For a restoration shop working across a wide vehicle range, the smart move is usually the standard platform length, because most restoration projects are pre-1990 vehicles that predate the extended-wheelbase era. Where the long platform makes sense is a shop that specializes in 1970s or 1980s luxury sedans, custom-body creations, or vintage commercial vehicles. Measure the longest wheelbase you plan to accept and add at least 20 inches of platform overhang for the tire pockets and the arm reach. That measurement drives the platform-length decision cleanly. Do it before you shop, not after you have narrowed down to two models on price.
Cylinder count and hydraulic architecture
A single-cylinder scissor lift has one hydraulic cylinder driving both scissor legs through a linkage. A dual-cylinder design has two cylinders, one per leg, hydraulically synchronized. On paper the dual-cylinder is more expensive and more complex. In practice, dual-cylinder scissors tend to lift more evenly under an off-center load, which is common in restoration work when the vehicle body is partially disassembled.
Commercial-duty scissors from Rotary and Challenger are dual-cylinder as a rule. Budget imports are more often single-cylinder. The maintenance implications: dual-cylinder means two seal kits at rebuild time, not one, so year-fifteen cylinder rebuild costs are higher on the dual system. But the operational advantage — smooth lift under uneven loads — is worth the delta for a restoration shop. If the shop is only ever doing symmetric-load work like tire rotations on stock vehicles, single-cylinder is fine. Lock spacing tighter than two inches is available on some premium models and lets the technician set the working height to a very specific spot — helpful for repetitive work at a chest-height position. Lock spacing wider than two and a half inches is a red flag. The other item to check is the lock release mechanism: air-assisted release is standard on commercial models, hand-lever release is on some budget imports. Air-assisted is faster and easier on the technician, and it also allows the lock to fully retract when the platform is coming down, which reduces wear on the ratchet teeth. Ask about lock cycle life on the spec sheet — commercial models rate for tens of thousands of cycles, budget imports may not publish the number. That silence tells you what you need to know.
Bridge jack integration and wheels-free access
A full-rise scissor holds the vehicle by the tires on the platform runways, which is fine for underbody access but not for wheels-off work like brakes, hubs, or bearings. The bridge jack raises the vehicle off the runway platform by four to six inches, unloading the wheels for service.
Not all scissor platforms accept the same bridge jacks. Rotary bridge jacks fit Rotary scissors on a specific rail width and pin spacing. Challenger bridge jacks fit Challenger scissors similarly. Cross-brand fitment is possible with adapter kits but rarely elegant. The technical spec to check is the runway rail width in inches at the platform underside, and the bridge jack capacity rating.
