pulling this lift for restoration jobs even when a two-post was open.

Year-one review and what the shop tells other buyers

Twelve months in, the shop’s summary was that the overhead scissor lift for automotive service earned its place in the bay and then some. Their annual inspection came back clean, the hydraulic fluid was still in spec, and the safety cams still engaged crisply. Their only regret was that they had not bought it two years earlier.
